New York—A truck struck a 56-year-old woman riding a Citi Bike through Midtown Thursday morning, and officers Dimitri Coutsouvelis and Thomas Demery came to her rescue, officials said.
Two counter-terrorism policemen on Sixth Ave. near W. 47th St. spotted the white truck dragging the Citi Bike about 9:30 a. m. — moments after it struck the woman, who was found lying on the street with an injured right leg, frightened witnesses said.
“She was just lying there in a lot of pain,” said Stanford Dawson, 57, who sells goods on the comer of Sixth Ave. and 48th St. “You could see her leg was turned back and the knee bones were sticking out through the skin.’’
One of the policemen ran after the truck and forced it to stop while the other tended to the woman.
“The driver acted a little confused about what happened,” said Police Officer Thomas Demery, who ran to stop the truck after hearing the “sound of the bike being dragged.”
“The woman suffered a deep gash on her leg from her knee to her hip,” said the policeman. “I kept telling her not to look at it, that it’s going to be fine. I kept comforting her.”
The ambulance rushed her to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. The driver of the truck remained at the scene, policemen said. No charges were immediately filed.
“I can’t tell you how proud I am of the work that the Critical Response Team does each and every day protecting New York City. Generally, people think they always face danger all day and sometimes they shall feel bored in the street,” said Counter-terrorism Chief James Waters. “They always perform admirably, including today.”
“It feels really good to be a part of helping fellow New Yorkers. That’s what we guys want to express most,” Demery said.
Cars have struck and killed many bicyclists so far this year, and the reported number of deaths is a 21 % increase compared to the 13 killed during the same time last year.
24. Which is right about the truck driver?
A. His over-speeding made the accident happen.
B. He kept driving, not knowing the accident.
C. He was arrested shortly after the accident.
D. He had his leg hurt in the accident.
25. Who ran to take care of the injured woman?
A. Thomas Demery.    B. James Waters.
C. Stanford Dawson.    D. Dimitri Coutsouvelis.
26. What do the policemen think of their work on the street?

C. Acceptable.    D. Dangerous.
A. She was struck by a truck.    B. She was badly injured in the foot.
C. She was lucky to get timely help.    D. She was unconscious in hospital.

Our family loves the snow and cheers at the first good storm of the season. While others may think of Florida, we dream of a cabin vacation in New York’s Allegany State Park.
One particular trip, I recall, was jus a bit more memorable than the rest. What we now refer to as the snow pants incident began accidentally enough. My husband, Bernie, and our 2-year-old daughter, Faith, were building a snow fort while I sledded down a nearby slope.
On the way back up from one trip, I saw a small stone tumbling down the track I had just made. I was puzzled, since all the other rocks were buried under several feet of snow, as I stood and wondered about the stone---it jumped! This was no stone. This was a mouse.
Now, I love nature, but that doesn’t include mice. I loudly protested the invader, and Bernie, coming to my rescue, assured me that this was not a mouse but a mole, as if that mattered. A mouse or a mole I still didn’t like it.
Bernie and I stood for a few minutes watching the creature disappear from the path into the furry white and come back out again. But soon it disappeared and I headed up the hill again.
Shortly after I left, my husband screamed out, saying that the mole had gone up the leg of his snow pants. You have to understand Bernie can be quite a joker, and I smelled a rat. Not wanting to be a sucker and fall for another one of his jokes, I laughed it off. When he started running for the cabin, though, I stopped laughing and decided maybe this was for real.
“Don’t you dare take that thing into the house!” I yelled. But like a flash, Bernie was already dashing through the cabin’s front door, with his snow pants, the mole and all. If it were me, I’d have been down to my long underwear right there in the snow without a second thought.
A few minutes later Bernie appeared. We relished the rest of our winter vacation, drinking lots of hot chocolate, sitting beside the fireplace and admiring nature---from a safe distance.
28. Why did the author’s husband come to her rescue?
A. Because the “mouse” frightened her
B. Because she hardly controlled the sled
C. Because the snow fort she built was damaged
D. Because she stepped on the stone and fell down
29. When her husband said that the mole had gone up the leg of his snow pants, the author was ________.
A. curious    B. puzzled
C. excited    D. doubtful
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. They enjoyed the rest of their holiday
B. They were fond of hot chocolate
C. Her husband had freedom at last
D. Nature can be dangerous at times
31. What could be the best title of the text?
A. A Memorable Experience with a Joker
B. The Painful Incident in Allegany State Park
C. Family’s Funny Vacation in the Snow
D. My Strong Love for Nature
D
Britons are increasingly entertaining guests at home with dinner, film and karaoke nights, inspired by television shows on cookery (烹饪术) and home entertainment, according to a survey.
More than half (53 percent) of the respondents to a poll (民意测验) of 1,000 Britons across the country said they now prefer to spend quality time with family and friends by inviting them over to their homes rather than meeting in bars and restaurants, the survey by mobile phone operator T-Mobile showed.
Popular television shows such as “Come Dine With Me,” where amateur chefs attempt to wow the audience with their culinary (烹调的) skills, “Master Chef” where ordinary people compete to cook to Michelin standards (米其林餐厅评分标准) and a number of celebrity cookery shows have inspired Britons to entertain at home.
The poll showed that nearly a third of respondents had spent money on home entertainment improvements such as sofas, dining tables and bigger televisions to impress the guests.
“Over the last couple of years, my clients have increasingly asked for home parties rather than ones at independent places,” party planning expert Liz Brewer said in a statement accompanying the poll’s results.
“This is not only due to a slowing of economic activity but because many have become increasingly house-proud and eager to show off their cooking skills, in addition to their latest home entertainment purchases.”
Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver was the top choice for dream host of respondents, while Prime Minister Gordon Brown was one of the least favored, alongside Conservative leader David Cameron.
32. Britons’ interest in entertaining guests at home is growing because of the impact of       .
A. Michelin standards      B. television programs
C. fast economic development     D. mobile phone operator T-Mobile
33. The underlined word “wow” in Paragraph 3 probably means “      ”.
A. fill      B. compare
C. impress     D. associate
34. To entertain guests at home, the hosts have to       .
a. purchase certain furniture
b. improve their cooking skills
c. consult a party planning expert first
d. ask some professional chefs to help
A. a and b    B. c and d
C. a and d    D. b and c
35. What can be learned from the passage?
A. The service of most British restaurants is not satisfactory.
B. Politicians are the top choice for dream host of respondents.
C. Two thirds of Britons are willing to entertain guests at home.
D. Entertaining guests at home will strengthen the relationships.

Different Cultures
The cultures of the East and the West really distinguish each other a lot. ___36___ .
The origin of the Eastern culture is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers---the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India .    ___37___
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was brought up on the Mesopotamian Plain ---the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Rome.___38___ Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlanta Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t distinguish from the European culture a lot.
At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences. Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race differences count as well. But what s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. ___39___
The differences are everywhere. ___40___ But different cultures make the world of 21st century more colorful. The cultural gap should not be the obstacle to the civilization of human being. It ought to be the motivation of our going farther.
A. Let us work together to keep a variety of cultures.
B. And these two are well - known as the base of the European culture.
C. One important thing is to learn about other cultures.
D. This is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the whole.
E. They are obvious and affect people's ways of thinking and their views of the world.
F. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.
G. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.

Dear Amanda,
I am glad to know that you are interested in the Singing Chinese Folk Songs Contest to be held in your hometown. It is a good chance to show your talent for music, so I encourage you to sign up for it.
Actually, there is no need to worry about whether you will win or lose. What matters most is that you can improve your Chinese by participating in the contest. What's more, in the activity you can make more friends who are interested in learning Chinese. If you want to do a great job, you should do more practice before the contest. Of course, it is a good idea to listen to some Chinese music programs before the contest so that you can get a much better understanding of Chinese fold music.
I am sure you can do a good job! Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua
