Earlier this week, 23 robots from all over the world competed in Pomona, California, for a $ 2 million prize in the DARPA Robotics Challenge. Teams have been working on these robots for three years—their challenge was to build a robot that can aid in disaster. The rules are simple—each robot has one hour to score eight points for various tasks, which include driving a car, opening a door.
Every team has people in a separate garage, sitting around big screens and controlling their own robots. Across the garage stands Carnegie Mellon’s bright red robot, CHIMP. “It has arms and hands but it’s different in the sense that it doesn’t walk to get around; it rolls around on these tracks,” says Tony Stentz, team leader of team Tartan Rescue. “CHIMP can go from upright to all—fours in just a few seconds. Weighing in at around 440 pounds, it seems certain to win in the competition,” he said.
During the early drive, CHIMP almost went into the road block. It was slow getting out of the car, but once it made it out, and opened the door, it dropped to the ground in the doorway. For all the other teams, a fall means that humans have to step in and get the robot back on its feet. But about five minutes later, CHIMP got back without any help.
The team didn’t get any points for that move, but recovering from a fall would come in pretty handy in a disaster area. And CHIMP still completes all the tasks in under an hour. “What a bang-up job!” Stentz said as he received handshakes and high-fives from the crowd.
Though CHIMP was clearly the winner on the first day of finals, it ran into lots of trouble on the second day and ended up coming in third place overall. Team KAIST, from South Korea, took the $2 million prize; Florida-based Team IHMC Robotics came in second and won $1 million. “After two days, hopefully we’re all a step closer to making humans safer after disaster,” added Tony Stenz.
24.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.The robots are worth $ 2 million in total.
B.The robots are required to complete several jobs.
C.The competitors are from 23 different countries.
D.The robots are able to think for themselves.
25.What did CHIMP do during the competition?
A.Scored eight points. B.Beat Team KAIST.
C.Fell down suddenly. D.Kept moving on all fours.
26.What does the underlined word “bang-up” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.dangerous B.difficult C.temporary D.great

A new program encouraging children ages 9 to 12 to get interested in computers, math and science starts next week at all 36 libraries of the San Diego Public Library.
Called “Spring into STEAM,” the program will offer workshops in March, April
and May . It begins on March2.
“We know that science education is so important now, and technology is changing so fast,” said Misty Jones, library director. “We see this as a way to bring kids new ideas and help them know more about the world around them.”
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math, and there will be workshops in each area. For math, the kids will learn spatial geometry (空间几何学) by making 3-Dpaper insects. Kids in other workshops will learn computer coding , create a light using a glass bottle, or build insects using pipe cleaners and LED lights.
Jones said she’s also excited about the chance for children to take part in the International Barcode of Life Project, which is trying to create a digital catalog(电子目录) of different kinds of insects on Earth. Kids in San Diego can ask for free insect collection tools at their local libraries beginning on March 2. Insects they collect can then be sent in for DNA identification.
Jones said it is unusual for every library to start the same program at the same time. “It’s something we’ve been trying to do, and I think it’s just the beginning of the chances we will be able to offer,” she said.
27. What do we know about “Spring into STEAM”?

You wouldn’t want that job! But robots are doing such jobs right now and have been for the last 20 years. And they do the same job again and again without getting tired. 31 So in some ways robots make better factory workers than humans.
Thousands of robots are at work right now in factories all over the world. 32 Large robots lift heavy parts or weld cars together. Similar robots do delicate tasks, like putting candy into boxes.
In automobile factories, robots are replacing people in paint shop. Paint fumes can
make people sick. 33 They can even paint in the dark to save electricity.
34 Some robots work in offices, carrying and delivering mail. They look like carts with places for holding the mail. The robots are programmed to stop at pickup stations and travel through the office on a set path.
Robots can also explore the ocean. They search underwater for lost ships, search for oil and gas, mine the ocean floor, and help to do scientific research. 35
Robots, not astronauts, were the first explorers from Earth to go to the Moon. For now human beings cannot visit some planets of our solar system. But robots can.
In the future robots will be doing more and more of our difficult, dangerous and boring jobs and will leave humans more time to do interesting things.
A.Not all robots work in factories.
B.But robots don’t mind the fumes.
C.Some companies even produce smart robots.
D.People do get tired, make mistakes and get hurt.
E.There are good reasons for using robots rather than humans.
F.The size and shape of a working robot is determined by its job.
G.They can go into places that are too dangerous for human divers.

Max works as a security guard at a famous museum. As a security guard, Max watches visitors to the museum as they come and go. He often wonders things about them. Where do they come from? Are they happily married? What do they do for a living?
One day, Max notices a very pretty woman visiting the exhibit he is guarding. He has seen her before. In fact, she often comes to see the rare jewelry exhibit – sometimes several times a week.
During one of these visits, she starts a conversation with Max. She asks if it is difficult to be a security guard and if he ever gets bored. She introduces herself as Maria, a fashion designer.
When Maria comes to visit, she often talks with Max. “Maybe she likes me,” he thinks.
Max thinks she is very interesting and wants to spend more time with her. During one of their talks at the museum, he finds out that she is studying Italian.
He lies and tells her he has always wanted to learn Italian. He is simply using Italian as a trick. And it works! Max and Maria meet every Saturday afternoon in the museum garden to study Italian.
During the lessons, they also talk about themselves. Maria shares her dreams of one day showing her fashions in a museum. Max tells her many details about his security job, including the security code and the locations of alarms. He jokes that it would be very easy to rob the museum.
Over the passing weeks, they learn more about each other. What Max doesn’t learn, however, is that Maria is not as innocent as she looks. Maria is actually an international
jewel thief! Police from eight different countries have been searching for her in the past two years!
Her latest goal is to steal the rare Black Diamond! This diamond is the most valuable diamond in the world and it is part of the exhibit that Max is guarding. All her attention on him was a trick to learn more about the museum’s security system.

第一节 参考范文:应用文写作(满分15分)
Dear editor,
I'm Li Hua, I'm writing to tell you about some symptoms of anxiety among us students before exams.
Most of us feel nervous when taking an important exam. Some feel dizzy or tired, some lose their appetites and the others even suffer from sleep problems, of which all have terrible effects on our exams.
Then how to get rid of these bad symptoms? In my opinion, first of all, it's important to have a positive attitude towards exams, as they are only a means of checking how we are getting along with our study, so there is no need to worry too much about the exam results. Study hard every day and make careful plans; and then we will reduce the pressure of exams.
Besides, enough sleep can make us energetic and enable us to perform well in an exam. Therefore, we shouldn't stay up too late before the exams. Having a hot bath or a cup of milk before going to bed can contribute to a sound sleep.

第二节 读后续写
Paragraph 1:
One night after the museum closes, Maria appears at the gate of the museum. She enters the building quietly using the security code that Max shared with her. “When dealing with a beautiful woman, men can be so stupid,” she laughs to herself. She sneaks into the jewelry exhibit and destroys the alarms. Then she walks up to the glass case protecting the Black Diamond and unlocks it with the key she stole from Max. She laughs, “The Black Diamond is mine!”
Paragraph 2:
As she holds the diamond in her hands, the lights in the museum go on. Then an alarm sounds and a team of police run in. They have caught her! As a police officer handcuffs Maria, the lead police investigator comes into the room. Her surprise is so strong she is unable to speak. It is Max. She yells, “How could I have been fooled by you, a simple police detective?!” Max puts his badge back in his pocket and says, “You can think about that in prison, and by the way, I speak perfect Italian.”
