The year 1814 was deeply troubling for most Americans. The country was in war. Two years previously, a group of congressmen (议员) had persuaded President James Madison to declare war on Great Britain for frequently attacking American sailors from our merchant ships. American armies fell into terrible defeats along

the Canadian border and British troops were ready to invade New York. The small shy president didn’t seem able to hold the country together.
But his wife, Dolley, already famous as a Washington hostess, showed a spirit of the nation that won many people’s admiration. Already many people were calling her the First Lady—she was the first to be called that name.
When a British fleet (战舰) landed troops in Maryland to attack Washington, D.C., Dolley refused to leave. “I’m determined not to go until I heard Mr. Madison is safe,” she said.
In the face of frightening disaster, Dolley stood her ground. A messenger covered with dust arrived from the battlefield, telling her to flee. Once more, Dolley refused. Finally, a close friend, Major Charles Carroll, persuaded her to depart. As they left, Dolley realized the White House’s splendid portrait of George Washington would fall into the enemy’s hands. She refused to take another step until the servants gave it to two men who promised to
care for it. Seeing the original copy of the Declaration of Independence in a display case, she insisted on taking it with her.
The British arrived a few hours later and burned the White House and many other government buildings. Americans wondered if the government would fall down. This defeatist mood changed when reporters began writing about the courage Dolley Madison had displayed in the White House. Referring to Dolley’s deeds, a Baltimore weekly paper declared: “The spirit of the nation is aroused!” A few days later, the citizens and soldiers of Baltimore fiercely resisted a night-long attack and forced the British fleet to withdraw. That battle was followed by a series of victories, which persuaded the British to abandon the war.
When the troops paraded through Washington, D.C., First Lady Madison was there standing beside her husband, accepting their cheers.

It is normal to feel a little sleepy after eating lunch. Some people believe that there is a significant shift in blood flow from the brain to the stomach. Although this sounds plausible, it doesn’t really make much sense. If this were the case, why wouldn’t we feel sleepy after having a large breakfast or after dinner?
People may argue that there are some elements that cause sleepiness within food. They think there are some foods that may make you feel a little sleepy. In addition, they believe drinking alcohol may also cause sleepiness. In most cases, this is not what contributes to sleepiness after lunch, however.
In fact, it has more to do with the natural timing of an increasing tendency towards sleep. There are two phenomena that contribute to this: the sleep drive and the circadian(生理节奏的) rhythm.
The sleep drive is due to the gradual build-up of a chemical within the brain called adenosine. The longer a person stays awake, the more adenosine accumulates, leading to an increasing desire for sleep. This reaches its peak right before bedtime, but it is also higher in the afternoon compared to the morning.
The second process that contributes indirectly to sleepiness is the circadian rhythm. It is actually the pattern of an alert(警惕的) signal. It increases throughout the day to keep us awake and act against the increasing levels of adenosine. There is a dip( 下降 ) in this pattern in the early afternoon, typically 7--9 hours after waking up. When the alerting signal dips, the potential sleepiness shows itself, and we feel sleepy.
第 11 页 共 12 页
To deal with the sleepiness that occurs in the early afternoon, you can use caffeine or even take a short nap. Fortunately, if you tough it out, this period will pass and you will find that you feel more alert again in a matter of hours.
28. What does the underlined word“plausible”probably mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Consistent B. Significant C. Reasonable D. Attractive
29. What do we know about adenosine from the passage?
A. It is what makes us feel sleepy.
B. It reached its highest point at noon.
C. It is a feeling of our physical condition. D. It controls the speed of circadian rhythm.
30. What’s the relationship between the circadian rhythm and adenosine?
A. They cooperate with each other.
B. Th two have no direct relationship. C. The two perform the same function.
D. The former helps lower the level of the latter.
31. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. Problem—reason—suggestion. B. Argument—data—measure.
C. Assumption—proof—conclusion
D. Introduction—experiment—approach

Leaves change color with the seasons, going from green to golden as the weather gets cooler. But do you know that the eyes of reindeer (驯鹿) also go through a similar transformation?
Glen Jeffery of University College London and his team found that the eyes of reindeer living in the places with periods of 24 hours’ darkness change color. During lighter and warmer months their eyes are golden and during colder and completely dark months their eyes are deep blue.
Just like lots of other mammals reindeer’s retinas (视网膜) reflect back a lot of light during brighter months, which makes their eyes look golden. But, unlike other mammals, when there is less light in winter Nature gives reindeer a unique kind of life-saving ability that makes their eyes turn blue.
Because there is almost no light in the places with periods of 24-hour darkness, a small layer of tissue behind the retina—known as the tapetum lucidum (明毯) —turns less reflective so their eyes can absorb as much light as possible.
“By changing the color of the tapetum lucidum in the eye, reindeer have ability to deal better with the extreme
第 11 页 共 12 页
differences between light levels in their habitat between seasons,” Jeffery explained.
If you’ve ever tried to take a picture of an animal with a flash at night and found two glowing yellow eyes staring at you, that’s because the powerful light is bouncing off by its tapetum lucidum, creating a very powerful reflection.
Reindeer’s pupils (瞳孔) become very large for months on end and over time this blocks the tiny blood vessels that drain fluid ( 液体) out of their eyes. Pressure rises up in the retina, which causes the change from golden to blue.
If you look closely in a mirror in a very bright room you will see that your pupils are very small, and if you put your hand around your eye to block out some of the surrounding light you will see your pupils get a little bigger. Our pupils change sizes hundreds of times a day but reindeer who live in dark winters have enlarged pupils for months.
“This gives them an advantage when it comes to finding predators ( 捕食者) , which could save their lives,”
said Jeffery.
32. When reindeer’s eyes turn blue, they .
A. take in much less light in winter
B. had trouble adapting to the darkness C. reflect back less light in the darkness D. see something in the distance clearly
33. Reindeer’s eyes turn blue because of .
A. the disappearance of fluid from their eyes B. the length of the blood vessels in their eyes C. the pressure of their pupils on blood vessels
D. the change of temperatures in different seasons
34. In winter, reindeer’s pupils .
A. are constantly large for months
B. can change their sizes many times a day C. become smaller in order to find enemies D. are getting a little bigger once a month
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Reindeer’s eyes become bigger in winter. B. Reindeer adapt to darkness very quickly. C. Reindeer change their color with seasons.
D. The color of reindeer’s eyes change with seasons.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两个为多余 选项。
No two people can have the same thinking, likes, and interests. 36 So, is arguing the road towards the end? Or does it make a friendship stronger?
37 It is not only the similarities among friends that keep them together, but the differences that keep the friends alive. If they agree on all the things at all the times, the friendship would definitely get boring. There would be no room for newness and excitement. Arguments are helpful in letting off some anger and clearing up misunderstanding before they get severe hurt. So, when friends discuss an issue, it helps them ease out conflicts that may build up and lead to fights.
When friends disagree over a certain thing or habit, the verbal disagreement is only a proof that they are comfortable enough to express their thoughts and differences without any fear. When you let a person voice his/her opinion, you respect that person. 38 Voicing your concerns or things that hurt you, is always better than keeping them in mind, which may eventually boil down to anger.
Overall, arguments in a friendship narrow the chances of bigger fights. Healthy arguments involve a fair listening of each other and trying to come to a solution. When friends learn to listen to, accept and absorb the disagreements of one another, there is room for more understanding and love. 39 Try to talk softly. Avoid screaming or talking loudly. Let the argument be a(n) exchange of views and not bad words.
Arguing, if done in the right spirit, is definitely healthy for friendship. 40 . A. The differences cause argument.
B. All that counts is how you deal with it.
C. However, do not attack your friends when you argue.
D. Arguments are required once in a while in a friendship.
E. You save a huge amount of boiling anger that could lead to a fight ahead.
F. This is a very important value in any friendship, without respect, there can be no love.
G. Positive arguments helps the friend come to a solution and compromise, which brings trust and feelings of safety.
