Working up a credit score for Walter Cavanagh has got to be a mathematical nightmare — the man has nearly 1,500 valid credit cards to his name and holds the Guinness Record for the most credit cards. Mr. Plastic Fantastic — a title given to him by Guinness World Records — is also the proud owner of the world's longest wallet,
which can hold about 800 cards. But he uses it only to carry a few cards, while the rest are safely kept in bank safedeposit boxes.
Cavanagh started collecting credit cards in the late 1960s. “One of my best friends and I made a silly bet: the guy who could collect the most credit cards by the end of the year would win dinner,” he said. “I got 143 cards by the end of the year, and my friend gathered 138.” After winning that bet, Cavanagh decided to simply keep going with his unusual collection. He got credit cards from gas stations, airlines, bars, and even ice cream stores.
If there's one card missing from Cavanagh's collection, it's that from the Newberry Company. They repulsed his application for a card in the early 1970s, even though he'd collected over 100 by then. They said he had too much credit. Therefore, so far he hasn't had a Newberry card in his collection.
Cavanagh hasn't stopped applying for new cards — he's held the Guinness Record since 1971 and has no intention of letting go of it. He copies whole pages from a U.S. directory of businesses and keeps sending applications. If he receives a rejection, he writes back to the company explaining his goal and ambition. But he doesn't count useless cards in his total collection.
Thanks to all the cards to his name, Cavanagh has access to about $1.7 million at any moment. Despite this privilege, he has managed to maintain an excellent credit score.
The 72yearold retired financial planner and credit expert has only one piece of advice to share: “Never use a card to buy anything you can't pay off in a couple of months. If you don't have the discipline,_you shouldn’t't have the cards.”
24.Cavanagh began to collect credit cards when he ________.
A.owned a very long wallet
B.made a bet with his friend
C.wanted to create a Guinness Record
D.was treated to dinner by his friend
25.What does the underlined word “repulsed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Rejected. B.Recalled.
C.Repeated. D.Recognized.
26.What do the underlined words “the discipline” in the last paragraph probably refer to?
A.Having many cards to your own name.
B.Buying things by card and paying off in time.
C.Managing to own more privileges for your card.
D.Using a card to buy things as many times as possible.
27.What do we know about Cavanagh's cards?
A.Some of them are useless.
B.They are safely kept in his long wallet.
C.They have brought him fame and privilege.
D.Fewer new cards are added to his collections.

Interviewing is one of those skills that you can only get better at. You will never again feel so ill at ease as when you try it for the first time, you'll probably never feel entirely comfortable trying to get from another person answers that he or she maybe too shy to reveal. But at least half of the skill is mechanical. The rest is instinct(本能,直觉), which can all be learned with experience.
The basic tools for an interview are paper and two or three well-sharpened pencils. But keep your notebook or paper out of sight until you need it. There's nothing less likely to relax a person than the arrival of someone with a note-taking pad(便签纸).Both of you need time to get to know each other. Take a while just to chat, judging what sort of person you're dealing with, getting him or her to trust you.
Never go into an interview without doing whatever homework you can. If you are interviewing a town official, know his voting record. If it's an actor, know what plays he has been in. You will not be liked if you inquire about facts that you could have learned in advance.
Many beginning interviewers are afraid that they are forcing the other person to answer questions and have no right to inquire about his personal secrets. The fear is almost 100 percent unnecessary. Unless the person really hates being interviewed, he is delighted that somebody wants to interview him.
Most men and women lead lives that are uninteresting, and they grasp any chance to talk to an outsider who seems eager to listen.
This doesn't certainly mean that it will go well. In general you will be talking to people who have never been interviewed before, and they will get used to the process awkwardly(笨拙地), perhaps not giving you anything that you can use. Come back another day; it will go better. You will both even begin to enjoy it—proof that you aren't forcing your victim to do something he doesn't really want to.
28. The word "reveal" could best be replaced by________.
A.ask B.question C.give D.look
29. According to the passage, during an interview notebooks or paper should________.
A.never be used B.be used only when necessary
C.be kept at home D.be given to the interviewer
30. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that most men and women ________.
A.are afraid to meet interviewers B.hate being interviewed
C.like being interviewed D.fear to speak to outsiders
31.According to the passage, if a person being interviewed is too uneasy to give you anything
useful, what should you do?
A.Arrange another interview. B.Give him or her a bad score.
C.Wait until he or she calms down. D.Try to make him or her trust you

Standing on one leg is a simple way to assess someone's risk of suffering a stroke (中风), suggests a new study.
Researchers have found struggling to balance on one leg for 20 seconds or longer is linked to an increased risk of small blood vessel (血管) damage in the brain and reduced thinking ability in otherwise healthy people with no symptoms.
“Our study found the ability to balance on one leg is an important test for brain health. Individuals showing poor balance on one leg should receive increased attention, as this may indicate an increased risk of brain diseases and cognitive (认知的) decline,” said Dr Tabara, associate professor at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan.
The study, published in the journal Stroke, consisted of 841 women and 546 men, with an average age of 67. To measure oneleg standing time, they stood with their eyes open and raised one leg. The maximum time for keeping the leg raised was 60 seconds. The participants performed the examination twice and the better of the two times was used in the study analysis.
The researchers found that the inability to balance on one leg for longer than 20 seconds was associated with brain diseases without symptoms. Overall, those with brain diseases were older and had high blood pressure than those who did not have such diseases.
Short onelegged standing time was also linked with lower cognitive score. Although previous studies have examined the connection between physical abilities and the risk of stroke, this is among the first studies to closely examine how long a person can stand on one leg as an indication of their overall brain health.
Dr Tabara and his team also found a strong link between struggling to stand on one leg and increased age.
32.Dr Tabara suggested that one who couldn't stand on one leg for more than 20 seconds________.
A.try to improve his physical abilities
B.receive medical treatment for brain diseases
C.be given special attention to prevent accidents
D.be examined for other symptoms of brain diseases
33.Which of the following factors might decrease oneleg standing time according to the text?
a.Heart diseases. b.Cognitive decline.
c.High blood pressure. d.The aging process. e.Brain
diseases.
A.a, b, d B.a, c, d
C.b, c, e D.b, d, e
34.What can we learn about the study from the fourth paragraph?
A.It was led by Dr Tabara.
B.It included more than 1,300 people.
C.It examined people of different age groups.
D.It required the participants to close their eyes first.
35.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.Overall Brain Health Deserves Close Attention
B.Brain Diseases Without Symptoms Require Attention
C.Can't Stand on One Leg? You May Be at Risk of Stroke
D.Can't Keep Your Balance? You May Have Brain Damage

M: How long can I keep the book?
W: For one month. Please make sure you return the book before it’s due.
Text 2
M: Hurry up, Jenny! It’s already 7. We’ll be late for the film!
W: Don’t worry, dear. We still have 20 minutes, and it takes us only 15 minutes to get there. We’ll be there just in time.
Text 3
M: I heard on the radio that it’ll be sunny during the holiday weekend. Maybe we can take a trip to Boston.
W: That sounds great! I’ll call Jane to see if she’d like to join us.
Text 4
W: It’s nearly 8. If you want to catch the 9 o’clock train, you’d better go now.
M: Don’t worry. I’ll drive to the station.
W: In that case, let me go with you, and you drop me off at the city center. I’ll go to the open market.
Text 5
W: I’m sorry the cake is late. We’ll do better next time, I promise.
M: Well, I’m sorry, too. You’ll have to take it back. The birthday party is over, and we don’t need the cake anymore.

M: Oh? What will I do then?
W: Would you like to choose a different color? We do have this camera in black and orange.
M: My wife doesn’t like either of those colors.
W: If you want, we can order another camera just like this one. There wouldn’t be any extra charge for it.
M: That sounds fine. Would you please go ahead and do that?
W: We’d be very happy to. But it’ll take at least a week, maybe ten days. We’ll call you when it comes in.
M: Thank you very much.

W: Two days. I have a get-together party with my college friends on the 10th in Toronto. Oh, I’m afraid I’ve got to go now. My husband is waiting for me, and we’ll have to pick up Daniel from school. Have a nice holiday, Joe.
M: Thank you. You, too!
Text 10
W: Where can you look if you want to know how tall the tallest person in the world is? Or who the oldest person in the world is? There’s only one place where you’ll find all this information, and that’s in the Guinness Book of Records. This morning, we have someone from the Guinness Company that produced that famous book, Thomas Manning. Welcome to the program, Thomas!
M: Thanks, Sue. It’s a pleasure to be here.
W: Perhaps you could start by telling us where the idea for the book came from.
M: Well, it was first suggested in the early 1950s. Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of Guinness, was out shooting birds with some friends. A bird flew away so quickly that no one was able to shoot it. Sir Hugh wondered whether this bird was the fastest bird in Europe. And if it wasn’t the fastest, he wondered what was.
W: So, I suppose he went to the nearest library to look for the information, and he couldn't find it?
M: Yes, that’s exactly what happened. And this made Sir Hugh think there must be other people in the same situation who wanted this kind of information. He thought that, like himself, people would be interested in finding facts about records to satisfy their curiosity.
W: So, the idea for a book of records was born! And when did the first book come out?
M: A few years later, in 1955. So, to answer your first question, the tallest person in the world is 231.7 centimeters tall, and the oldest person is Jeanne L. Calment, who was born in February 1875.
W: There are also some rather strange records, aren’t there, Thomas?
M: Yes, that’s right. Did you know, Sue, that the shortest time it has taken…
