My senior year of high school was a very hectic one, to say the least. If I wasn’t studying or worrying about my grades, I was working on after-class activities. It seemed as if my life had turned into one crazy cloud of confusion and I hoped to find some sort of direction.
Finally, I got a part-time job at the local coffee shop. I had thought it would be easy and, for the most part, stress-free. I pictured myself pouring coffee and becoming close friends with my customers.
What I hadn’t expected were the people with so many orders. There were moments when I was very angry simply because I couldn’t seem to please anyone. There was always too much sugar, too little ice, or not enough skim milk. However, I kept at it.
One day, one of my customers came in, depressed. Before he left, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He looked at me questioningly because he hadn’t ordered anything but the coffee. He opened the bag and saw his favorite doughnut (甜甜圈) I had given him. He smiled and thanked me before heading out into the rain.
The next evening, he came. Instead of ordering something, he handed me a single pink rose and a note.
“Thanks for being so sweet and thoughtful yesterday. It is so nice to meet someone who’s warm and unselfish. Please don’t change your ways because I truly believe that you will do better. Have a great day!”
As time went on, I did come across some customers really particular. But anytime I felt depressed, I thought of that man and his kindness. Then I would smile, hold my head up high, clear my throat and ask politely, “How can I help you?”

An Italian company has created the world’s first underwater farm. The station named Nemo’s Garden consists of five biospheres (生物圈) fixed to the bottom of the sea off the coast of Savona, Italy. They’re being used to grow strawberries, beans, garlic, and lettuce.
“The main target of this project is to create other sources of plant production in areas where environmental conditions make it difficult to grow crops through traditional farming, including lack of fresh water, fertile soil, and extreme temperature changes,’’ said project spokesperson Luca Gamberini.
The five biospheres, currently floating between depths of 18 and 36 feet, are constantly watched by Ocean Reef Group --- a diving equipment company --- from a control center on dry land. According to various news reports, the plants are watered by drips of water on the inner walls of the biospheres. With a constant temperature of 79 degrees day and night, and humidity (湿度) at around 83 percent, the conditions are ideal for plants to grow well. The high amount of carbon dioxide also encourages growth.
Ocean Reef president Sergio Gamberini said he came up with the idea of growing plants underwater during a summer vacation in Italy. In his own words, he wanted to do something that’s different and to show the beauty of the ocean. After two years of failed attempts, they finally were able to get these five biospheres working. Their success may lay the foundation for a new form of crop production that can be done without harming the environment.
In fact, the biosphere seems to be attracting wildlife. Octopuses (章鱼) and endangered seahorses are taking shelter under the structure, while crabs (螃蟹) are climbing up the anchors and into the greenhouses. None of the creatures have damaged the plants so far. “It’s so kind of science-fiction to see these two different forms of life interact,” Gamberini said.
28. Why was the underwater farm created?
A. To help explore the sea. B. To find a new way of growing crops.
C. To improve the sea environment D. To protect sea creatures.

31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The undersea exploration.
B. The world’s first underwater farm.
C. A biosphere that attracts wildlife.
D. Growing plants without soil.

When you’re out with a friend and take a photo of yourselves, do you know that you are also creating a work of art? Or that you are competing with Vincent van Gogh himself? Probably not. Your idea might be to show off your selfie (自拍) on WeChat or QQ, but you probably don’t think of the Internet as a gallery or of yourself as an artist.
But the manager of London’s Saatchi Gallery, Nigel Hurst, thinks that the casual pictures we take of ourselves do have something in common with self-portraits by the great masters. In support of the idea, the Saatchi Gallery has a new exhibition called From Selfie to Self-Expression, which is running now until May 30.
It features well-known self-portraits from artists including those drawn by Dutch painters Van Gogh and Rembrandt. It also has selfies on show, which include one taken by US celebrity Kim Kardashian and another of former US President Barack Obama with former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, according to the BBC. The gallery is even encouraging visitors to add their own selfies to the show.
Hurst is perhaps not being 100 percent serious. He isn’t claiming that a snap you take of yourself in your favorite restaurant can be compared with a self-image painted by Van Gogh. But he does make a serious point. Once upon a time, it was only artists who could make images of themselves. They were the only ones, as Hurst told The Guardian, who had the skills, materials and tools to create self-portraits. “Today, however, we all have that ability through our smartphones.”
And Hurst described the smartphone selfie as an example of “a transform in society using technology as a means of self-expression”. He told The Guardian: “The selfie generation is becoming the self-expression generation as each of us seeks to explore and share our inner creativity through the one artistic tool to which we all have access, the smartphone.”
32. Why does the Saatchi Gallery launch a new exhibition called From Selfie to Self Expression?
A. To prove that self-taken pictures resemble the great masters’ self-portraits.
B. To support that self-taken pictures differ from the great masters’ self-portraits.
C. To show that self-taken pictures outweigh the great masters’ self-portraits in style.
D. To suggest that self-taken pictures have something to do with the great masters’ self-portraits.
33. What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?
A. Smartphone users are more competent than artists before.
B. The smartphone has gained a powerful self-photographing ability.
C. Smartphone users use the smartphone functions to create self-images.
D. The smartphone has the skills, materials and tools to make self-images.
34. How does Hurst feel about the smartphone selfie?
A. Supportive. B. Neutral. C. Critical. D. Concerned.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The virtues of the smartphone selfie
B. Age of selfie artists around the corner
C. Selfies in comparison with self-portraits
D. The appearance of the smartphone selfie

Changing People’s Bad Impression on Us
Some of us have made bad first impressions in front of people we wanted to become good friends with. First impressions are important because they form the foundation on which all future thoughts about someone will be based. 36 However, there are actions you can take to change people’s bad impression of you.
●Apologize immediately. A sincere apology can go a long way because you will prove to everyone their thoughts about you. Tell the people that you didn’t intend to offend them and that you wish to correct the situation. Explain the reasons why you acted the way you did in your apology. 37 Otherwise, it will make others feel uncomfortable that you keep bringing up the past.
●Use humor. When you are around the people you made a bad impression in front of, play a small joke on yourself. Once they know you are not afraid to laugh at yourself, it can break up some of the tension. Remember to only direct humor at yourself. 38
●Do not make assumptions. After you have made a bad impression, it can be easy to assume that everyone thinks the worst of you. 39 Instead of assuming what someone thinks about you, explain to him that you feel ashamed about how you acted and ask him how your behavior affected him.
● 40 In order to overcome a bad first impression, your words and actions in the time to come must be consistently good. With enough time and patience, gaining trust and changing wrong beliefs is possible.
A. That way you can avoid any more feelings of discomfort.
B. First impressions are usually long-lasting.
C. Be careful not to overdo it.
D. Be mindful of your surroundings and sensitive in what you say to others.
E. Pay attention to future behavior.
F. However, things aren’t always as bad as they seem.
G. So it’s hard to erase a bad first impression from someone’s mind.

第二节 书面表达 (满分25分)
Dear Peter,
How is everything going recently? I’m writing to invite you to go back to our senior high school to celebrate her 100th anniversary. It has been 10 years since we graduated from it. Do you still remember the days we spent studying and playing together? Till now, these memories remain fresh.
As I know, the celebration will last for 3 days from Oct 1st to Oct 3rd. Schoolmates will gather to meet their old friends. An evening party will be held to feast people’s eyes. When we meet, I
suppose money should be raised to set up a scholarship which is used to provide financial support for the students from rural areas. What do you think about it?
I am looking forward to your early coming!
Yours,
Li Hua
