I can’t remember the first time one of my children told me, “I hate you.” I can, however, tell you that it still happens occasionally, but it doesn’t bother me. As their father, I often say things that are unpopular. If they hate me once in a while, I know I’m doing a good job.
There are three other words that I won’t allow in my house, however. Last week, I was watching my older son play with a paper airplane. After he accidentally threw it into a wall and it came apart, his eyes welled up with tears.
“I hate myself,” he said. It wasn’t the first time he’d said it, and I was concerned that he’d started
高二英语统练试题第16页(共8页)
to actually believe it.
I knelt down next to him and made him look into my eyes. I told him that I never wanted to hear
those words again, and that he needed to respect himself.
The difference between your kid telling you they hate you and them saying they hate themselves is that, five minutes later, they’ve already forgotten they “hate you”. Self-hate is much more potentially poisonous and for young people, it can linger into the rest of their life.
Kids who start to believe they hate themselves sometimes struggle to form new friendships. As teenagers, they avoid the chance to connect with a potential love interest, because they assume they’ll be rejected. And as adults, they might choose not to apply for the dream job because they assume it won’t work out.
I know this is true, because I didn’t have a high opinion of myself as a child. I found myself struggling in many areas, and I’d hate to see my children suffer the same fate.
Sometimes, words are just words. But some words can make the kind of impact I’d very much like to avoid for my children. I don’t fear strong language; I fear language that makes us weak.
21. How did the author feel on hearing his kids saying “I hate you”?
A. Depressed. B. Annoyed. C. Unconcerned. D. Excited.
22. Why won’t the author allow the three words “I hate myself”?
A. Because the impact of thinking in this way is negative.
B. Because it hurts parents to hear their kids saying so.
C. Because it doesn’t make any sense to blame oneself.
D. Because the impoliteness of saying so is unbearable.
23. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “linger” in paragraph 5?
A. come to an end B. continue to exist C. begin to change D. become out of date
B
Do you like making paper airplanes? If you like origami (折纸艺术), we’re sure you’d enjoy making paper airplanes, too. All it takes is some paper and a few simple supplies. And paper airplanes can be fun to fly around the house or outside in the yard.
No one knows for sure when the first paper airplane was created. Sometimes, historians give credit to Leonardo da Vinci. However, paper folding and kite making were both popular in Asia hundreds of years ago, so it’s likely the first paper airplanes may have been made long, long ago. In Japan, the art of folding paper is called origami. Some people call the art of making paperairplanesaerogami.
Since paper airplanes glide(滑行) through the air, they can teach scientists and engineers a lot about basic concepts of flight, engineering and aerodynamics(航空动力学). In fact, the national Aeronautics(航空学) and Space Administration(NASA) once sent a paper airplane into space on a space shuttle!
If you are wondering how a paper airplane would fly in outer space, you might be surprised by the answer. According to scientists, paper airplanes won't actually fly in outer space. Instead, paper airplanes would simply float in a straight line and could possibly float forever unless they hit another object!
The Wright Brothers also used paper airplanes to test out their theories about flight before making their first flight. They built a wind tunnel and used paper airplanes to gain a better understanding of how
高二英语统练试题第16页(共8页)
their aircraft would operate in the wind.
So just how far can a paper airplane fly? On February 28, 2012, former college quarterback Joe Ayoob set the world record for the longest paper airplane flight. He threw a paper airplane the entire length of a warehouse, setting the record at 226 feet, 10 inches. That broke the old record by 19 feet, 6 inches!
24. What is the second paragraph mainly to tell us?
A. Something about Leonardo da Vinci. B. The kinds of paper airplanes in Asia.
C. The history of paper folding. D. How to make paper airplanes.
25. Why did scientists send a paper airplane into space?
A. To help the astronauts. B. To observe how it would fly.
C. To perform a special task. D. To explain how it float in outer space.
26. What does the author think of making paper airplanes?
A. It is one of the most important discoveries. B. It is a difficult activity for children.
C. It shows that the Japanese are clever.D. It has its value to aeronautical science.

Mrs. Smith trembled with excitement when she was told her fortunes. “Somebody is coming home to you,” Mrs. Gray said slowly. “He’s carrying a rifle on his back and he’s almost there.”
Mrs. Smith felt as if she could hardly breathe. “And there he is!” Mrs. Gray cried, pointing to the road. They all rushed to the door to look.
A man in a blue coat, with a gun on his back, was walking down the road toward the Smith farm. His face was hidden by a large pack on his back.
Laughing and crying, Mrs. Smith grabbed her hat and her children and ran out of Mrs. Gray’s house. She hurried down the road after him, calling his name and pulling her children along with her. But the soldier was too far away for her voice to reach him.
When she got back to their farm, she saw the man standing by the fence. He was looking at the little house and the field of yellow wheat. The sun was almost touching the hills in the west. The cowbells rang softly as the animals moved toward the barn (畜棚).
“How peaceful it all is,” Private (列兵) Smith thought. “How far away from the battles, the hospitals, the wounded and the dead.My little farm in Wisconsin. How could I have left it for those years of killing and suffering?”
Trembling and weak with emotion, Mrs. Smith hurried up to her husband. Her feet made no sound on the grass, but he turned suddenly to face her. For the rest of his life, he would never forget her face at that moment.
“Emma!” he cried.
The children stood back watching their mother kissing this strange man. He saw them, and kneeling down, he pulled from his pack three huge red apples. In a moment, all three children were in their father’s arms. Together, the family entered the little unpainted farmhouse.
Later that evening, after supper, Smith and his wife went outside. The moon was bright, above the eastern hills. Sweet, peaceful stars filled the sky as the night birds sang softly, and tiny insects buzzed in the soft air.

How to Become Smart
There are three things that will get you ahead in life: good looks, smarts and being considered as being smart. The first is God-given. And unluckily most of us are not good-looking.31
Go to college, and get an education.32 It means that you will have been exposed to many different ideas and hopefully you will have learned how to think. Being able to think outside the box and for yourself are features smart people possess.
Read books and educational magazines. 33 Educational magazines such as Discovery or National Geographic are a wealth of knowledge that you can share with others, thus making you sound very smart. If you do watch television, try watching something where you can learn such as the History Channel, Discovery etc.
Expand your vocabulary. Try to learn one new word a week. It does not seem like much, but adding 52 new words to your vocabulary will really make you appear much smarter. Subscribing to vocabulary.com is a good start.34 This way you are actually getting 365 words a year, but that is usually more than most people can absorb.
35 Uneducated people and people not considered as being smart tend to do this. They hear an outrageous(骇人的) claim and they repeat it to the nearest ear. You can do much harm to your quest for being smart if you are known for giving bad information.
A. You will have a new word sent to your e-mail address daily.
B. The programs actually provide you with information you can use.
C. That is my exact point.
高二英语统练试题第16页(共8页)
D. In this article we explore some different ways to become smarter.

Before Laurie had her accident, everyone had said that she was the one to beat.
高二英语统练试题第16页(共8页)
She thought back to that car accident where her right knee was badly injured. She spent six total months on recovery, treatment and practice because she hoped to regain her skill.
“Hello, Laurie,” one of her friends burst in. “ How’s the knee? Is it going to slow you down?”
“I guess we’ll find out tonight.” Laurie said.
“There’s a girl named Jinny, strong in everything. She’s the only real competitor you have to beat.” the friend said and hurried out.
Hearing that, Laurie decided to show her most difficult jump. “If I don’t try it, I won’t stand a chance,” she thought. “Does anyone believe that I can still win?”
Suddenly her right knee sent pain up and down her leg. The doctor said it would do that for a while. “What makes you think you have a chance tonight? ”she said to herself.
After the pain passed, she moved slowly to warm up. Then she said firmly, “I must win! ”
At that moment, a young woman hurried in with a skate equipment bag. She put some of her belongings onto a chair. Her bag fell to the floor. “Hi, I’mJinny Jordan, ”she said.
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. “So this is my competitor,” thought Laurie, “Because of her, I may lose tonight.”
“I’m Laurie Collins, ”Laurie told Jinny. “Something fell out of your bag, Jinny.”
As Jinny began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
“Jinny,” someone called, “your tape of music is missing. You are the next one! Laurie, after Jinny. ”

One possible version:
“Music is so important to the skating,”Laurie said thoughtfully, doing some preparation alone in the dressing room. Suddenly, she saw something under a chair. She bent over to pick it up.“Jinny’sgreen box! ”she exclaimed. “It must have rolled out of her bag. ” Laurie stood motionlessly, “If Jinny doesn't have her music. She will lose. She is my only real competitor. ”Laurie shivered slightly as she thought about this. Then she wondered. “Do I really want to win so much? ”Laurie hesitated for a second. Then she hurried out to give Jinny her music tape. Jinny was grateful to Laurie, and finished the skating successfully.
Minutes later, Laurie glided to the center of the stadium when her name was called.Nervous as she was, she tried to skate in time with her music. Then she did her most difficult Jump.“Good,”she thought to herself, “my right knee’s holding up.”As the music ended, applause filled the stadium. When the marks appeared, Laurie knew she achieved her goal. As she walked back to the dressing room, Laurie thought about Jinny’s music tape. “No one will know how close I really came to losing, ”Laurie said softly to herself.
