第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
I was reading these interesting stories behind a group of great logos in the world. Personally Nike is my favorite one – it’s so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald’s, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.
Nike
In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike’s logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $ 35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.
McDonald’s
The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the archshaped(拱形的) signs on the side of the company’s then walk-up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonald’s name was added to the logo in 1968.
Apple
There are different stories behind Apple’s logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn’t stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff’s “rainbow apple”, a rainbow-colored silhouette(轮廓)of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow-colored apple was replaced by the one-colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.
Mercedes Benz
The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three-pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach’s elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie and DMG in 1926.
Adidas
The Adidas logo, which was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that
can be achieved. The logo was used for the first time in 1967.
21.Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos?
A.Nike – McDonald’s – Apple – Mercedes Benz.
B.Mercedes Benz – McDonald’s – Nike – Apple.
C.Mercedes Benz – Apple – Nike –McDonald’s.
D.Nike –Mercedes Benz –McDonald’s – Apple
22.We can learn that Apple’s present logo is ______.
A.the religious story of Adam and Eve
B.the rainbow-colored bitten apple
C.Newton’s sitting under an apple tree
D.a bitten apple with only one color
23.What does Nike’s logo stand for?
A.The wing of the Greek goddess.
B.The source of inspiration for soldiers.
C.The statue of the Greek goddess.
D.The goddess of victory.

Little boys don’t like reading any more and even little girls don’t enjoy it as much as they once did: this is the accepted wisdom inside the book industry-and in many British families, too. Parents and booksellers tend to blame the growing appeal of online entertainment and handheld games, but research from the US is challenging these assumptions.
Michael Norris, an American publishing expert, will release findings in the monthly Book Publishing Report which show that, despite the best intentions, it is well-meaning mothers and fathers who often stop their sons and daughters from picking up the reading habit.
“Parents have too much of a role in deciding which books their child is going to read ,” said Norris. “It is turning children off.”
The results of a number of surveys Norris has carried out with hundreds of American booksellers over the past year have provided the basis for a series of tips for parents designed to help children find enjoyment in books.
One of his tips is to make sure children talk directly to a librarian or a bookseller, while parents stand well back. Parents should allow children to choose their own reading material. “Even if a mother or father is just standing with the child when the bookseller asks them what they like to read, we have found that the child will give an answer they think their parent wants to hear. It will not be the same answer they would give alone,” said Norris.
Norris’s another tip for parents is that they do not attempt to limit books to one age range. “What we have found is that parents should not worry whether a title looks too young or too old for a child. If a book has caught their attention, then let them take it.” Children, added Norris, often enjoy reading books that are easy for them to understand. “My father made me read The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy when I was much too young and I have never read another Clancy since,” said Norris.
24.What did Norris think prevents children from enjoying reading?
A.Children’s interest in handheld games.
B.The declining market of the book industry.
C.Parents’ influence on children’s book selection.
D.The growing popularity of online entertainment.
25.What do we learn about the new study?
A.It’s published to improve book sales.
B.It mainly focuses on British families.
C.It involves many years’ efforts.
D.It was conducted by Norris.
26.What should parents do to help kids get their favorite books at bookstores?
A.Introduce new books regularly.
B.Let them talk with booksellers alone.
C.Discuss popular books with children.
D.Often seek expert advice from book sellers.
27.What did Norris think of his father’s act?
A.It was totally wrong.
B.It was quite necessary.
C.It aroused his interest in reading.
D.It showed parents’ worries about kids.
C
It happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly (精彩地)written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.
And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t. In the World Book Day’s “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out), I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s really brilliant.
The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I haven’t read him, but haven’t lied about it either) and Herman Melville.
Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in–depth!
But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (I’ll come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).
28.How did the author find his friend a book liar?
A.By judging his manner of speaking.
B.By discussing the book itself.
C.By mentioning a famous name.
D.By looking into his background.
29.Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report?
A.Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list.
B.The author admitted having read 9 books.
C.42% of people pretended to have read 1984.
D.Dreams From My Father is hardly read.
30.By lying about reading, a person hopes to .
A.appear knowledgeable
B.control the conversation
C.learn about the book
D.make more friends
31.What is the author’s attitude to 58% of readers?
A.Favorable.
B.Uncaring
C.Friendly
D.Doubtful

More than 2,500 tiny glass jars-each containing brightly colored powders-line the walls of a museum at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The pigment(颜料) samples make up the Forbes Pigment Collection. Art experts rely on the collection for an important scientific purpose-the colors act as standards to help them conserve and authenticate artists’ paintings.
About a century ago, Edward Forbes, an art historian and art museum director at Harvard, noticed that the paint on some 14th-century paintings in his museum’s collection was deteriorating. To figure out how to save the paintings, he realized he would have to learn more about the materials used to make their paint.
Today, people can buy paint in every colour of the rainbow. But variety in paint colors-and the ability to purchase those paints at a store-wasn’t always possible. For centuries, artists collected and crushed(碾碎) everything from shells to rare stones to create the pigments that colored their artworks. They also used metal oxides(氧化物).
From 1910 to 1944, Forbes traveled the globe collecting powdered pigments. The samples helped arts conservators understand how paint behaves on a chemical level. Paint might react to changes in light, temperature, or humidity, depending on its pigments’ compositions. This can affect the colors of a painting over time or even cause paint to come off the painted surface.
Today, Narayan Khandekar, a senior conservation scientist at the Harvard Art Museums, is building on Forbes’s work by adding newer, chemically made pigments to the collection. The collection also plays an important role in helping to stop counterfeiters(伪造者). In 2007, experts compared pigments from the collection with those from a painting thought to belong to abstract artist Jackson Pollock. Chemical analysis showed that a red pigment in the painting was actually made 20 years after the
artist’s death, proving that the artwork was a fake.
32.Why does the museum house pigment samples?
A.To help artists in need.
B.To show the variety of paint colors.
C.To help art conservators study paintings.
D.To show the history of making pigments.
33.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “deteriorating” in Paragraph 2?
A.Dropping off. B. Breaking down.
C.Cleared away. D. Gathered together.
34.What can be inferred about Edward Forbes?
A.He was good at chemistry.
B.He collected many pigments.
C.He created pigments by himself.
D.He repaired a lot of old paintings.
35.What may be the best title for the text?
A.Colourful collection.
B.Looking for pigments.
C.Every pigment has its own story.
D.Edward Forbes and his collection.

In order to promote participation in outdoors exercise, our school organized an activity to climb Tianlong Mountain on April 10. The majority of my class joined the activity.
Early in the morning, having assembled outside the school gate, we head straight to the thickly-forested Tianlong Mountain. We set out for the top in high spirits the moment when we arrived at the foot of the mountain. In a course of the climb, we
cooperated with each other to pass the rocky or steep areas. Laughing and cheering, we eventually reached the summit, which we were greeted by the bright sunshine and fresh air. Viewing from the top, the city was beautiful. Bathing in the warm sunshine, we entertained us with stories, songs, dances and game.
This event was extremely beneficial and we strongly suggest that similar events are held every year!
