This text is most probably taken from .‎ ‎ A. a research paper B. a newspaper report ‎ C. a class presentation D. an online advertisement ‎ ‎ B ‎ According to a recent report, about 15% of the people in the UK are members of gyms. But are they more likely to be fit?‎ ‎ A study found that gym members were 14 times more active than people who didn’t belong to any health club. Gym members did six hours more exercise a week, and this activity did make them fitter than non-gym members. They also spent less time sitting down every day than non-gym members. The results were the same for men and women.‎ ‎ The study included 405 people between the ages of 30 and 64, and the main characteristics of those who were gym members were the same as those who were not. “But gym members did more training than non-gym members,” said the lead author, Elizabeth Schroeder of the University of Illinois.‎ ‎ While it might seem clear that gym members exercise more and are healthier than non-members, Schroeder says this has not been directly shown before. However, the study is only designed to show a tie between gym membership and more exercise. It may be that active people like to join gyms. In the study, people who exercised as much as gym members were also in good health.‎ You can get the same benefits wherever you exercise. This study shows a gym membership can make you do more exercise, but other research shows that exercising outside has other help. Outdoor activity can make you feel happy about life----especially if you run through a forest.‎ Outdoor exercise is also more enjoyable than going to the gym. The first five minutes of outdoor exercise is especially helpful in making people feel good. But Schroeder says that a gym may also encourage greater exercise because it can be social and fun.‎ 25. What did the new study find out?‎ A. Gym members had healthier eating habits.‎ B. There were fewer women gym members than men.‎ C. Gym members did at least eight hours of exercise a week D. Gym members were more active than non-gym members.‎ 26. The underlined word “benefits” has the closest meaning to “ ”.‎ A. help B. need C. advice D. injury ‎ 27. Which of the following will Elizabeth Schroeder agree with?‎ A. Women should do more gym exercise.‎ B. We should be careful with outdoor training.‎ C. Outdoor exercise is better than gym exercise.‎ D. It is easier to keep exercising if you go to the gym.‎ ‎ C ‎ Reflecting(回忆)on the past about those decisions or actions that can’t be reversed(推翻)and being occupied with thoughts of “what if?” is no way to live. But there are a few things in life I’d probably do differently if I had the chance.‎ ‎ I once majored in architecture ----something I had been crazy about for as long as I could remember ---- and then I suddenly had a change of heart. I made an appointment with my adviser, and told him I was no longer certain I wanted to pursue a career in architecture.‎ ‎ “Don’t give up on your childhood dream!” “He’s right,” I thought. “I should just stick it out and I shouldn’t disappoint the little girl who once loved architecture.”‎ ‎ It was awful. I was agonized, holding on to a childhood dream that had long since faded. When I talked with a friend about it a year later, he asked: “Right now, what do you want to do with your life?” That’s when I came to the realization that dreams change over time and that you should give up the childhood dream if it’s not what you want as an adult. Luckily, it wasn’t too late. After some serious thought, I changed my major to journalism. It wasn’t something I had always imagined myself pursuing ---- but at that moment, it was what I wanted.‎ We grow up, and sometimes our dreams change --- and that’s perfectly OK. You just need to ask yourself every once in a while, “Is this still what I want?” If the answer is no, move on and start chasing a new one.‎ 25. What does the author suggest in Paragraph 1?‎ A. Past actions should be treasured.‎ B. It’s unwise to regret all the time.‎ C. Life would be dull with “What If?”.‎ D. We make better decisions by looking back.‎ 26. What does the underlined word “agonized” in Paragraph 4 mean?‎ A. Proud. B. Determined. C. Unregretful. D. Painful.‎ 27. Why didn’t the author change her major immediately?‎ A. Changing a major was uncommon.‎ B. Her adviser forced her not to do that.‎ C. She thought it a betrayal(背叛) of her younger self.‎ D. She didn’t want her childhood dream to fade.‎ 28. What lesson did the author learn from the experience?‎ A. Don’t follow others’ career advice.‎ B. It’s OK to switch to our real love.‎ C. Improve us before realizing our dream.‎ D. Childhood dreams are hard to insist on. ‎ ‎ D ‎ Olaf Stapledon wrote a book called First and Last Men, in which he looked millions of years ahead. He told of different men and of strange civilizations, broken up by long “dark ages” in between. In his view, what is called the present time is no more than a moment in human history and we are just the First Men. In 2,000 million years from now there will be the Eighteenth or Last Men.‎ ‎ However, most of our ideas about the future are really very short-sighted. Perhaps we can see some possibilities for the next fifty years. But the next hundred? The next thousand? The next million? That’s much more difficult.‎ ‎ When men and women lived by hunting 50,000 years ago, how could they even begin to picture modern life? Yet to men of 50,000 years from now, we may seem as primitive in our ideas as the Stone-Age hunters do to us. Perhaps they will spend their days gollocking to make new spundels, or struggling with their ballalators through the cribe.‎ ‎ These words, which I have just made up, have to stand for things and ideas that we simply can’t think of.‎ ‎ So why bother even to try imaging life far in the future? Here are two reasons. First, unless we remember how short our own lives are compared with the whole human history, we are likely to think our own interests are much more important than they really are. If we make the earth a poor place to live because we are careless or greedy or quarrelsome, our grandchildren will not bother to think of excuses for us.‎ ‎ Second, by trying to escape from present interests and imagine life far in the future, we may arrive at quite fresh ideas that we can use ourselves. For example, if we imagine that in the future men may give up farming, we can think of trying it now. So set you imagination free when you think about the future.‎ 25. A particular mention made of Stapledon’s book in the opening paragraph .‎ A. serves as a description of human history B. serves an introduction to the discussion C. shows a disagreement of views D. shows a popularity of the book 26. The text discusses men and women 50,000 years ago and 50,000 years from now in order to show that .‎ A. human history is extremely long B. life has changed a great deal C. it is useless to plan for the next 50 years D. it is difficult to tell what will happen in the future 27. Spundels and ballalators are used in the text to refer to .‎ A. tools used in farming B. ideas about modern life B. unknown things in the future D. hunting skills in the Stone Age 28. According to the writer of the text, imagining the future will .‎ A. serve the interests of the present and future generations B. enable us to better understand human history C. help us to improve farming D. make life worth living 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ The Rio Grande ‎ Although not the longest in America, the Rio Grande is one of the most important. But, unlike other significant rivers, it is not used for shipping. In fact, ocean-going ships cannot sail on its water. 36 Since 1846, it has been the official border of Texas and Mexico.‎ ‎ Rio Grande Geography ‎ The Rio Grande is either the fourth or fifth longest river system in North America. It all depends on how it is measured. 37 and these course movements can cause it to be longer or shorter. At its last official measure, the Rio Grande clocked in at 1896 miles. The river starts in Colorado and extends downward to the Gulf of Mexico. 38 ‎ ‎ Not only does the river extend south, but it also starts in the mountains and gets lower and lower in altitude as it extends to the Gulf.‎ ‎ The Rio Grande Today ‎ 39 Sadly, much of the water has been used up and parts of the river are most dry! This is because people take more water from the river than the river can get back from rain and other sources. Experts are working to correct this, though, with the hopes of restoring the river to its past strength.‎ Today, the river is important as a source of water for Texas and Mexicans. 40 Though borders like the Rio Grande separate nations, they are also shared spaces. The Rio Grande is therefore a symbol of friendship and peace between two peoples.‎ A. Usually, it is measured by length.‎ B. Downward is the best way of describing it too.‎ C. What makes the Rio Grande so important is its location.‎ D. Because the river twists so much, it occasionally changes course.‎ E. The Rio Grande today is mostly used as a source of drinking water.‎ F. More importantly, it is a symbol of cooperation between two nations. ‎ G. Today, the Rio Grande is the destination of tourists from all over the world. ‎ ‎ Everyone wants a blue ribbon(丝带).
