Check out our tsunami(海啸)facts and learn some interesting information related to these great walls of water that can cause so much destruction.Find out what causes tsunamis and read about some notable recent examples of tsunamis that have occurred around the globe.
Tsunamis are huge waves of water that are usually caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
As a tsunami approaches the shore, water may move back from the coast. If it is shallow enough, the water may be pulled back hundreds of metres. If you are in the area, observing this is a good indication that a tsunami is on the way.
Regions in tsunami danger zones often have warning systems in place to give people as much time to evacuate(撤离)as possible.
When tsunamis hit shallow water(often near the coast),they slow down but increase in height.
An earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia in December 2004 caused a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people in 14 countries.
In March 2011,the Tohoku earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan caused a tsunami that was a major factor in the death of over 15,000 people.
The tsunami waves created by the Tohoku earthquake reached heights of over 40 metres(131 feet)in mine areas, wiping out coastal towns and causing a number of nuclear accidents.
The Japanese word“tsunami”literally means“harbour wave”.
Tsunamis are sometimes referred to as tidal waves but this term has fallen out of favour because tsunamis are not related to tides.

A.An earthquake takes place.
B.The water near the shore is pulled back.

A.the tsunami caused by the earthquake
B.the lack of warning systems

A.The word“tsunami”is from British English.
B.The term“tidal wave”is used more often than“tsunami”.
C.More people died in Indonesia tsunami than in Tohoku tsunami.
D.Some nuclear accidents happened after Indonesia tsunami.
24.The passage is developed mainly by________.

When I woke up, I made myself breakfast, sat and listened to the traffic. Some of my friends ask me how I can stand living somewhere so noisy. It’s true that there’s always some kind of noise in my neighborhood, but to me, these are the sounds of life.
It was Saturday morning, so I decided to go to the park. The taxi is the fastest way to go but I took the bus instead.
When you ride the bus, you get to see so much more of the city. It can be kind of loud on the bus, with some people talking on their phones, others chatting with their friends, and others playing music. It’s just like the traffic’s sounds, though the noise on the bus represents people working, relaxing and living.
Once I got to the park, I picked a bench over near the play area where kids play while their parents sit nearby. I can see and hear almost everything from there. People-watching is one of my favorite things to do. However, I like listening even better. The only problem is that there’s so much to see and hear in the park!
Usually, I like to close my eyes. That way, I can pay more attention to the sounds and not get distracted by what I see. With my eyes closed, I could pick out parts of two old men’s conversation. One of them was telling the other about something his grandson said. I couldn’t hear the rest, but it must have been hilarious because his friend’s laugh was so loud.
When I’m old, I hope that I too will have a friend who will sit in the park with me, and who will enjoy listening to the sounds of the city as much as I do.
28. Some of the author’s friends think“the sounds of life”are very_____.
A. magical B. unique C. unpleasant D. interesting

30. The author closed his eyes in order to________.
A. avoid talking with the two old men B. enjoy the sounds of life
C. hide himself from view D. have a good rest
31. The underlined word“hilarious”in Paragraph 5 probably means“________”.
A. quite popular B. truly different C. extremely funny D. rather strange

The Chinese saying goes: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. This is what the Seattle-based FareStart does. Not only does the charity provide meals for the homeless but it also teaches them cooking skills that prepare them for jobs in food service.
13.2% of people in Seattle live below the poverty line. Since its beginning in 1999, FareStart has grown steadily, graduating 110 people from its adult cooking training program in 2013, 90% of whom went on to well-paid employment within 90 days of graduation. 88% of those employees still held their positions six months later.
Students at FareStart begin their training with simple tasks like reading recipes and planning menus. Many also receive housing. In return, they are required to work. Starting with assisting in the kitchen preparing meals for people in shelters, the trainees move their way up the ranks, ending up in the kitchen of the FareStart restaurant in downtown Seattle.
The combination of practical skill-training with other support services allows successful graduates like Jayna, a former nurse who lost her license due to drug and alcohol abuse, to get on in life. Since graduating from FareStart, she has worked in a small house at Yellowstone National Park. “I could not have put myself back together again,”she said.“FareStart did that for me.”
Kevin, who graduated from FareStart in April 2012, is another success story. Previously homeless, he found that having to show up at the same place every day kept him on track. Upon leaving FareStart, Kevin began setting goals for his future and seeing them through — including holding down his current job for almost a year.
Going forward, FareStart plans to shift more focus to women, particularly women with children, who sadly make up an increasing percentage of the local homeless population. The organization also aims to double its student intake when it makes a gradual move to a bigger space in Seattle’s Pacific Tower.
32. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show________.
A. cooking is becoming popular in Seattle
B. FareStart is helpful in creating employment
C. the growing population of Seattle
D. the rapid growth of unemployment
33. Both Jayna and Kevin_________.
A. worked at Yellowstone National Park
B. became homeless due to alcohol abuse
C. must be grateful to FareStart
D. lost their jobs for a year
34. We can learn from the text that FareStart will_______.
A. help people in Seattle get out of poverty within 5 years
B. make its restaurant the biggest one in Seattle
C. give more attention to homeless women
D. add more courses to meet the need of its students
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A better way to feed the hungry B.A new land found for housing
C. Success stories in Seattle D. Poverty programs in Seattle

39 As part of a healthy diet, eat more fruits and vegetables each day. Vitamins(维生素) C and E help protect eyesight and promote eye health.
Practice safe wear and care of contact lenses(隐形眼镜). Many Americans use contact lenses to improve their eyesight. 附听力材料录音原文
Text 1
M: I need to use the restroom, but the door is locked. No one is in there because I already knocked on the door. Can you give me the key?
W: Well, the restroom is for customers only. You’ll need to buy something before I can give it to you.
Text 2
M: When does the play start? My ticket says 7:30 p.m.
W: Well, that’s when it officially starts. They actually check tickets fifteen minutes earlier. And if you’re not seated when the lights go down five minutes before that, they won’t let you in.
Text 3
W: I play basketball three times a week. What’s your favorite sport, Patrick?
M: I played baseball as a young kid, but I haven’t picked up a bat in years. I’m much more into tennis these days.
Text 4
M: I wish Uncle Jim wouldn’t talk with his mouth full of food.
W: Well, I love his jokes and that makes up for his lack of manners.
Text 5
W: How much did you pay for this new fridge?
M: Oh, it was a little over a thousand dollars, plus tax. It was much more expensive than our washing machine, but not nearly as much as our bed!
Text 6
W: I can’t believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Who usually does the cooking in your family?
M: My mother and my two aunts don’t let anyone else do anything except for the salad and the drinks. That includes all the sauces, desserts, and place settings.
W: Wow. It sounds like they take Turkey Day pretty seriously.
M: Listen, if Thanksgiving were an Olympic sport, they would be kicked out for winning too many gold medals! What about you?
W: Well, my parents and I do everything together. It’s better than one person trying to do too much.
Text 7
W: Oh, there is nothing better than a nice cold glass of ice water on a hot day.
M: You know, cold water always gives me stomachaches.
W: Really? I’ve never had that problem. I’ve been drinking ice water since I was little.
M: Hmm. When I was a small boy, my grandmother never let my mom give me anything other than warm water.W: Even in the summer?
M: Yes. Every once in a while, my dad would take me to get some ice cream, but my grandmother was never happy about that. I think it was the sugar that she didn’t like…
Text 8
M: Is it me, or is it really hard to understand this speaker?
W: You’re right. It’s not that he has an accent like some of the other speakers from another country. It’s just that
he is speaking too softly. Do you think it would be rude to ask him to turn his microphone up a little bit?
M: I don’t think he’s wearing one. Either that or he’s turned it off.
W: That’s crazy. There must be four hundred people here.
M: This part of the conference has turned into such a waste of time. Maybe we should leave and try to find another lecture.
W: I can’t do that. I come here specifically to hear this guy’s speech. I think I’ll just go up to him at the end of the speech and try to ask him some questions.
M: Good idea. Would you mind if I followed you up there? It might be the only way to get anything out of thishour.
W: No problem.
Text 9
W: Excuse me. Can you tell me where I can find dresses for teenagers?
M: Yes, they’re on the left, next to the purses. But don’t you think you should look for something, uh…a bit more mature?
W: Oh, no…it’s not for me. I’m looking for a present for my niece. She’s turning 16 next week, and she’s having
a big party.
M: Oh, I remember when my daughter was that age. She’s about to graduate college now.
W: How wonderful! Yeah, Elizabeth is looking at schools right now. We’ll probably take her on a tour of the East
Coast colleges sometime in the fall. She lives with my brother and his wife in Oregon.
M: There are some schools there that offer good programs, but they probably don’t get the scenery like we do here
on the East Coast. I’ve always liked seeing the seasons change. I went to the University of Pennsylvania. What about you?
W: I went to Brown University.
M: Great! So where does your niece want to go to school?
W: Oh, I think Harvard, Yale, and the University of Chicago are her top three choices.
M: Well, those are all fantastic schools with a long history, but I think it’s a good idea to take her to see all those places up close and in person. You can’t get a sense of a college until you set foot on campus.
W: I couldn’t agree more! Well, I’d better get back to my shopping!
