Almost every machine with moving parts has wheels, yet no one knows exactly when the first wheel was invented or what it was used for. We do know, however, that they existed over 5,500 years ago in ancient Asia.

The oldest known transport wheel was discovered in 2002 in Slovenia. It is over 5,100 years old. Evidence suggests that wheels for transport didn’t become popular for a while, though. This could be because animals did a perfectly good job of carrying farming tools and humans around. But it could also be because of a difficult situation. While wheels need to roll on smooth surfaces, roads with smooth surfaces weren’t going to be constructed until there was plenty of demand for them. Eventually, road surfaces did become smoother, but this difficult situation appeared again a few centuries later. There had been no important changes in wheel and vehicle design before the arrival of modern road design.
In the mid-1700s, a Frenchman came up with a new design of road—a base layer of large stones covered with a thin layer of smaller stones. A Scotsman improved on this design in the 1820s and a strong, lasting road surface became a reality. At around the same time, metal hubs(the central part of a wheel) came into being, followed by the pneumatic tyre (充气轮胎) in 1846. Alloy wheels were invented in 1967, sixty years after the appearance of tarmacked roads (柏油路). As wheel design took off, vehicles got faster and faster.
25. What might explain why transport wheels didn’t become popular for some time?
A. Few knew how to use transport wheels.
B. Humans carried farming tools just as well.
C. Animals were a good means of transport.
D. The existence of transport wheels was not known.
26. What do we know about road design from the passage?
A. It was easier than wheel design.
B. It improved after big changes in vehicle design.
C. It was promoted by fast-moving vehicles.
D. It provided conditions for wheel design to develop.
27. How is the last paragraph mainly developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By following time order. D. By making classifications.
28. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The beginning of road design. B. The development of transport wheels.
C. The history of public transport. D. The invention of fast-moving vehicles.

The Chinese television reality show called “Wonderful Friends”, where entertainers hug whale sharks, kiss lions, feed pandas and dress up baby chimpanzees, has come under fire from wildlife protectors who want it to be stopped, saying such activities are cruel and are dangerous for both the humans and animals.
The show is the latest hit from Hunan TV, which has attracted more than 196,000 followers. In each show, popular stars are given zoo-keeping tasks that allow them to interact with wild animals in order to bring humans and animals closer together.
Animal welfare advocates(倡导者) say that is exactly what should be avoided. Dave Neale of Animals Asia (an advocacy group) said, “It is hugely misleading to the public about the needs and welfare of captive animals (圈养动物) and putting the animals’ welfare and health at risk.”
“What they don’t realize is that wild animals need space,” said Xie Yan, a zoologist and China director of the Wildlife Conservation Society. “Putting clothes on chimpanzees is not as adorable as you may think from the animals’ point of view. I guess their idea was to get their viewers to love and protect the animals,” Ms. Xie added, “but we do not agree with this approach for entertainment.”
Using famous people to focus public attention on wildlife is a common practice in conservation campaigns. The Chinese basketball legend Yao Ming went to Africa and highlighted the problem of elephant and rhinoceros poaching (偷猎) in the documentary “The End of the Wild”. “But differently, he, as a human observer, kept his distance and was there to see the hard truth of poaching, and that is different from a show created to attract viewers.” Ms Xie said.
Critics (评论家)also argue that the show violates (违反) Chinese wildlife protection laws.
29. Which one of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Many people like the show because of its dangerous activities.
B. Xie Yan is against persuading the public to love and protect animals.
C. The reality show makes no difference to wildlife at all.
D. Some think the show is against wildlife protection laws of China.
30. According to Ms Xie, “Wonderful Friends” is basically different from “The End of the Wild”, because ______.
A. they both invite different popular stars to show up
B. they shoot(拍摄) different numbers and kinds of species
C. their filming locations are different
D. their purposes and ways to approach animals are different

In order to increase their job chances after college, Chinese students are turning to a special practice—Eiffel Tower nose jobs(鼻整形手术).The latest trend in plastic surgery promises to create a nose that is similar to the curve of the Eiffel Tower.
Surgeon Wang Xuming said: “We are influenced by the beauty of the Eiffel Tower. We are not content to just add something to the nose; we reconstruct it.” The surgery costs about US$ 10,000 and involves the enlarging of the nose using tissue from the forehead.
Hundreds of posters advertising the procedure are put up all over Chongqing city, where surgeon Xuming runs his private practice. They show a Western-looking woman with an almost-too-perfect nose, against an outline of the Eiffel Tower.
Interestingly, many young women in China are eager to achieve a western appearance, as they believe it will give them an advantage in the highly competitive job market. “Some students face a lot of employment pressure after graduation. If their facial features are good, they’ll have more chances of finding a job,” said surgeon Xuming. “We’ve had students getting the Eiffel Tower nose; it’s helped them a lot.”
Apparently, Chinese employers are quite particular about appearances and prefer attractive candidates. Some of them even go as far as putting height and weight requirements in their employment ads. Plastic surgeons across the country are reporting an increase in the number of students choosing beauty “improvement”.

According to a Mr. Li, hospital manager at surgeon Xuming’s clinic, most of their customers are female and the bill is taken care of by the family. “They usually come in with their mothers, and tend to be from well-off backgrounds.” he said.
Personally, I don’t think it so important to “improve” our appearance as long as we are skilled at our jobs. We can’t decide how we look, but we can decide how well we live and work.
33. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?
A. The posters.
B. A nose job.
C. The Eiffel Tower.
D. A plastic surgery procedure.
34. It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that ___________.
A. employers are potential customers
B. attractive appearance seems to increase job chances
C. appearance is as important as height and weight
D. ads promote the plastic surgery
35. From what Mr. Li said we can learn that ____________.
A. most families can’t afford the surgeon
B. the number of plastic surgeons is increasing
C. patients can be well looked after at the clinic
D. their customers are usually from wealthy families

范文:
Dear classmates,
It’s a pleasure for me to have a chance to make a short speech today. Recently, I have found that some of our classmates study late into night and do not spare any time to take a rest during the day either, but they often can’t help falling asleep in class. And some classmates seldom have breakfast, which is also a bad habit and will surely do harm to their health.
In my opinion, it’s extremely important for us to have enough sleep and a proper diet. We must learn to make wise use of our time, and only in this way can we keep fit and study well. I wonder if you agree with me.
Thank you for listening!

Good morning, students! This is your principal,Mrs.Jenkins, wishing everyone a good day.I would like to make one student’s day extra special this sunny Friday morning .His name is Bobby Smith.Yeah,Bobby, this is for you!Bobby does great with his studies, and will probably graduate with honors, but that’s not why I’m celebrating him today. Two days ago,his science teacher,Ms.Green was having a bad day. Most of the students could tell something was up,but they didn’t know exactly what.Well, that morning,Ms.Green had learned that her uncle had passed away. She hadn’t seen him for years, but he had meant a lot to her when she was growing up.Realizing how sad she looked,Bobby had his mom,who runs a flower shop, deliver a bunch of flowers to Ms.Green on her lunch break.Ms.Green,who is now flying back to New York to be with her family, said she was so touched by what Bobby did that it allowed her to make it through the rest of the day. Thanks,Bobby! The lesson here is for us to be good each other.
