We had two young kids and lived in town. Both my husband and I worked long days. As a result, we didn’t have much time for our kids. They often stayed alone in the house when we were out. They weren’t happy, as you can guess. One day, my husband and I decided to buy a dog for them to make them happier.
Our kids loved that idea. We started searching newspaper,and it wasn’t long before we found puppies for sale. So we decided to hike from one small town to another and found an old farmhouse. Our kids were way ahead of us running as fast as they could to see what their puppy is like. “ She’s under the sofa,” the owner said with a smile.
And that’s when we got our first look at the little dog. My daughter picked up the
brown-and-white pup with soft ears and paws. She looked up with the biggest and brownest eyes I’d ever seen, and I said,“ We’ll take her.” And after we took Sadie home, our kids often ran outdoors with her after school. They became so much happier.
Two years ago, my husband and I decided to move to the countryside. On the day we moved, we loaded Sadie in the truck. By the time we reached our new house, Sadie was beyond herself with joy. As we pulled into the drive-way, she gave a bark of excitement. She ran here and there happily. Seeing how happy she was, I thought of the days our kids were left alone at home. I realized what a big role the dog had played in their lives!
I should thank Sadie. Because of her, our kids had a much happier childhood.

Some people say global English is no longer just controlled by British or American English, but is running free and developing unique (独一无二的) local forms. Can you figure out the following terms?
“I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face.” This is a way of saying “Keep off the grass.” Or “people mountain, people sea”， which means “very crowded”．
These examples are what we call Chinglish. When it comes to Chinglish, if all you know is “good good study, day day up”， you will be considered “out man”．
Nowadays, more Chinglish words have been created, for example, a Chinese idiom is translated as “smilence”， a combination of the English words smile and silence.
Chinglish usually offers a humorous look at the misuse of the English language in Chinese street signs, products, and advertising. They are favored by some English－speaking tourists and visitors. Dominic Swire has been living in Beijing for a couple of years. He said, “I think many Chinese people complain about the Chinglish and badly translated English. But you know, sometimes for us foreigners, it's actually quite charming to see them. I think if the translations of English in China were all perfect, then something would be lost from the Chinese culture.”
However, Chinglish will probably become a “cultural relic”in the near future. Beijing has made a comprehensive plan to improve foreign language services and eliminate Chinglish within five years. “It is very ridiculous(可笑的) to see Chinglish on the signs in some scenic spots. And they are a kind of barriers for communication between Chinese and people from other countries，” a Beijinger said.
Some Chinese university experts side with Chinglish. They argue that English has absorbed elements from other languages such as French and Spanish in its growth, and now it's Chinese's turn.

Silvia Maier works at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. She and her colleagues invited 51 young men into the lab for 3 hours of tests. They showed each man 180 food items on a computer. Each time, they asked the men to judge how healthy, tasty and appealing the food was.
Then the researchers stressed out 29 of the men. They did this by asking each to put one hand in ice water for three minutes. If the water was too unpleasant, the volunteers could remove their hands, but must continue looking into a video camera. The men were also encouraged to put their hands back into the cold water. All the while, a researcher watched and videotaped the ordeal (考验). Another 22 men held one hand in warm water. They were not videotaped.
Afterward, the researchers showed each man a series of two food items. They did this 210 times. And before making choices, the men were told to choose the healthier of the two items. When the testing was over, the scientists gave the volunteers a snack. Each man got one of the items he had said that he preferred. Despite being coached to choose healthy foods, the stressed men proved more likely to pick the less healthy.
The researchers also performed brain scans of the volunteers. It showed what part of the brain was active as they made their choices. “Our findings indicate that stress affects the decision making,” Maier’s team concluded. And it does this by changing two brain pathways. One affects
sensory information, such as taste. The other affects a person’s ability to make decisions such as eating what is good for us.
More studies will be needed to confirm the new findings. But the early signs suggest that stress not only makes junk food more appealing, but also weakens the brain’s ability to resist eating it.
