“I’ve always loved food,” says Cassie Dawson in the kitchen of her flat in London. “But I’ve become bored with eating out. I’ve had too many disappointing meals and paid too much money for them! At one point, fed up with my complaint, a friend suggested I open my own restaurant. Impossible, I thought. But then I heard about supper clubs...”
Supper clubs are a mixture of a restaurant and a dinner party — you go to a stranger’s house and
he/she cooks dinner for you. Like a restaurant, you pay for your food, but like a dinner party, you eat at the same table as other people. They are advertised through social-networking sites with a menu and little information about where the supper club is until just before the meal.
“It’s like running a secret restaurant for one night,” says Cassie. “The next morning, I set the tables and chairs aside. I put the TV back and it’s my living room again.”
Cassie opens her “restaurant” for people about once a month, and she really enjoys the evenings she’s had so far. She uses fresh, local ingredients and a typical meal costs about the same as a takeaway — much less than a restaurant meal. So how does she make money out of it?
“I don’t,” says Cassie. “In fact, at first I was worried about losing money on my club. I’m good at cooking but my maths is terrible! But I was surprised by how cheaply I could make a good meal. This isn’t about money. It’s about a different eating experience.”
And what about inviting complete strangers into her house? Was Cassie ever nervous about that?
“Not at all,” she says. “Almost everyone at the supper club is just interested in having a good meal with other interesting people.”
24. Why did Cassie decide to open her own restaurant finally?
A. To cook cheap and good meals for others. B. To earn a living.
C. To make friends with strangers. D. To satisfy her friend’s needs.
25. What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Dinner parties. B. Fresh ingredients.
C. Invitations to dinner. D. Supper clubs.
26. We can know that Cassie’s restaurant ________.
A. is only open to her friends B. serves meals for free
C. only serves takeaways D. is only open in the evening
27. How does Cassie feel about her restaurant now?
A. Worried. B.Content.
C. Annoyed. D. Sensitive.

Trained dogs might just be the proof that they really are men’s best friends not only because they can fill laundry baskets, but because they can now use washing machines with just a simple bark.
Thanks to the new washing machine —--- the ‘‘Woof to Wash”,a lot of people can benefit from the invention, which enables trained dogs to unlock the machine with a footpad and start it with a simple bark. A doggy footpad and a microphone system have been added, which can recognize a dog’s bark, which means that dogs are able to unlock the machine by pressing the pad with their paw, pull a rope with their mouth to open the machine, and close the machine again with their nose, before starting the washer by barking.
Dr. John Middleton is a great inventor. The disabled owners who are blind or have autism (孤独症)problems or learning difficulties, can’t use the present-day washing machines. So he thought there’s a lot of demand for the new washing machines to make things easier. Then he saw a video from the charity Support Dogs, where a dog makes the bed and loads the washing machine. He was completely blown away by the video at that moment. He was inspired that he could invent a machine which the dog could operate. Mr. Middleton said, “I’m happy I saw the video. A normal washing machine can be very challenging, so the single program machine is very helpful. But a lot of people also have speech problems, so a voice-activated machine is handy. ’’
The Support Dogs charity was set up in 1992. Dogs are trained here using voice commands and hand signals, so that they can help their owners fetch post, turn on light switches, open doors, assist in dressing and undressing, as well as do a complete laundry cycle. It has trained over 200 dogs to date throughout the country and relies fully on volunteer donations.
We hope the new washing machine can help more people. And we sincerely welcome the sponsorship of any type of business which is kindly willing to help. If you would like to sponsor, please contact us!
28. What do we know about the “Woof to Wash” machine?
A. It enables smart dogs to have a bath by themselves.
B. It enables trained dogs to do the washing with a bark.
C. It enables untrained dogs to become popular pets at home.
D. It enables dogs to be trained in the Support Dogs at home.
29. Who would benefit a lot from the new invention?
A. Disabled dog owners. B. Dog trainers.
C. Famous inventors. D. The Support Dogs charity.
30. What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?
A. Mr. Middleton once got hurt by the dog in the video.
B. Mr. Middleton wanted to have a similar dog in the video.
C. Mr. Middleton was deeply impressed by the video.
D. Mr. Middleton wanted to make the same video.
31 What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To help protect animals. B. To prove dogs useful.
C. To collect suggestions. D. To attract sponsorship.
D
Biologists believe that love is fundamentally a biological rather than a cultural construct, because the capacity for love is found in all human cultures and similar behavior is found in some other animals. In humans the purpose of all the desire is to focus attention on the raising of offspring. Children demand an unusual amount of parenting, and two parents are better than one. Love is a signal that both partners are committed, and makes it more likely that this commitment will continue as long as necessary for children to reach independence. But what does science have to say about the notion of love at first sight?
In recent years the ability to watch the brain in action has offered a wealth of insight into the mechanics of love. Researchers have shown that when a person falls in love, a dozen different part of brain work together to release chemicals that trigger feelings of euphoria, bonding and excitement. It has also been shown that the unconditional love between a mother and a child is associated with activity in different regions of the brain from those associated with pair-bonding love.
Passionate love is rooted in the reward circuitry of the brain—the same area that is active when humans feel a rush from cocaine. In fact, the desire, motivations and withdrawals involved in love have a great deal in common with addiction. Its most intense forms tend to be associated with the early stages of a relationship, which then give way to a calmer attachment form of love one feels with a long term partner.
What all this means is that one special person can become chemically rewarding to the brain of another. Love at first sight, then, is only possible if the mechanism for generating long-term attachment can be triggered quickly. There are signs that it can be. One line of evidence is that people are able to decide within a second how attractive they find another person. This decision appears to be related to facial attractiveness, although men may favor women with waist-to-hip ratio of 0.7, no matter what their overall weight is. (This ratio may indicate a woman’s reproductive health.)
Another piece of evidence comes from work by a psychologist at Ben-Gurion University, who found in a survey that a small percentage (11%) of people in long-term relationships said that they began with love at first sight. In other words, in some couples the initial favorable impressions of attractiveness triggered love which sustained a lengthy bond. It is also clear that some couples need to form their bonds over a longer period, and popular culture tells many tales of friends who become lovers.
One might also assume that if a person is looking for a partner with traits that cannot be quantified instantly, such as compassion, intellect or a good sense of humor, then it would be hard to form a relationship on the basis of love at first sight. Those more concerned with visual appearances, though, might find this easier. So it appears that love at first sight exists, but is not a very common basis for long-term relationships.
32.When a person falls in love, _____________.
A. he feels as if he were addicted to cocaine.
B. he will be committed to the beloved as long as necessary.
C. he will experience complex feelings brought on by different regions of his brain.
D. he will experience a calmer attachment form of love before he feels the extreme love.
33.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. pair-bonding love comes from a long stable friendship.
B. the mechanism for creating long-term attachment ensures love at first sight
C. it is impossible for those ordinary-looking people to fall in love at first sight.
D. men may be attracted by a girl whose figure suggests her admirable reproductive capacity.
34.The underlined word “traits” in the last paragraph probably means ______.
A. characteristics
B. something typical in your temper
C. particular quantities in your personality
D. attitudes that show your moral standards
35.Which of the following may be the best title of the passage?
A. The stages of passionate love
B. The science of love at first sight
C. The biological construct of pair-bonding
D. The mechanism for generating long-term love

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Recently, I’ve been following a simple rule that is helping me crush procrastination(拖延症) and making it easier for me to stick to good habits at the same time. 36 There are two parts to the 2-Minute Rule.
Part 1—If it takes less than two minutes, then do it now.
37 For example, washing your dishes immediately after your meal, tossing the laundry in the washing machine, taking out the garbage, sending that email, and so on.
If a task takes less than two minutes to complete, then follow the rule and do it right now.
Part 2—When you start a new habit,it should take less than two minutes to do.
Can all of your goals be accomplished in less than two minutes? Obviously not. But,every goal can be started in 2 minutes or less. 38
It might sound like this strategy is too basic for grand life goals, but I beg to differ. The 2-Minute Rule works for big goals as well as small goals because of the inertia(惯性)of life.39 I love the 2-Minute Rule because it embraces the idea that all sorts of good things happen once you get started.
The most important part of any new habit is getting started—not just the first time, but each time. It’s not about performance,it’s about consistently taking action.
I can’t guarantee whether or not the 2-Minute Rule will work for you. 40 Anyone can spare the next 120 seconds.Use this time to get one thing done.Go.
A.It’s surprising how many things we put off that we could get done in two minutes or less.
B. The goal is to make it easier for you to get started on the things you should be doing.
C.Here’s what you need to know to stop procrastinating.
D. And that’s the purpose behind this little rule.
E. Once you start doing something,it’s easier to continue doing it.
F. However,I can guarantee that it will never work if you never try it.
G. I call this little strategy the “2-Minute Rule”.
