With exams just around the corner, now is a good time to explore some of UCL’s lesser-known
study spaces and get down to some revision. Here are some good choices for you.
UCL Senate House Hub
UCL Senate House Hub opened in 2015 and provides 144 study spaces. What’s more, you can check how many spaces are available online before you head to the hub! Located on the third floor of the South Block of Senate House, the center has room for individual and group study in traditional library spaces, as well as casual arm chairs and bar-style desks.
UCL Eastman Dental Library
The newly refurbished UCL Eastman Dental Library is located halfway along Gray’s Inn Road and is open from Monday to Friday, 9:00 am–8:00 pm. The library has 72 study spaces, and many IT facilities are available. The library also has a study room for meetings and a computer room with an interactive whiteboard.
UCL Language & Speech Science Library
UCL Language & Speech Science Library (LaSS) has disabled access and has recently been refurbished to add extra study spaces. With only 49 spaces, LaSS is smaller than most other UCL Libraries and tends to fill up relatively quickly, so get there early to avoid disappointment.
Senate House Library
This one may be cheating as the Senate House Library is not technically a UCL library. However, all UCL students and staff can register for free membership online. With millions of books and journals, Senate House Library offers some places a little less used by UCL students but perfect for getting down to some hard work.
21. The four places are mainly introduced to someone who __________.
A. loves reading B. is preparing for exams
C. likes learning online D. prefers to study in libraries
22. What should students do online before they go to UCL Senate House Hub?
A. Make an appointment in advance.
B. Check the library’s opening hours.
C. Check whether there are available seats.
D. Check whether there are available armchairs.
23. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. UCL Senate House Hub has the longest history.
B. Senate House Library is not used by UCL students.
C. The disabled have no access to all the four libraries.
D. LaSS may be the smallest one among the four libraries.

Andy rode slowly on his way to school, day-dreaming about the fishing trip that his father had promised him. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he was unaware of everything else around him.
He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the heavens. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and the buzzing mass seemed to be heading angrily towards him.
With no time to waste, Andy sped off in the opposite direction, riding furiously—but without knowing how to escape the swarm. With a rapidly beating heart and his legs pumping furiously, he sped down the rough road. As the bees came closer, his panic increased. Andy knew that he was sensitive to bee stings(蜇). The last sting had landed him in hospital—and that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to stay in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his father’s words came to him. “When you are in a tight situation, don’t panic. Use your brain and think your way out of it. ”
On a nearby hill, he could see smoke waving slowly skywards from the chimney of the Nelson family home. “Bees don’t like smoke, ” he thought. “They couldn’t get into the house. ” Andy raced towards the Nelson house, but the bees were gaining ground. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He estimated that the bees would catch up with him soon.
Suddenly, out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted a small dam used by Mr. Nelson to irrigate his vegetable garden. Off his bike and into the cool water he dived, disappearing below the surface and away from the savage insects. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. Dragging himself out of the dam, he struggled up the hilly slope and rang the doorbell. Mrs. Nelson took him inside and rang his mother.
“You’ll really need that fishing break to help you recover, ” laughed his mother with relief. “Thank goodness you didn’t panic!” But Andy did not hear her. He was dreaming once again of the fish he would catch tomorrow.
24. Why did Andy fail to notice the swarm of bees earlier?
A. He was riding to school. B. He was listening to a strange sound.
C. He was going fishing with his father. D. He was lost in the thought of the fishing trip.
25. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the swarm of bees in the passage?
A. They crowded like a black cloud. B. They shocked and terrified Andy.
C. They tried to attack Andy in a mass. D. They made Andy stay in hospital for two days.
26. How did Andy avoid the bees in the end?
A. He rode off in the opposite direction. B. He asked Mr. Nelson for help.
C. He hid himself under the water. D. He rushed into the Nelson house.
27. Which of the following can best describe Andy’s escape from the bees?
A. No pains, no gains. B. In time of danger, one’s mind works fast.
C. Once bitten, twice shy. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C
New Zealand fishermen caught what may prove to be a world-record-breaking colossal squid (巨大的鱿鱼).
In the cold, dark waters of the Antarctic hides a creature with eight arms, two super long tentacles (触须) and eyes as big as dinner plates. Sound like something out of a science fiction movie? Think again.
On February 21, New Zealand fishermen landed a colossal squid the length of a school bus. They had been fishing with long lines for Chilean sea bass (黑鲈) in the waters off the coast of New Zealand when they caught the rare squid. With two hours of hard work, the crew skillfully pulled the creature into a net and dragged it aboard their ship.
Scientists estimate (估计) that the animal weighs about a half ton and is about 40 feet long. That would make this colossal squid the biggest on record.
First identified in 1925 after two tentacles were found in a whale’s stomach, the colossal squid has long been a mystery. The animals are not easy to observe because they can go down to ocean depths of 6,500 feet. What scientists do know from studying the bodies of a half dozen colossal squids is that they are fierce hunters.
The recently captured colossal squid has been frozen to keep it for scientific study. It will be transported to New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa, in the capital city of Wellington. Experts believe it to be the first adult male ever caught undamaged. Scientists hope to learn more about the
colossal squid’s diet, behavior and reproductive (繁殖) patterns.
“Scientists will be very interested in this amazing creature,” said New Zealand Fisheries Minister Jim Anderton. “It adds immeasurably to our understanding of the marine environment.”
28、Why is it usually difficult for experts to observe the squid?
A. Because it moves too fast. B. Because it is too large.
C. Because it is very dangerous. D. Because it can go down to deep ocean.
29、What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The squid is from a science fiction story.
B. The fishermen often meet colossal squids.
C. Scientists know much about the colossal squid.
D. The fishermen had some difficulty catching the large squid.
30、Which of the following is TRUE about the possible record-breaking colossal squid?
A. It lives in the cold, dark waters of the Arctic.
B. Its tentacles were found in a whale’s stomach.
C. It is a fierce hunter according to the scientific study.
D. It is believed to be the first adult male ever caught.
31、What would be the best title for the passage?
A. the biggest squid ever found B. scientific research on squid
C. the lifestyle of the colossal squid D. how the fishermen caught the squid
D
The findings confirm results of existing studies that generally agree on a potential beneficial link between chocolate consumption and heart health. However, the authors stress that further studies are needed to test whether chocolate actually causes this reduction or if it can be explained by some other unmeasured factor.
The World Health Organization predicts that by 2030, nearly 23. 6 million people will die from heart disease. However, lifestyle and diet are key factors in preventing heart disease, says the paper. A number of recent studies have shown that eating chocolate has a positive influence on human health due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This includes reducing blood pressure and improving insulin sensitivity.
However, the evidence about how eating chocolate affects your heart still remains unclear. So,
Dr Oscar Franco and colleagues from the University of Cambridge carried out a large scale review of the existing evidence to evaluate the effects of eating chocolate on cardiovascular(心血管) events like heart attack and stroke.
They analyzed the results of seven studies, involving over 100,000 participants with and without existing heart disease. For each study, they compared the group with the highest chocolate consumption against the group with the lowest consumption.
Five studies reported a beneficial link between higher levels of chocolate consumption and the risk of cardiovascular events. They found that the "highest levels of chocolate consumption were associated with a 37% reduction in cardiovascular disease and a 29% reduction in stroke compared with lowest levels. " No significant reduction was found in relation to heart failure.
The authors say the findings need to be interpreted with caution, in particular because commercially available chocolate is very calorific (around 500 calories for every 100 grams) and eating too much of it could lead Co weight gain, risk of diabetes and heart disease.
However, they conclude that given the health benefits of eating chocolate, initiatives to reduce the current fat and sugar content in most chocolate products should be explored.
32. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?
A. There used to be studies about the beneficial link between chocolate consumption and heart health.
B. Millions of people will die from heart disease according to the WHO.
C. There are still other factors that may reduce the risk of heart disease.
D. There is a clear evidence about how eating chocolate affects your heart.
33. What are the possible causes of heart disease?
A. Eating chocolate B. Unhealthy diet
C. Exercising regularly D. Drinking coffee.
34. What does the underlined word initiatives in the last paragraph mean?
A. Plans B. Needs C. Chocolate D. Benefits
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. We should eat less chocolate.
B. Chocolate benefits our health
C. We should consider the fat and sugar problem.
D. Eating chocolate will lead to fat gain naturally.

In my school life, the most unforgettable person is my math teacher. Not only did she helped us in class but also after class. I still remember the time that I got a “B” in the final exam. I liked math best but the teacher took pride in me all the time. However, I failed. I felt so disappointing that I lost my energy and confident. Then one day, I happened to meet her in the street, and my face turned red right away. She told me to give up and encourage me to work much more harder. 书面表达
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am very glad to hear that your school will start an English Summer Camp which includes a variety of courses, such as cooking, swimming, giving first aid, playing football or basketball. I am interested in giving first aid and I am writing to sign up for the course.
I choose to attend the courses due to the fact that first aid is of great importance to people. If a person gets injured and needs medical care before a doctor can be called in, every second counts in saving life, in which case the knowledge of first aid can help save lives. Besides personally, I plan to study medicine and devote my life to medical research. Hopefully, the course will help me to learn about how to deal with medical emergencies.
I would appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration.
Yours,
LiHua

(Text 1)
W: Jack, are you going to play tennis with us today?
M: I’m sorry — I already promised Bill I’d go swimming with him.
(Text 2)
W: I wonder if Alex will be here by 8 o’clock. He is supposed to be.
M: His mother said he left at 7:30, so he would be here by 8:15 at the latest.
(Text 3)
W: I know you want to go to China or Korea, but I really want to spend the vacation in Italy.
M: Whatever you like, honey.
(Text 4)
W: You should have a look at the new MP4 player that’s just come in. It’s a new design, and it comes in four colors: light green, dark blue, black and brown.
M: That’s exactly what I’m looking for. Hmm … I know most boys would prefer blue, but I think I’d like a green one.
(Text 5)
M: Excuse me, Lily?
W: What’s up?
M: I was wondering if you would be free to have dinner with me this Sunday.
W: I’d love to, but I have to help my sister with her homework.
(Text 6)
M: Hi, Angela. What are you doing?
W: I’m trying to figure out how to bake a cake. Tomorrow is Mother’s Day.
M: Ah, that’s why you want to bake a cake! Why don’t you just buy a card or a dozen flowers?
W: Well, I don’t really have all that much money at the moment. What did you get for
Mom?
M: It’s a secret. You know, if you don’t have enough money to buy a gift, why don’t you just clean the house? Mom will love that. Then she can have a relaxing day tomorrow.
W: That sounds like a good idea.
(Text 7)
W: Hmm … Sleeping on the job, Frank? Did you stay up late working last night?
M: No.
W: Did you go to a party last night?
M: No. I don’t have a very busy social life. It’s my car. It broke down yesterday, so it’s in the shop being fixed.
W: So how did you come to work this morning?
M: It’s a bit complicated. I first walked to the station and then took the subway downtown. Next, I took the bus; and, finally, I walked again for about 10 minutes from the bus stop to the office. It took me about 2 hours in all. So I got up too early this morning — at 5 am. I felt very sleepy now.
W: That’s terrible.
(Text 8)
W: Hey, Mike, I was wondering if you could do me a favor.
M: That depends. What is it?
W: It’s kind of a big favor. I’m absolutely flat broke, and I owe my landlady $500. She’s given me until this Friday to give it to her, but I don’t get paid until next Wednesday. Do you think you could lend me some cash until I get paid?
M: I’d love to help you out, but I’m a bit short on cash this month as well. I had to get a new cell phone and that ate up my savings.
W: If you can’t lend me the full amount, even just a bit would still help. I’ll pay you back next Wednesday evening, I promise.
M: Let’s see … I’ve got about $200 to get me through the following seven days, so I can only spare another $200.
W: Thanks a lot, Mike.
(Text 9)
W: Ted, is it true that Leonardo da Vinci once drew a flying machine?
M: Yes. He did it in the 1480s after studying birds in action, but he never built the flying machine.
W: How about manned balloons? Do you know when the first manned balloon was launched?
M: Yes! People did that in France in 1783. It wasn’t until 1903 that Orville and Wilbur Wright took the first controlled flights in an engine-powered aircraft in North Carolina.
W: Do you know anything about Charles Lindbergh?
M: Yes. He was the American who made the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean alone.
W: Has a woman ever done that?
M: Yes. In 1932 an American woman named Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean alone.
W: Who was the first American to travel into space?
M: John Glenn, in 1962. Twenty-one years later, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space.
W: That’s amazing. Ted, do you think people will be able to live on another planet one day?
M: Yes, I think so. With the development of technology, I’m sure a planet suitable for humans will be found sooner or later.
(Text 10) W
Now, I just like to tell you some of the things to look out for as you go round the school. At present we’re standing just at the front entrance to the school. To our right we have the car park, OK? To our left we have our sports field. This is just for training and informal games. We use the village football field for our under-eleven matches. At the far end of the car park is our recycling centre; this is for things like paper, glass and so on and everyone is very welcome to make use of it. Immediately behind the school, to the north, we have the play area — unfortunately we had to remove the play
equipment because it didn’t meet the safety regulations. But we do have the tree house in the middle. Then at the top end of the play area, you’ll find the entrance to the secret garden. The children love this because it attracts all sorts of wildlife: frogs, fish and lots of birds. But we don’t have dogs and cats. I should just mention the trees; there are over 30 different species, all planted by the children. In the middle of the garden we have what we call the story teller’s chair, and this is where the children come with their teachers to sit on the grass to listen to stories. Right, now before we …
