Itching to travel, but still in high school? Looking for ways to get to the top of that pile of admission essays at your dream university? Explore your options through student exchange programs.
Ready to dive in? Here are 3 stellar student exchange programs for college-bound teens.
1.High school exchange in Sydney, Australia with Campus Education Australia
Pack a brown bag with Vegemite sangers because you're heading to Oz! Why not study in the land down under with Campus Education Australia(CEA)? This continent remains a popular destination for college-bound teens who want the exchange student experience without the hassle(麻烦) of learning a foreign language. When classes get too much, go walkabout on the weekends in the outback, in the cities, or along the coastline. Programs run all year round and last as short as nine weeks to as long as 12 months. Bonus: with CEA, you can choose your host family and the high school you want to go to!

Go to high school in France with AFS Intercultural Programs but think beyond Paris. France has so many places to explore: sprawling cities, small towns, and picturesque villages, from the Alps to the Mediterranean. Stay with a host family to pin down the je ne sais quoi that makes French people tick. For year-long and semester programs, students need to have at least one year of French.
3.Performing Arts Abroad Program to study musical theater in England
Work those jazz hands by signing up for a high school musical theater training program in London with Performing Arts Abroad. Take acting, singing, auditioning, dance, and stage combat classes in some of the West End's most famous studios. Facebook has turned out to be one of the most visited and most popular social media sites in the
world. When it comes to talking about Facebook, we cannot stop ourselves from describing its creator, Mark Zuckerberg. His success story and Facebook have inspired many people all over the world in different ways.
Mark Zuckerberg was born into a well-educated family and developed an interest in computer programming at an early age. His first computer was a Quantex 486DX, powered by the Intel 486 processor. When Mark was 12 years old, his father introduced him to Atari BASIC Programming. At such a young age, Mark managed to use the program to come up with his own messenger called the ZuckNet. Thanks to his first creation, all the computers in his house were connected to the ones in his father's dental office. Within that connected system, the computer users were allowed to send messages to each other.
Mark Zuckerberg created his billion-dollar social networking site based on a simple concept. He was trying to compare photos of two different people and he invited other people to vote and decide which one was better looking. At Harvard University, with his three classmates, he had come up with the Facebook's predecessor, Facemash. Mark Zuckerberg finally started to write the code for a new website later known as Facebook in 2004. This new site was equipped with new ideas and more useful features, including a section where users can share their comments. Facebook managed to become popular with many more users at many universities around the country. It only took less than a few months for Mark Zuckerberg to spread his networking site to countless numbers of schools and universities in the United States and Canada.
Six years later, TIME magazine made him Person of the Year for his social networking site. In 2018, Forbes included Mark in the list of the 400 richest people in the world.

Time flies, but the tracks of time remain in books and museums. This is what made a recent tragedy in Brazil even more terrible.
On Sept.2, a big fire ripped(撕裂) through the National Museum of Brazil. “Two hundred years of work, research and knowledge were lost,” Brazilian President Michel Temer wrote on Twitter after the fire. “It's a sad day for all Brazilians.”
Most of the 20 million pieces of history are believed to have been destroyed. Only as little as 10 percent of the collection may have survived, Time reported. Among all the items, there were Egyptian mummies, the bones of uniquely Brazilian creatures such as the long-necked dinosaur Maxakalisaurus, and an 11,500-year-old skull called Luzia, which was considered one of South America's oldest human fossils.
Besides these, Brazil's indigenous(本土的) knowledge also suffered. The museum housed world-famous collections of indigenous objects, as well as many audio recordings of local languages from all over Brazil. Some of these recordings, now lost, were of languages that are no longer spoken.
“The tragedy this Sunday is a sort of national suicide, a crime against our past and future generations,” Bernard Mello Franco, one of Brazil's best-known columnists, wrote on the O Globo newspaper site.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, as BBC News reported on Sept. 3. After the fire burned out, crowds protested outside the museum to show their anger at the loss of the irreplaceable items of historical value.
According to Emilio Bruna, an ecologist at the University of Florida, museums are living, breathing stores of who we are and where we've come from, and the world around us.
Just as underwater grass floats on the surface if it loses its roots, a nation is lost without its memories. The fire at the National Museum of Brazil teaches the world an important lesson: We should never neglect history.
(C)28.What can be summarized as the main idea of the 3rd and 4th paragraphs?
A. Long history of South America. B. Remains from the fire.
C. History and knowledge burned up. D. Mysteries to be solved.
Most of the 20 million pieces of history are believed to have been destroyed.和第四段第一句Besides these, Brazil's indigenous(本土的) knowledge also suffered.
(B)29.What opinion may be shared by Bernard Mello Franco and the protesters?
A. The government is to blame for the tragedy.
B. The loss can't be made up for.
C. The museum should be rebuilt.
D. The criminal should be sentenced to death.
(A)30.What does Emilio Bruna compare museums to?
A. Living stores of our past. B. Underwater grass.
C. The oldest fossils. D. National suicide.
(C)31.What may be the best title of the passage?
A. Death of a civilization B. Functions of museums
C. Gone with the fire D. Brazilians' memories
D
In December 2016 Edgar M.Welch drove six hours from his home to Washington D.C., where he opened fire in a pizzeria with a gun. He had previously read an online news story about the restaurant being the headquarters of a group of child abusers run by Hillary Clinton. He decided to investigate for himself; fortunately, no one was hurt.
The story about Hillary Clinton is one of the most famous examples of the growing phenomenon called ‘fake news’. It was quickly denounced by publications such as The New York Times. However, many people thought that these papers were themselves lying for political ends and instead of disappearing, the fake story snowballed. Tweets from ‘Representative Steven Smith of the 15th District of Georgia' claimed that the mainstream media were telling falsehoods. Even though both this name and district were invented, the message was re-tweeted many times. A YouTube accusation of The New York Times article got 250,000 hits.
Fake news stories can be hard to control for several reasons. Many people mistrust established news sources and others just don't read them, so the debunking(揭穿) of a fake story by a serious newspaper has limited effect. In addition, the Internet is very hard to police. When users are caught misusing one media platform, they simply go to another one or start up a website themselves.
There are also various reasons why people create fake news. Some have political motives, to belittle or attack their opponents. Other websites, like The Onion, deliberately publish fake news as satire-humorous comment on society and current affairs. Another group is in it for the profit: many people clicking on entertaining fake news stories can bring in a lot of advertising revenue. One man running fake news sites from Los Angeles said he was making up to US$30,000 a month in this way. There are also those, like the small-town teenagers in Macedonia who wrote fake news stories about Donald Trump, who seem to be motivated partly by money and partly by boredom.
(D)32.Why did Edgar M.Welch go to the pizzeria?
A. He was trying to commit robbery.
B. He hated all supporters of Hillary Clinton.
C. He was investigating a crime as a private detective.
D. He was concerned about an online news story.
He had previously read an online news story about the restaurant being the headquarters of a group of child abusers run by Hillary Clinton.
(A)33.Which of the following best explains “denounced” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A. Condemned. B. Abused.
C. Followed. D. Proved.
(D)34.Which is most unlikely to be a reason for creating fake news?
A. Entertaining others as well as themselves.
B. Commenting on current affairs.
C. Attacking your political opponents.
D. Making money from people who pay to read the stories.
Another group is in it for the profit: many people clicking on entertaining fake news stories can bring in a lot of advertising revenue.
(B)35.How does the author feel about stopping fake news spreading?
A. Cautiously optimistic. B. Doubtful.
C. Positive. D. Indifferent.
Fake news stories can be hard to control for several reasons.
An artificial reef(礁) is a man-made underwater structure created as a habitat for marine life to assist in promoting the productivity of the ecosystem. There are a wide variety of materials, such as steel or concrete, which can be used as artificial reefs. These materials are stable and environmentally safe. 36.__D__ Once the structure is in place, a live-bottom reef community can form because it provides a hard substrate for marine life.
The term“artificial reef”may be misleading because there is actually nothing artificial about the marine ecosystem around the man-made structure. When the artificial reef is properly designed, placed and constructed, it can be just as productive as natural hard-bottom reef habitat. 37.__F__When we calculate the lifespan of these artificial reef environments, they can remain functional from anywhere for many years.
Artificial reef sites range from small areas to some that can be a square mile in size. 38.__E__It is largely dependent on support from tourists, researchers and fishermen, who object to the use of parts of the ocean floor where interesting plants or animal life exist. 39.__C__
40.__A__In particular, the reefs are useful in aquaculture(水产业) because they are built in very specific places, allowing fish farmers to direct where the schools of fish live and monitor their development easily. In addition, artificial reefs also ensure the presence of organic bio-filters, which are important in helping to clean up fish farms. Finally, the reefs are beneficial because they allow large structures to be recycled, saving on valuable landfill space. Old equipment can now serve a whole new purpose at the bottom of the ocean.
A. The production of artificial reefs has provided people with several important benefits.
B. Currently, artificial reef programs have been refused by many researchers and fishermen.
C. As a result, the reefs tend to be located on flat sand bottoms.
D. They include deliberately-sunken full-sized ships, tires, cars, aircraft, and military tanks.
E. The choice of the position for a reef program can be a complex process.
F. In this case, many creatures choose to live in these locations.
G. Therefore, those dangerous elements can be removed.
所以选A。

Fun stories happening to you during your stay in China, especially something culturally different from yours, are welcome. If possible, you can talk about Chinese economy or education from your perspective. Please send your work (either in Chinese or in English) to editingcentre@163.com by Nov.15, 2018. Please email me anytime you have anything unclear.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

M: Have you read the story “The Gift of the Magi” written by American writer, O.Henry?
W: Yes. I enjoy reading his short stories. What I admire about him most is that he started to write stories while he was in prison. Who is your favorite writer, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway or Jack London?
M: Jack London. He was born into a poor family in San Francisco in 1876. In 1897, he went to the Klondike in Canada. He liked to put his adventures into his most famous stories and novels. London continued to travel until a few years before his death in 1916. Now I'm reading his story Love of Life. I'm sure you will like his works.
W: Great! Can you lend it to me after you finish it?
M: No problem.

M: Hello, Karen. You look upset. What's wrong? Is everything all right?

W: I broke it the other day doing the housework.
M: Oh, that's terrible.
W: Yes, it's been bothering me since that day.
M: Are you afraid of having surgery.
W: Yes, I've never had surgery before.
M: I wouldn't worry. I had to have surgery on my leg last year. Everything went fine.
W: Were you nervous before the surgery?
M: A little. Who's your doctor?
W: Dr. Allen.
M: Oh, I've heard he's really good. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

W: Where on earth is it, John? I hope we are going the right way.
M: Emm... Judging by the traffic, I think we are near the heart of the downtown area.
W: Oh no. We should be heading for the village. Did I make a wrong turn?
M: I'm not sure, but I guess that you turned right when you should have turned left.
W: Well, now the problem is how to get back onto the main highway. It's too bad that we will be late for the party.
M: Don't worry. There is still enough time. Why don't we stop and ask someone?
W: OK. Let's stop along the next block. I think I see a policeman up there in front of the bank.
M: OK.
Text 10
Good communication is important for parents and children of all ages. You might disagree with your parents over something simple, like coming home late. But other disagreements might be more complicated. The following are a few tips to help bridge the generation gap.
First, the easiest to say but the hardest to do is to honour your parents. Focus on good memories you have of you parents. Remember something they said or they did that you appreciated or something they did that impressed you. Approach your parents about an issue with these memories in mind. Also, negotiate rather than argue. This tip can help any relationship. Don't approach your parents when you are angry. If you don't think you can speak to them calmly, try writing a letter. Trying to reach a compromise is also advisable. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on an issue. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect for them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong. Lastly, tell your parents what you care about, and why. A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It will be worth the effort.
