Text 1
M: I’m thinking of planting roses or apple trees in the backyard. Or maybe we can plant some vegetables!
W: What about just some grass? Then the kids will have space to play.
Text 2
W: Oh no! We just missed the bus! Can we still get to the theater by 7:45 to pick up the tickets?
M: We have time. It’s only 6:15. The next buswill come in 15 minutes. If we hurry, we can still get some snacks to bring into the show.
Text 3
W: What are you doing this weekend? You should come to my volleyball game on Saturday.
M: I wish I could, but my cousin is coming to town to visit. I’m taking her downtown to a concert and a nice restaurant.
Text 4
W: Paul, you’re so wet! What happened?
M: I forgot my rain jacket, and it started storming while I was at school! I had parked my car far from the class building, so I got completely wet walking back to it.
Text 5
M: I’m going to hike around the lake tomorrow morning. I need some exercise! Would you like to join me?
W: Great idea! I haven’t been to the lake for three months, and it will be nice to get outside before it starts raining next week.
Text 6
W: I’d like to try something new. I’ve had long hair since I was 10 years old. Maybe it’s time to cut it short.
M: Sure. I think a short cut would really make you look better. If you’re interested in a big change, we can also try a new color.
W: Like what?Black?
M: Well, you would look fantastic with blonde hair! Imagine walking into the office or your next party with a new look.
W: I’ve never colored my hair before! I’d be too worried that it wouldn’t look right. Besides, I like my brown hair.
Text 7
M: Julie, I know I said I’d take the kids to the movies on Friday night, but I forgot I have an evening meeting then.
W: Are you serious, Mike? This is really late notice! I have plans to meet Whitney for dinner!
M: I’m sorry. Can’t you get together with Whitney on Saturday?
W: She’s only in town one night, and her flight is on Saturday morning. And I haven’t seen Whitney for three years.
M: Well, I guess we need a babysitter this Friday night. Or maybe you can invite Whitney over here. I’m sure she’d love to see the kids.
W: Yeah, that’s a good idea. I’ll give a ring to Whitney tonight.
Text 8
W: How much do these pants cost? I need to buy some for my son. He’s starting the new school year soon. I also need to get him some sweaters, shirts, socks, and shoes.
M: Those black pants are $40. These blue ones over here cost $15 less than the black ones. We have many good sweaters and shirts, too. These sweaters are very thick for winter. They cost $50 each, but they’re worth the money! They’ll last for a long time. We also have many types of shirts.
W: How much are the shirts? Do you have any sales?
M: Yes. The regular price is $30, but you can buy them with 30% off today. Now I’ll show you the shoes!
Text 9
W: I have an early meeting at work tomorrow morning, so I need to make breakfast earlier than I usually do.Do you
want to get up early to have breakfast with me?
M: Okay. I’ll get up early with you and go to the library before class. I can study more for my exams. I have four exams next week, so I need to study as much as I can! I’m anxious about them.
W: I’m sure you’ll do well! When does the school close for the winter holiday?
M: We finish in two weeks. I’m happy that the semester is almost over. I’ve had a difficult time since the fall. My classes were very challenging.
W: I know. It’ll be good to relax with family. Remember, we went to visit your aunt’s family for your summer holiday, so I think we should get to stay with your grandparents this Christmas in three weeks. I talked to them last week, and they’re excited to see us.
M: Great!

Good morning, and welcome to Alaska Airlines Flight 274 to San Diego. Some of you will be staying with us as we continue on to Las Vegas. We will be taking off from Vancouver shortly, with a flight time of three hours. That’s shorter than the three and a half hours we were expecting, thanks to totally clear skies and some winds behind us. We’ll be landing on San Diego at 11:40a.m. If you have a window seat on the left side of the airplane, you’ll get to enjoy some amazing views of Mount Rainier, Mount Hood, and Mount Shasta along the way. Those of you on the right side will get to look at the Pacific Ocean as we’re coming near to San Diego. This flight will have two drink services and one snack service. Please see the menu in the seat pocket in front of you for juice, sodas, tea, and snacks. We hope you enjoy the food and flight.
