Tu Youyou, the 86yearold Chinese female scientist，received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in Stockholm on October 5, 2015. Tu is the first Chinese Nobel winner in Medicine for her discoveries concerning a novel treatment against Malaria.
Based on a fourthcentury traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) text, together with
her team, she discovered artemisinin(青蒿素)from sweet wormwood through trial and error, the key drug that has reduced death rates of malaria. Tu delivered a speech titled “Artemisinin is a gift from TCM to the world”. She has demanded more research into the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine and called for joint efforts worldwide to develop more uses for TCM, which she called “a great treasure with thousands of years' history ”. She said that by combining TCM with modern scientific technologies, “more potential can be discovered in searching for new drugs”．
According to the WHO, more than 240 million people in Africa have benefited from artemisinin, and more than 1.5 million lives have been saved since 2000 thanks to the drug. Apart from its contribution to the global fight against malaria, TCM played a vital role in the deadly outbreak of SARS across China in 2003.
Besides treating viruses, TCM has been most effective in treating difficult multisource illnesses, and using nonmedicinal methods such as acupuncture (针灸疗法) and breathing exercises.
However, TCM is seldom understood or accepted by the West. “Tu's success will bring more recognition and respect for TCM，” experts say. The Western world should learn to appreciate the value of the treasures of TCM, which will lead to more basic scientific research into ancient TCM texts and ways to explore research findings worldwide.

This year, Facebook, the social media website, announced that it would cooperate with several news organizations—including The New York Times and the BBC—to place news stories directly into users' personal Facebook web pages.The deal shows how important social media has become to news organizations, and is a clear sign of how the world of news is changing.
Many thought of it as the death of the newspaper, when Google News began in 2002. It had no human editor. Instead, Google used, and still uses, a computer programme that selects news stories according to the readers' personal interests. More recently, the Associated Press and Yahoo have been publishing computerwritten articles. Both use special software to automatically produce stories about company financial results and sports reports—areas where the quality of writing is felt to be of secondary importance to the accuracy of the data.
I think we should be concerned about such developments. One concern is that Facebook, Google and other social media websites see journalism as a sideline(副业), a way of putting people in front of advertisements. It isn't their main function—so if it stops making them lots of money, they're likely to stop doing it.
There's another concern that computerwritten articles are not actual journalism at all, because what a human news team produces is actually quite complex. A wellwritten news story offers a voice to each side of an argument and brings the public new knowledge.
Although economics and the speed of delivery mean readers will probably choose a computerwritten story over a carefully shaped article—at least for daily news—I don't think the computers will be writing any indepth articles for a while yet.

Hey, April’s almost here! Time for Bike Month at Davis High! Skip the bus and ride your bike to school instead! It’s healthier and much more fun when you ride with your schoolmates! Many of our staff members already ride their bikes to work regularly, so you’ll probably see them on the road to school. Mr. Eng in the science department is a frequent bike traveler. He lives ten miles from the school but always makes it here to teach the early math class at 7:30. He also competes in bike races on the weekend. Ms. Krupp’s pink bike is always locked up at the front of the school by the time Principal Dave arrives. During this Bike Month, maybe some of you will be inspired to use your bikes more often. We’ll have competitions with prizes in late April. Who bikes the farthest? Who bikes the most? There will be organized bike parties on Friday evenings, too. We ride together on the city streets.
