Make good word choices. When we’re not sure which word is the right one for a sentence, look it up in a dictionary. Many of us choose words in a hurry and don’t take the time to decide if they’re proper.
E “Good word choices are necessary for good writing.”
1. 空格前后意思相反或矛盾,找含转折含义的选项;
5. But with a few simple steps, we can improve our writing skills and learn how to write better articles.(北京中考五选五)
D “It is not easy to become a better writer.”
1. 如果选项中含有代词,则判断哪个空格前的句中所含有的名词代入后使上下文连贯;
Every year in April, the London marathon(马拉松)takes place. The race covers a fantastic route(线路) in which runners pass lots of the famous places like the London Eye and Big Ben.______3____.(北京东城一模五选五)
19
37
Every year in April, the London marathon(马拉松)takes place.“伦敦马拉松在每年四月举行”,可知本段讲述的重点为伦敦马拉松,浏览选项可知B项People come from all over the world to run in it.
B“People come from all over the world to run in it.”
如果选项含有因果逻辑词,则判断哪个空格前后句与之符合因果逻辑关系;
Mr. Longman and Mr. Martin were both badly ill 1 . Mr. Longman was able to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon.(北京朝阳二模五选五)
C “They were in the same hospital room”.
1. 如果选项的表达类似于“There are mainly three types of …”则该选项一般位于文章较前面的位置,用于引出后文对这几种类型的详细阐述;
Many of us don’t spend a lot of time improving our writing skills. This can be a problem when we hand in our articles. Good writing skills will help us improve our grades and benefit us later in life.
B “The following tips can be helpful.”

When we arrived at the Mining Museum, we were taken to a room where we stored our bags. Our guide, Alison, then introduced us to a man named Bruce Binkley who is a miner.
Mr. Binkley talked to us about how people used to look for gold.2. It seemed simple. You get a pan, fill it with dirt and water and then swirl(旋动) it around until the big stones are washed out along with other things. Gold, being heavier, is left at the bottom.
Next, we walked upstairs to look at pictures, information and samples(样品) of gold. We filled in a worksheet about the early discoveries of gold in Australia.3. That part was really exciting because you had to imagine that you were a miner digging for gold.
Lunch was spent in a nearby park.4. They were yummy! We also played hide-and-seek while we were there.
5. We boarded the bus and felt very tired. Some children even slept on the bus!

When Grace ended the call, the clock said it was 00:15 am.But I still have homework left and I wanted to sleep. This was bad for a Junior 3 student who is going to take an important exam this June.
Finally I burst into tears. I felt so tired and realized that the stress had an effect on my health. I tried to get myself out.Studying is more important than other things, so Grace has to come the second. It’s now important for me to say no, no, no.
“Can you do me a favor?” Grace asked. “Sorry … I just have to review my biology notes,” I answered. “All right, it’s up to you,” she said. ______ (4). Anyway, it’s not so hard to say no at all.

题干意为“这个玻璃瓶在海里移动了多长时间?”,根据关键词“the weighted glass bottle move in the sea”可将答案锁定在第一段第二句中“The weighted glass bottle sank almost to the sea floor, and then it move slowly for 108 years and 138 days.”,故填“For 108 years and 138 days”。
答案:For 108 years and 138 days.

Yes.
37
What……is.
Who……is.
How to do …… / How……
The benefits / advantages / disadvantages of ……
例1. What is the passage mainly about?(朝阳一模)
解答:What shyness is and how to deal with it.
例2. What is the main idea of the passage?(石景山二模)
解答:How to run a studio system?

Scientists now understand that a fire can be a natural part of a healthy forest. As a result, countries like Australia allow more fires to burn naturally. Sometimes, fire fighters even start fires to get rid of(去除)dead wood. Of course, they carefully control the fires. The fire thins out old trees. This allows sunlight to reach the ground. As a result, fires help new trees to grow. Therefore, if a fire is not a serious threat(威胁)to people, firefighters may let it burn naturally.(北京燕山一模阅读表达)
问题:What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
In order to keep forests healthy, some fires may be allowed to burn naturally.
1. Do you think the selfie is good? Why?(.6
2. What can be filled in the blank(空白)at the end of letter B?(北京朝阳期末)

What can be filled in the blank(空白)at the end of letter B?
答案:they leave home to go to college/ live on their own ……
北京中考中阅读表达共五道小题,主旨题通常是最后一道小题,也是学生最容易丢分的一道题,常见的设题方式:1. What is the passage mainly about? 文章主要讲的是什么?;
2. What does the writer mainly tell us in passage? 在文章中作者主要告诉了我们什么?;
3. What is the main idea of paragraph X? 第X段的主要意思是什么?;
4. What do you learn from this story? 从这个故事中你能够了解到什么?;
5. What is the purpose of this passage?
或How……?”

Ready, Set, Jump!
For skydivers, the sky isn’t the limit. It’s just the beginning. Thousands of people try skydiving each year. Some only jump once, while others go on to experience lifelong adventures, flying and turning over through the air.
Skydiving is a method of leaving an airplane and returning to the earth with the help of gravity, then slowing down by using a parachute (降落伞). It may include more or less free-fall, a time during which the parachute has not been used and the body gradually accelerates (加速) to the highest speed.
There are three choices for the beginners. However, before you try skydiving, a ground course on safety is required. The first method is accelerated free-fall. You jump out of the plane while being held by two coaches, one on either side. They hold onto you until you open your parachute. The second
37
method is called static line. After jumping out, you will experience free-fall for a second or two. Then the weight of your body will pull the line tight, opening the parachute.
Tandem (串联) is the most popular because it is the easiest. You and the coach are tied together, the coach behind, with you in front. You jump out of the plane together, and the coach takes care of opening the parachute.
For each of these three methods, the coaches give instructions in the air with hand signals (信号) or a radio. If you are eager to try something challenging and would love to feel the freedom of flying, skydiving might be an adventure for you. Who knows? With risk and excitement mixed together, skydiving might just change your life.
What is the passage mainly about?
________________________________________________________________________________________________.
答案:What skydiving is and how beginners skydive.
Do you worry about your health? Have you tried to run or walk for exercise and then quit? If you answer yes, you should try a new type of exercise: aquatic exercise. Aquatic exercise is a kind of exercise you do in a swimming pool. For example, you can run, walk, or even do a mind-body practice, such as yoga.
More and more people are trying aquatic exercise. In the United States, the number has grown by 25% in recent years. People in other countries are also doing aquatic exercise more frequently.
Aquatic exercise has many benefits. First of all, it feels easier than exercising on land. Why? You weigh about 90% less in the pool. It is also better for your knees than running or walking.
Aquatic exercise feels easy, but you still burn calories(卡). Water is 1,000 times thicker and heavier than air. In the same amount of time, you can burn more calories in the pool than in the gym. That’s because it takes more energy to move in the water.
But what if you are scared of the water? No problem! There is nothing to worry about. Aquatic exercise is safe and easy to learn. It doesn’t require any special skills. For most kinds of aquatic exercise, you don’t even need to know how to swim.
In fact, most people say they feel more relaxed in the water. They stop thinking about the things that make them anxious. The cool and quiet environment makes them exercise more.
Aquatic exercise is suitable for everyone. You can do it at any age. It can even help people who have been hurt in accidents. With aquatic exercise, they can move in ways they can’t on land. For example, some people who can’t walk can walk and even run in the water.
So are you looking for a fun new way to improve your health? Why not try? Join the millions of people who are burning calories while keeping cool in the pool.
What is the passage mainly about?
________________________________________________________________________________________________.
答案:What aquatic exercise is and its benefits.
People always have different feelings. Among them is shyness. It means feeling frightened when
37
you are around other people. Some children were born shy. Some become very shy later because of life experience. In fact, everyone gets a little shy sometimes. It depends on how shy you are. If shyness doesn’t stop you from doing something you want to do, being shy isn’t a big problem.
According to scientists, shyness generally begins during childhood. Most of time, shyness is caused by people’s worry about what other people think of them,so shy people often find it very difficult to meet new people. This fear has bad effects on their work life, social life and love life. The following suggestions may be helpful for shy people.
Find ways to relax when you go out .When you are old enough, consider drinking a glass of wine before heading out for the night. Talk with your friend or family member to help yourself calm down (平静).
Look best when you go out. Wear something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Listen carefully when people speak. Shy people sometimes think that meeting new people means having to do a lot of talking. You can ask simple questions and then listen to the answers. People love to feel like other people are listening to them and sharing their point of view.
Build your confidence and change your attitude towards meeting new people instead of worrying about how they will think of you, and think about what are good points you hope to find in the new person you will meet.
Try these suggestions if you do feel very shy. Hopefully you can enjoy your life better.
What is the passage mainly about?
________________________________________________________________________________________________.
答案:What shyness is and how to deal with it.

In April 2007, a 16-year-old boy named Charlie McDonnell was bored, so he used his laptop and webcam to make his first video, and posted it on YouTube under the name Charlieissocoollike. Two days after that, he had 150 subscribers(关注), so he decided to make more videos. He soon became quite popular in the UK.
A few months later, Oprah Winfrey, the famous American TV host, showed one of his videos called How to be English on her programme. In this video, Charlie wears a suit and tie and talks in a funny accent. He shows viewers how to make a cup of tea. The video made Charlie suddenly famous in the United States too. To say thank you to all his fans, he made a video called Challenge Charlie. In this video he asked people to suggest funny or difficult things for him to do in his videos. Challenges included drinking tomato ketchup, wearing all of his clothes at once and painting himself purple!
Charlie is also a singer and songwriter. His most popular videos are of him singing and playing the ukelele. In Duet with Myself, he uses special effects to sing a duet with himself about what a boring person he is. This has now been watched over 7 million times! Charlie met Alex Day through YouTube and they started a band together. They have made two CDs and performed several concerts.

Bashert is a gentle, golden dog. In her mind, there is no human problem so big she can't lick(舔) better. When her owner is sad, she licks him to make him happy. When her owner feels upset, she licks him again to encourage him.
"When I go to camp, I miss Bashert a lot," Bashert's owner Aaron Richards, a 14-year-old boy in the US, told the New York Times.
Animals like Bashert play an important part in people's lives. Whether it is a dog, a cat or a goldfish, people always enjoy their companionship(陪伴). But do you know that people also love animals for other reasons?
When staying with animals, people can relax. Compared to the human world, the animal world seems to be simpler. People don't need to worry about being judged by words or behaviors. For children, they can forget grades and class performance. What they feel is warmth and acceptance without any conditions.
Animals, especially pets, also teach people to learn responsibility. Besides feeding and cleaning them, you also need to care for them. When they are sick, take them to an animal hospital. When they feel lonely, just play with them for a while. When they get old, you should spend time with them and let them know that you will always love them. Such a caring heart also tells you to treat people in a nice way. Then, you will find yourself a much beloved person.
What is the passage mainly about?
_________________________________________________________________________.
答案:How animals comfort people and why people love animals.

Why is Denmark the “kingdom of fairy tales”? Because it was the home of famous writer Hans Christian Andersen. But there might be other reasons, says a new study.
Denmark is the happiest country in the world, according to the 2013 World Happiness Report by the United Nations (UN). The report ranks(排列)156 countries and regions (地区). All the top five happiest countries are from Europe, and three of them are fromScandinavia.
What makes people there happy? The UN considered several reasons.
Money is one. We are happy if we have money to cover our necessities. But extra (额外的) money cannot bring us more happiness. People in Northern Europe know this. From cars to mobile phones, from clothes to buildings, their designs are quite simple. Luxury (奢华) is not there.
Another reason is health. Nordic (北欧的) people have a healthy diet. They love fresh food. “There is not a big fast-food culture and no ready meals. We sit down with our families to eat our meals,” said Trina Hahnemann, a Danish cook.
A harmonious (和谐的) social life also makes us happy, according to the UN report. How about Nordic people? They live in harmony not only with people around, but also with nature. Night life is not popular in Scandinavia. People go home after work for some quality(高品质的) time with family members. Many families have a backyard. Father and child spend hours there each week, planting flowers and building swings.

Max's Good Habit
Max reads more than anyone he knows. He loves to read during all of his free time. His friends laugh at him because he would rather read than play video games, but his parents and his teachers are proud of him. They say reading is important, and it will help him learn about the world around him They also tell him it is a good habit to read on a regular basis.
One day Max was reading a magazine article about volcanoes. He told his friends all about volcanoes and what causes them to erupt(爆发).The very next week, his class was told to do a science project. It was to create a poster board with information about volcanoes and to build a volcano model. Guess who everyone wanted in their project group? Max's friends weren't laughing at him anymore. Max ended up being in a group with Liz, Anna and Josh.
Max made copies of the magazine article about volcanoes so his project partners could read about them too. They also went to the library to look for more information about volcanoes.
The group met at Anna's house that night to organize the information. They all asked Max what he thought was most important. Then they discussed and decided on the information they wanted to put on the poster board.
The next night they met at Josh's house to build their volcano. They used cardboard and modeling clay(黏土). First they made a volcano shape with the cardboard, and then they covered the shape in brown clay. They also fixed red clay to the top of the volcano to make it look like it was erupting.
The volcano looked great. Max, Liz, Anna and Josh were very proud of their hard work. When they teamed in their project, their teacher was proud, too. Thanks to Max's good habit, they got an A+ on both parts of the project.
What do you learn from this story?(首段和尾段)

Clowning Around
It’s almost time for the summer holidays. The thought of sunshine, no school or homework and traveling around are in everyone’s mind. However, a lot of teenagers stay at home during the summer holidays. If you don’t have any plans this summer and want to learn something cool and fun, why don’t you try a circus(杂技)skill? There are plenty of skills that are easy to learn with a bit of practice.
37
Hula hooping is a good choice because it s a fun way to keep fit. Once you’ve learned how to keep the hoop moving around your waist, you can try around your arms, legs and even neck!
Or how about juggling? This is a skill that takes a little bit of practice regularly. If you master the basics, there are lots of simple tricks that look exciting. Most juggling beginners start with three soft balls. You can throw and catch them so that one is always in the air and the others in your hands. After perfecting this skill, you can add more balls. Some people can juggle up to ten balls.
To people who don t like the sound of hula hooping, perhaps diabolo is more suitable. This looks like two plastic cones(圆锥体)joined together at the tips placed on a piece of string held by the player. You can spin, throw and catch the diabolo to show off some interesting but simple tricks.
All of these are exciting to try. Most of the equipment(装备)can be found in toy shops or some websites on the Internet. Most cities will have a circus club for teenagers to try out the different tricks and they even offer workshops to teach the skills properly and safely. Once you find he skill for you, I m sure you’ll be practicing all summer long, eager to impress your classmates when September comes around again.
What does the passage mainly talk about?(首段)

答案:Tricks Circus skills for teenagers. / Activities for teenagers to learn circus skills (during summer holidays).

Our views towards life change over the time. When I was around five years old, I was in a car accident. At that time, I did not realize the seriousness of it and how lucky I was to still be alive. As I look back to think what happened on that night, I now realize how lucky my family members and I were to not have gotten serious injuries.
The clay of the accident started out great. My brother, Troy and I had spent the night before at JoAnn's house, with Heather, and JoAnn's husband Gary. The next day we spent playing inside the house, because it was cold, windy and rainy outside. At night, JoAnn told us we were going out and that where we were going was a surprise. The five of us climbed into an old car, and we set off for our surprise. It was still cold, windy, and raining cats and dogs outside when we left. Troy, Heather and 1 sat in the backseat together happily. The next thing I knew was that everything was chaos (混乱)! The road was so slick (滑的)that the car lost control. Glass was flying everywhere, and it sounded like there was noise all around us. Then it was totally quiet, except for the sound of the rain and wind. Troy, Healthier and I were all lying on top of one another. The three of us were crying, not knowing what had happened. JoAnn and Gary were trying to calm (使平静)us down and kept asking us if we were all right. Luckily, none of us was injured, just a few cuts. After that I only remember sitting there in the cold, dark night waiting for Gary to get back with people to help us. We never got to the surprise that night. Bui at least we were able to go home in one piece.
After my brother and I got home that night, I remember my parents let us stay up as long as we wanted to. I guess my parents were realizing just how close they came to losing us that night. As I
37
think of the tragedy (悲剧)that could have happened on that night, I realize how precious (宝贵)life is. I treasure my family and friends, and hope that we will share a loving, caring, and rewarding lifetime together. Things seldom go the way I plan them to, but I take a deep breath, try to laugh, and make the best of it.
What is the passage mainly about?

答案:It is mainly about a car accident and the writer’s new views towards life.

Warren Buffett is one of the richest people in the world. Mike flint was Buffett’s pilot for ten years. During a trip, Buffett said to Flint, “You must have dreams greater than flying me around to where I need to go.” The pilot said he did have bigger dreams. And then Buffett took him through a three-step process for prioritizing(优化), to decide which things are the most important and what to start with.
First, Buffett asked Flint to write down a list of twenty-five career goals. Flint took some time and wrote them down. Second, Buffett asked Flint to do some soul-searching and circle the five highest-priority goals on the list. Again, Flint took some time, made his way through the list and eventually decided on his five most important goals.
At this point, Buffett asked, “but what about these other 20 things on your list you didn’t circle? What is your plan for completing those?” Flint replied confidently, “Well the five highest-priority goals are the most important but the other twenty come in at a close second. So I’ll work on those twenty as well as I’m getting through my five highest-priority goals.” To Flint’s surprise, Buffett said, “No. You’ve got it wrong. The third step is to take a good hard look at the 20 goals. You should avoid them at all costs. They eat away time and energy, taking your eye from the goals than matter more.”
It is a simple process but not always an easy one. We are in a world where there’s more competition for your focus(专注) than ever before. We have to guard it with our life. Without focus, without staying true to our priorities, we will not get done other things we try to fit in and get done what’s most important to ourselves.
Every behavior has a cost. But time and energy are limited. Successful people prioritize their most important goals and avoid things but take up time, energy and space that could be put toward better behavior or more important tasks.
Once you’ve picked a goal, work towards it while ignoring(忽视) the things that will compete for your attention.

Could getting a good night’s sleep avoid putting on weight for children?
According to a new study, putting preschoolers in bed by 8 P.M.
37
Could reduce their chances of becoming overweight or obese (肥胖) later in life by half. Preschoolers are children around the age of 4 or 5.
The researchers from Ohio State University wrote their findings in the Journal of Pediatrics. They have found that young children who go to bed after 9 P.M. are twice as likely to be obese later in life. The lead author of the study is Sarah Anderson. She says that it’s very important for parents to create a bedtime routine for their children.
How was the research conducted? Researchers chose 977 children for it. These children are part of a larger project called the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. The project follows healthy babies born in 1991 in ten U.S.cities. In order to have a clearer picture of the results, researchers then divided the children into three groups:
l those who went to bed by 8 P.M. or earlier
l those who went to bed between 8 P.M. and 9 P.M.
l those whose bedtimes were after 9 P.M.
When these children turned 15 years old, the researchers looked at the results of the study. Of those with the earliest bedtimes, only one out of ten was obese. Of those who went to bed between 8 and 9 at night. 16 percent of the children became obese. And out of those with the latest bedtimes, 23 percent of the children became obese.
“Having a usual bedtime routine can lower children’s risk of becoming overweight. Besides, as usual, early bedtime is also likely to have positive effects on behavior and social development,” said Professor Anderson.
