Last but not the least, critical thinking is also necessary. whichever subjects you study, critical thinking is a most important factor rather than just direct reciting.5 Good habits contribute to our success. If we insist on behaving ourselves properly, we are sure to face the future confidently! 录音原文 Text 1 W: Excuse me, Prof. Links. I’m having trouble hearing in the back of the room. Did you say that your teaching assistant would correct the final exams? M: No. I said that he would collect them, and I’ll correct them myself. Text 2 M: How often do you call your parents, Janet? I call mine every Saturday and every Sunday. W: I call my parents once a month. But they call me every two weeks. Text 3 M: It is so hot today. I was planning to clean the living room, wash the car, and do some gardening. But now, I’m not sure I should. W: Well, it’s too hot right now. You should start working later when it gets cooler. M: Maybe you are right. Text 4 M: How was your camping trip this past weekend? W: Well, it rained all weekend, so that kind of ruined the fun. We brought delicious food, but it was too wet to make it over the campfire. And we forgot to bring raincoats! Text 5 M: What a lot of spoons and forks! I guess I don’t completely know the culture here yet. W: Don’t worry. Most Americans don’t use these every day. They’re just for special events. M: I guess I’ll just watch the other people and figure out what to do. Text 6 W: More and more people are using reusable grocery bags now. M: I know, I have a few bags myself. They are much stronger than plastic bags, and I can fit more in them, too. W: Grocery stores like them, too, because they can make money by selling them. M: What’s more, you can use them for more than one purpose. I heard that only three percent of plastic bags get used again. Imagine all that waste! W: At my local grocery store, regular plastic bags aren’t free anymore. In addition, they take 10 cents off your bill for every reusable bag you bring yourself. M: It’s great to see we are taking steps to create a healthier environment. Text 7 W: Stan, you’ve already finished your essay? I’ve been working on mine for two weeks, and I’ll need another week before it’s finished. M: I know, Jenny, it’s a huge project — researching, thinking of an argument and then finding details that show the argument is true. W: That part only took me one week. But writing and rewriting, and then deleting and writing again…that’s killing me!6 M: That part didn’t bother me. W: What’s your secret? M: I write an outline: a basic plan of what I’m going to say. And then I fill it in with topics for each paragraph. After that, I put notes about what details to include. W: That sounds hard. M: It’s easier than you think, and when it’s time to write, everything goes really smoothly. I have an outline from last semester that I could show you, if you’re interested. Text 8 W: Can I help you, sir? M: Yes, you can! I’ve been sitting here for 10 minutes! I’m waiting for someone to put gas in my car. W: I’m sorry, sir. But this is a self-service station. M: Self-service? W: Yes. You have to fill up your car yourself. M: Are you serious? W: Yes. Are you a tourist or something? M: Yes, I’m from Singapore. I’ve been all over the world — France, Germany, and many other places — and I’ve never heard of a station where you fill up your own car. W: Well, in America, most gas stations are like this. M: Do I really have to do this? I don’t even know how. W: It’s not that hard. I’ll be happy to show you how. But next time, just look for a sign that says full-service gas station. M: What sign? W: Under the sign for the gas station, there will be a smaller sign that says Self-service or Full-service. M: I see. Thank you. Text 9 M: Thanks for agreeing to this interview, Mrs. Rogers. My teacher wants me to interview someone who lived during the 1940s. W: Of course, Joey. What’s your first question? M: Well, where were you living in 1940? W: In Minneapolis, Minnesota, where I was born and raised. M: Did you live with your family? W: Yes, with my parents and my younger brother. In 1943, I was 20 years old, and I moved to Washington D.C. by myself. I got a job as a typist for a newspaper. M: What was D.C. like? W: It was an exciting time to be living there. I got my interest in politics from being in the nation’s capital. When I moved to California, I went straight to Sacramento and got a job working for a state lawmaker. M: Were you in California when the war ended? W: No, I was still in D.C. I met my husband there, and we moved the following year, in 1946. M: How long did you work for the lawmaker?7 W: Well, I was a secretary for that politician for two years. Then I had my two girls and stayed home for a few years. But as soon as they were old enough, I ran for office myself. M: Really? Did you win? W: I did. I spent the next 20 years as a local politician. M: Wow. I’ve lived next door for years, and I didn’t even know that!
