Hello and welcome to Reading! We’re the Rock family, and we’re looking forward to sharing our home with you for the following three months.
Front doors
There are three keys on the keying we’re given you. Two of them open the front door, and the third one opens the inside door. You may find it difficult to lock and unlock the doors in the first week, and you’ll probably need some practice before you get it right! Please make sure to keep the inside door closed between the months of October and April, because this will mike it cheaper for us to heat the house during the colder weather!
Shopping for groceries
Marks &Spencer—at the petrol station near the 17 bus stop at the Three Tuns crossroads (a ten-minute walk from our house). This is also quite expensive, but is open very early and very late. Lidl—this is where our family does most of our shopping. Our local Lidl supermarket is in Woodley, and we usually go there twice or three times a week. Lidl is one of the cheapest supermarkets in Reading, but it doesn’t sell a wide range of products. There is also a Korean shop on the University campus which sells Chinese food products. You can find it in Students’ Union building in the center
of campus.
Boiling water
We know that most Chinese people like to drink hot water. You are welcome to boil water in our kettle, but water in Britain houses is always safe to drink without boiling. (If you visit a place in Britain where the water isn’t safe to drink, there will be a sign to tell you so.)
Trains in Reading
Trains: Our nearest railway station is not Reading station, but Earley. It is possible to catch a train from Reading railway station to Earley station, but maybe this won’t be very useful for you, because Earley station is very difficult to find if you are walking, and it takes about 20 minutes to walk between our house and Earley station. Most people prefer to catch a bus into town instead.
21. Why do the host family want the inside door closed?
A. To protect themselves from theft.
B. To save money to heat the room.
C. To keep the room warm in winter.
D. To avoid practicing how to open it.
22. What is the disadvantage of Lidl?
A. It is quite expensive. B. It opens long hours.
C. It is far away from the house. D. It sells limited products.
23. Who is the text written for?
A. Chinese visitors. B. Korean students. C. Reading trainers. D. Railway workers.
B
She will face the challenges of riding a bike to school or not being able to climb the monkey bars during playtime. But little Ella Peggie, who was born without her left arm, will get an extraordinary opportunity to share a life-changing bond with her new beloved pet, three-legged puppy.
When her mother, Brooke Hodgson, saw the one-year-old puppy named Snowy, she knew instantly it would be the perfect companion for her one-year-old daughter. “My heart
skipped a beat when I saw Snowy online,” Ms. Hodgson said. It took just three days for the puppy, who recently had surgery to remove a leg, to find a new home after she was sent to the animal shelter last week.
“I knew she was going to be perfect for Ella—they share the same age so they both have a long life of friendship ahead of them. I just know that Snowy is going to increase her confidence when she is growing up. It’s going to be great for Ella when she realizes she’s different or when she’s having a bad day, she will see the resemblance and know that she’s not alone.
Ms. Hodgson has been touched by the relationship between the pair since the lively puppy became the latest addition to the family. And she believes the caring puppy will be by Ella’s side through the highs and lows of her life. Ms. Hodgson said, “Ever morning Snowy looks for Ella first before she runs to anyone else. It’s quite a unique link. I’m just thankful that I was able to give her this dog. I just can’t wait for them to get even closer. Not many people are able to do this for their children so we’re very lucky to have Snowy. I can’t even explain how I feel right now.” The young mother said Snowy, who was welcomed into the family just a week ago, has been playing a very special part to Ella’s life as well as her three-year-old brother Blake and her father, Stewart Peggie.

Point a high-powered telescope at the constellation Cetus(鲸鱼座)and it is just possible to make out a dim red dwarf(矮星)star shining in the tail. Although it might seem not be seen, circling around that star is a rocky planet that could hold the answer to whether we are alone in the universe.
Scientists say the planet is a “Super-Earth” which is the best place to look for signs of life outside of the Solar System. Early indications suggest it has an atmosphere, and sits within the “Goldilocks Zone” where it is neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water to exist. And it is only 40 light years from Earth meaning that it could be possible to send a signal.
“This is the most exciting exoplanet(外星球)I’ve seen in the past decade,” said lead author Jason Dittmann of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. “We could hardly hope for a better target to perform one of the biggest quests in science—searching for evidence of life beyond Earth.”
The planet was found by an international team of scientists. The new world named LHS 1140b, is ten times closer to its parent star than the Earth. But because its parent star is far cooler than the Earth, the planet still sits in the habitable zone.
For life as we know it to exist, a planet must have liquid surface water and keep an atmosphere. In this case, the planet’s large size and closeness to its sun means that a magma(岩浆)ocean could have existed on its surface for millions of years, which fed steam into the atmosphere, filling the planet with water.
Astronomers estimate the age of the planet to be at least five billion years, just a little older than Earth. They also evaluated that it has a diameter(直径)1.4 times larger than the Earth. But the exoplanet is probably made of rock.
28. What makes the planet a “habitable zone”?
A. It is near the Earth.
B. It is near the sun.
C. It is neither too hot nor too cold.
D. It is neither too big nor too small.
29. Why is the planet suitable for life in spite of being very near to its parent star?
A. It has more water. B. Its temperature is lower.
C. It is made of rock. D. Its parent star is cooler.
30. What is the best title of the passage?
A. A Newly-discovered Sun B. A New Super Earth
C. A Newly-found Rule D. The Far-reaching discovery
31. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word in the third paragraph?
A. Exploration. B. Invention. C. Imagination. D. Ambition.

A cab company in one of Japan’s major cities is introducing silent taxi drivers. Miyako Taxi, which is based in Kyoto, shows the new idea in March. The business is currently operating five “Silence Taxis” across the city.
The cars look like an ordinary taxi, but a notice written on the back of the passenger seat will inform passengers that they have entered one of the new silent taxis. Drivers will offer a greeting when their passenger enters the car, and aside from confirming the route they will not engage in small talk. The drivers can talk only if they are spoken to first, and they are also allowed to communicate in emergency situations.
Announcing the idea, Miyako Taxi said, “This service is currently in a trial stage, with the goal of creating an in-car atmosphere that provides the most comfortable ride for passengers through limiting the driver’s speaking.” According to Japan Today, they made the move after hearing reports from passengers that they were fed up being forced to chat with their drivers.
The company will assess the popularity of the trial before deciding whether to expand it and roll it out across more of their drivers.
Language and speaking is at the heart of another issue facing Uber drivers, after they lost a High Court Battle to block written tests in London. Drivers applying for a minicab license in the capital will now have to pass the written exam following
Uber’s failed challenger against Transport for London (TFL). The company argued it could see up to 33,000 existing drivers lost their licences under the new rules.
The company’s London head, Tom Elvidge, determined to challenge the ruling, said, “We’ve always supported spoken English skills, but writing an essay has nothing to do with communicating with passengers or getting them safely from A to B.”
32. According to the passage, the “Silence Taxis” .
A. has gained wide popularity in Japan
B. has not operated yet
C. looks like an ordinary taxi
D. is not safe enough for passengers
33. When we are in the “Silence Taxis”, .
A. no one can say anything during the driving

D. Changing the impression of the taxi drivers in Japan.
35. What is the attitude of Tom Elvidge to the “Silence Taxis”?

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How do you write a short story? How is writing a short story different from writing a novel? These are tough questions to answer. 36 Still, if you want to write a short story, here are some steps to help you get started:
1. Read Short Stories.
Real writers read, and as Stephen King said, “If you don’t have time to read,
you don’t have time to write.” 37 Even if you’ve read hundreds of stories, studying one or two closely will help improve your understanding of the short story form.
2. Write Your Short Story.
Some guides suggest focusing on writing an attractive first paragraph first, but while that’s important, it puts a lot of pressure on you when you’re first getting started writing your short story. Just write. Just put pen to paper. 38 It’s not important. You just need to get your short story started.
3. Rewrite and Edit.
All good writing is rewriting. After you write your first draft, you need to start cutting, rewrlting, and editing your short story. 39 And it can feel like walking through a swamp(湿地)or climbing through a very tight cave. However, don’t give up now. You’re almost there.
4. Submit!
Before you submit your short story, make sure you’ve read it aloud several times to find any grammatical errors. Then, skim several literary magazines of the same type and read their submission guidelines to know if your short story will be a good fit.
40 Don’t overthink it. Just do it. It will be hard to let go of your short story, but you can’t get it published if you don’t submit.
A. Don’t worry about what comes out.
B. Get some suggestions from other writers.
C. This is the hardest part of writing a short story.
D. There are as many types of short stories as novels.
E. Finally, it’s time to send your baby out into the world.
F. If you want to be a writer, you should consider writing short stories.
G. If you’ve never read a short story, you’re going to have a difficult time writing one.

书面表达:
Dear Joan,
I’m writing to tell you something about private cars in China. As is reported, more and more cars are coming to Chinese families. They’re certainly making people’s life easy. But they’re causing many problems, too. There are more traffic jams and traffic accidents on the streets, killing many more people. Those accidents are mostly caused by careless or even drunk drivers.
Personally, to enjoy the convenience of the cars and prevent the problems, all drivers should be aware of the importance of careful driving. Laws should be made
and carried out strictly to punish those road killers. Besides, public transportation should be greatly improved so that people can go to and from work by bus instead of driving their cars.
Yours,
Li Hua
