Bike sharing have become popular words in cities from Cape Town to Shanghai to Melbourne. Planners, politicians and media keep showing off their benefits: reducing pollution, congestion, travel costs and oil dependence, while improving public health. Bike sharing also helps make cities appear modern, dynamic and world-wide—qualities much sought after by the creative class.
But what makes for a successful public bike-sharing program? This is an important question because installing one requires significant public and private investment and adjustment to the built environment.
While many programs have been launched among much praise, often their popularity has soon declined. Many end up operating at a financial loss and depend on other profitable enterprises to cross-subsidize(交叉补贴) them. Some have resulted in thrown-away bikes becoming an eyesore.
Understanding which factors enhance or stop public bike sharing is critical in helping cities decide whether such a program is workable, before considering what design and sitting will work best.
Drawing on current knowledge, we discuss the importance of the local landscape, climate, cycling infrastructure (基础设施) and land use. We also touch on other factors, such as the legal environment and the characteristics of the bike-sharing program itself.
Take natural environment for example. Two natural environment factors are known to affect participation: hilliness and weather. Hilliness discourages balanced bike-sharing use, as users avoid returning bicycles to stations on hilltops. Those stations end up being empty, while stations on flat areas are often full, so users cannot find a station to return their bikes
As for weather, ideal temperature ranges vary by the climate zone. Case studies show warm and dry weather encourages public bike-sharing use. Rain and strong wind
reduce the frequency of trips. However, some approaches, such as providing sheltered,
shaded, or even heated or cooled cycling infrastructure, could prove useful.
24. What can we infer about bike sharing from Paragraph 1?
A. It has no disadvantage. B. It is welcomed worldwide.
C. It can solve every problem. D. It is the symbol of modern cities.
25. What is the current situation of bike-sharing programs?
A. Many of them run at a loss.
B. Most of them make huge profits.
C. They are the most promising business.
D. Their development is determined by public investment.
26. Why does the author mention the natural environment?
A. To show user’s interest in various natural environment.
B. To show the decisive function of natural environment.
C. To show the necessity of bike-sharing programs.
D. To show the significance of some factors.
27. Which of the following might increase bike-sharing use?
A. Hilliness. B. Attractive bikes.
C. Rain and strong wind. D. Perfect cycling infrastructure.
C
For many, music is as important to the human experience as eating and breathing. We hear music everywhere—at home, the gym, parties and stores. But what kind of music do we prefer to listen to, and when and why do our musical preferences change?
The relationship between the change of seasons and musical preferences was the focus of a study led by psychologist Terry Pettijohn. He and his team based their research on a previous study that examined the relationship between popular music preferences and the Environmental Security Hypothesis(假设). The results showed that over time, when social and financial conditions were more risky, the songs of the year that were slower, longer, more comforting and serious were most popular. And during periods in which social and financial conditions were generally stable, the result was opposite.
Building on these findings, Pettijohn and his team wondered if the Hypothesis could also be applied to the change of seasons. For college students, the participants in this study, autumn begins at the start of the school year. Gone are the carefree days of summer, when school is out. Winter means colder temperatures, shorter days, and, in many places in the country, snow. Spring, however, is a different story. It represents a fresh start and when clocks spring forward, we gain an extra hour of daylight. As students walk into summer, they’re absorbed in the sunshine and social activities—
and enjoy a break from school.
But do changing seasonal conditions influence musical preferences? To answer this question, the researchers designed two studies. What did they find? Both groups of college students favored more serious music during the seasons of fall and winter, and more active and energetic music during the spring and summer seasons. And these findings, Pettijohn argues, have practical significances.
28. The purpose of the question raised in Paragraph 1 is to ________.
A. present a different opinion on music
B. prove where to listen to music matters
C. stress the importance of music to humans
D. introduce the topic on musical preferences
29. What influences a person’s choice of music types according to the previous study?
A. Whether one has enough free time.
B. Whether one lives in a stable situation.
C. Whether one is exposed to sunlight.
D. Whether one chooses to change his life.
30. What does Paragraph 3 imply?
A. Students aren’t fond of school in any season.
B. Spring has a special meaning to people.
C. The Hypothesis disagrees with Pettijohn’s studies.
D. The length of summer time is longer than that of winter time.
31. How does Pettijohn feel about the findings of his studies?
A. It’s unexpected. B. It’s humorous.
C. It’s discouraging. D. It’s significant.
D
There was a rich merchant(商人)who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most. He gave her nothing but the best. He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He’s very proud of her and always wanted to show her off to his friends. He too, loved his 2nd wife. If the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out.
Now, the merchant’s 1st wife has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.
One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. Thus, he asked the 4th wife, “I loved you most. Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?”
“No way!” replied the 4th wife and she turned away without another word. The 3rd and 2nd wife gave him the same answer. Then a voce called out: “I’ll leave with you. I’ll follow you no matter where you go.” The merchant looked up and said, “I should have taken much better care of you while I could have!”
Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives. The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we spend in making it look good, it’ll leave us when we die.
Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others.
The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we’re alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave(坟墓).
The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often ignored in our search of material, wealth and pleasure. Guess what? It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. We are not to ignore it. Perhaps it’s a good idea to develop and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we’re on our death bed to cry.
32. Which of the merchant’s wives devotes herself to him most?
A. the first one B. the second one
C. the third one D. the fourth one
33. If the merchant is in trouble, what is he likely to do?
A. He often deals with the problems himself.
B. He will ask his second wife for help
C. He will rid of the trouble with the first wife
D. Nobody will help him
34. From the passage, we can infer that____________.
A. we shouldn’t marry four wives
B. only one wife is our best choice
C. The merchant prefers his wives to his possessions
D. our soul is more valuable than anything else
35. In the last paragraph, the underlined word “it” refers to ___________.
A. body B. wealth C. soul D. pleasure

Dear WWF,
I’m Li Hua, one of a high school students. I am writing to inform you of the situation where the birds are living. Some people are catching the lovely birds in the woods on the top of the mountain in our area. What’s worse, a few people even put birds on tables for dinner
It is known that animals and birds are human beings’ friends. We are to live harmoniously with them. For one thing, they can catch pests of the plants for farmers. For another, without birds our forests would not be lively and our environment would miss a friendly member.
In order to protect birds from being caught or killed, we should widely spread the laws of animal protection .Besides, education and raising people’s awareness are effective measures.
Yours sincerely
Li Hu
