Her poetry often shows things that concerned her throughout her life, such as her search for a sense of home. Her troubled childhood and feelings of loneliness from this time affected her character and poetry.‎ Bishop's painful childhood is apparent(显面易见的) in some of her poems. Her father died when she was eight months old and her mother was mad when she was five. Bishop was raised firstly by her mother's parents and then by her father's parents. This experience left her confused about belonging. She had no home and this was shown in her poetry. In “A Prodigal”, when the character in the poem makes up his mind to go home, there is a sense of pessimism for Bishop who has no home. The lack of a sense of ‎ home has contributed to her depression(消沉) all her life.‎ Bishop attempts(企图) to make small, everyday experiences extraordinary in her poems such as “Filling Station”. In “Filling Station”, Bishop describes the beauty of a family filling station. Although it is “dirty” there is order in it. Simple family life is celebrated in it. She recognizes the value of home and beauty in everyday life, but she is only an observer of these. Distance remains between her and the family at the filling station.‎ Bishop's struggle to locate herself in the world is seen no more clearly than in “Sandpiper”. It deals with searching for something in a confusing world. She uses the metaphor(暗喻) of the bird which is “looking for something”. The “something” isn't specific(特殊的). It seems as if the bird doesn't know what he wants; the only certain thing is that he is searching.‎ Bishop's poems are personal on a more subtle (巧妙的)level, especially when her childhood, travels, etc, are taken into consideration. It is believed that Bishop is a complex(复杂的)poet who uses her poetry to find this feeling of belonging.‎ ‎29.What do we know about Elizabeth Bishop's childhood?‎ A.She was born poor. B.Her parents didn't love her.‎ C.Her grandparents treated her badly. D. She lived an unhappy life.‎ ‎30.When reading Bishop's poems, people can find her search for ________.‎ A.the true nature of human being B.a happy family life C.the feeling of belonging D. parental love ‎31.Which of Bishop's poems shows her love for simple family life?‎ A.Sandpiper. B.Filling Station. C. Manuelzinho. D.A Prodigal.‎ ‎32.Which of the following words can best describe Bishop?‎ A.Clever and strong. B. Gifted but pessimistic.‎ C.Unfortunate but kind. D.Creative and determined.‎ ‎ D A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops.‎ Students are increasingly using laptops for notetaking because of speed and legibility(清晰度).But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember ‎ and apply the concepts they have been taught.‎ Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes“mindlessly”by taking down word for word what the professors said.‎ In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual notetaking skills.Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts.‎ The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.‎ The researchers' report said,“While more notes are beneficial,if the notes are taken mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears. ”‎ In another experiment aimed at testing longterm memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes by hand performed significantly better on the exam.‎ These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.‎ ‎33.More and more students favor laptops for notetaking because they can ________.‎ A.get higher scores B.digest concepts better ‎ ‎ C. write more notes D.understand lecture better ‎34.While taking notes, laptop users tend to be ________.‎ A.mindless B.tireless C.thoughtful D. skillful ‎35.The author of the passage aims to ________.‎ A.examine the importance of longterm memory ‎ B.promote the use of laptops C.explain the process of taking notes ‎ D. stress the benefit of taking notes by hand 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ To be successful people Here are some opinions about successful and unsuccessful people.‎ ‎ Make life plans and set goals ‎ ‎ You can’t be successful without knowing where you are going. It’s said that 7,000 people lose their umbrellas in London every year. And all these umbrellas go to the Lost and Found Offices. However, hundreds of years ago, only rich and important people used umbrellas in ancient countries like India, China and Egypt. These rich people didn’t use umbrellas in the rain. They used them in the sun. Of course, poor people worked in the sun, but they didn’t have umbrellas. The Chinese invented the first umbrella for use in the rain. Starting in the 16th century the umbrella became popular to the western world. Umbrellas appeared in Britain about 400 years ago. At first, only women had umbrellas. Men didn’t like them. In 1750, a traveler named Jonas was the first man to use an umbrella on the street in England. The first umbrella shop was called “James Smith and Sons”. The shop was opened in 1830, and it is still located at 53 New Oxford Street in London now.‎
