Zinc锌 Can Cut Colds Short
Zinc isn't the cure for the common cold, but increasing evidence indicates it can be a big help. An analysis of three randomly controlled trials found that 70 per cent of patients who had taken zinc acetate lozenges(醋酸锌含片)(80 to 92 mg per day)within 24 hours of noticing cold symptoms had recovered on the fifth day, compared with 27 per cent of patients who had received a placebo. While that dosage(安慰剂) is higher than the daily recommended amount, no serious side effects were observed. Be sure your zinc lozenge doesn't also contain citric acid(柠檬酸),which can make it less effective.
Driving Can Lower Your IQ
In a recent study of approximately 500,000 people between ages 37 and 73, researchers found a noticeable drop-off in brainpower, as measured by intelligence and memory tests, among those who drove for more than two hours each day. The study also found that the more time participants spent watching TV, which, like driving, fails to exercise either the body or the brain, the worse their test scores. If you must drive long distances to work, consider adding a mentally stimulating activity to your journey work, such as listening to language lessons.

Calcium and vitamin D have long been known to work together to build strong bones. Now scientists have discovered that they may also play a role in preventing early menopause, which is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis(骨质疏松症), heart disease and other health issues. In a study of 116,430 premenopausal women, those who got the most calcium and vitamin D from food-especially dairy-had the lowest risk of early menopause. Supplements did not have any beneficial effect, perhaps because they lack the other vitamins, fats and hormones found in dairy.

I work for a big store and today a group of soldiers came into the store on their way to Bridgeport. A customer came to me and said that she wanted to pay for all that the soldiers wanted to buy. All of them! She asked how it could be done so that she could be anonymous (匿名的).
I told her that she could buy a gift card and that I would open up a register and just ring all of them up on one ticket. She agreed and wondered how much of a card to buy, $500 or $600. Looking around and seeing that they were just buying sandwiches and drinks, I thought that was too much. She ended up purchasing one for $300 and said if there was anything left, she would come back in at a later date to pick it up.
I opened a register and announced for all soldiers to come through check stand No. 1. The customer quickly left the store. As the young men and women began to come through with their purchases, they all had their wallets out and I got to tell them that all their purchases had been paid for! I let them know where the generosity came from and they all said thank you and addressed me as, Sir.
As it turned out, that was only a small portion of the military that was about to enter our store. They just kept coming and coming. Other members of our community saw what was going on and that the tab (待付账单)had easily surpassed (超过)the $300 and began handing me money to cover the rest. The total tab ended up well over double what the amazing customer started with her contribution. However, after accepting the rest of the funds from the other generous donations, there was still over $230 left.
I was deeply moved by people’ s love and support for those who serve our country.

The mass death of flying foxes in extreme heat in North Queensland last month underlines the importance of University of Queensland wildlife research released today. The UQ research account for how various species have responded to major climate events.
A study led by UQ School of Earth and Environmental Science researcher Dr. Sean Maxwell has spent more than 70 years quantifying the responses of various species.
“The growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts and floods is causing unpredictable and immediate changes to ecosystems and blocking existing management efforts,” Dr. Maxwell said. “Some of the negative responses we found were quite concerning, including more than 100 cases of dramatic population declines and 31 cases of local population extinction following an extreme event.”
“Populations of critically endangered bird species in Hawaii have disappeared due to droughts, leaving none of its kind, and populations of lizard species have been wiped out due to hurricanes in the Bahamas.”
Hurricanes were the most common extreme event for birds, fish, plants and reptiles, while mammals and amphibians were most responsive to drought events, with droughts leading to 12 cases of major population decline in mammals. Droughts also led to 13 cases of breeding declines in bird populations and 12 cases of changes in the formation of invertebrate(无脊椎动物)communities.
UQ Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science director Professor James Watson said the detailed information would help inform ecosystem management. “The research clearly shows species will respond, often negatively, to extreme events,” Professor Watson said. “As climate change continues to ensure extreme climate and weather events are more and more common, we now need to act to ensure species have the best chance to survive. Wherever possible, high quality and undamaged habitat areas should be preserved, as these are the places where species are most resilient(易恢复的) to increasing exposure to extreme events.”
28. How was the UQ research conducted?
A. By observing extreme weather events.
B. By recording reactions of animals to extreme climate.
C. By protecting the endangered species.
D. By analyzing the reason why mass animal death happened.
29. What does the underlined word “intensity” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. fierceness B. weakness C. decrease D. relevance
30. Which of the following sentences is true about extreme weather events?
A. Droughts caused 13 cases of distinction in bird populations.
B. Hurricanes wiped out populations of mammals.
C. Birds and mammals are most responsive to hurricanes.
D. Droughts caused 12 cases of population decline in mammals.
31. What can we infer from Professor Watson’s words?
A. Species often show negative responses to extreme events.
B. The existing management ways for wildlife protection are limited.
C. Complete and undamaged habitats are of great importance to species’ survival.
D. Different methods should be adopted to ensure the survival of different species.
D
Brynn Putnam believes our interest in our appearance is creating the next big trend in fitness. “There’s something really magical about seeing yourself in the mirror and seeing yourself working hard,” said Putnam.
She calls her invention MIRROR. When it’s off, that’s all that it is. But turn it on and the trainers are looking at you — with instructive exercises live or on demand (点播) at home. “Is it the same rush you get when you are actually in a gym?”CBS News’ Michelle Miller asked. “It’s almost like even more of a rush. We are going to have thousands of people that appear on that screen,” said Kailee Combs, MIRROR’s Vice President of Fitness.
“The idea that we can reach so many people with this MIRROR makes it really exciting.” MIRROR was test-marketed in 100 homes, connecting phones to an app that learned the goals, injuries and preferences of users. Classes include strength training, yoga, and so on. It sells for $1,495 with a $39 monthly membership that provides unlimited classes, which are all filmed at MIRROR’s New York City office. What will make MIRROR more attractive to people is the upcoming choice to use a camera and microphone for one-on-one training.
When asked how she could make the product hack-proof, Putnam said, “MIRROR comes with a physical camera cap and you need to have your phone with your password in front of your MIRROR and then there is a personal ID number pairing process so we can make sure you are the one using your MIRROR.”
Putnam doesn’t expect customers to cancel their gym memberships and she just makes sure their games are the most modern. “We spend so much time looking in the mirror expressing dissatisfaction with our appearance. This is a great chance to look in the mirror and give yourself a high five,” she said.
32. What is MIRROR mainly used for?
A. Pushing users to work harder.
B. Helping users exercise at home.
C. Helping users dress up fashionably.
D. Connecting users with more people.
33. What is MIRROR’s selling point in the future?
A. The personal training it will provide.
B. The different uses it will offer.
C. Its reasonable price.
D. Its unlimited classes.
34. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “hackproof” in Paragraph4?
A. Work normally. B. Not used by others.

More than the challenge of fitting into a new culture, there are many benefits that a student can get with an exchange program. These benefits include:
Diverse academic opportunities. It’s not actually the travel that students would love to study abroad. 36 Instead,it will be an offering of diverse opportunities for the student. For example, the student will be able to experience the differences of teaching methods, educational formats and academic program offerings.
37 Studying in another country opens the student to different surroundings, which makes the student know about the country’s customs, people and regions. Knowing other culture also teaches the student how to be open-minded.
Personality development. 38 Thus, the student needs to make decisions on his or her own and suffer the consequences or enjoy the fruits of that decision. With this, the student is taught how real life is, what it means to be responsible, and how being resourceful can help in his or her survival. It’s no wonder that most students who returned after the exchange program were seen with significant improvement on their personal development. 39
So, why not let your child have the benefits of a student exchange program?
