We like people who look like us, because they tend to have personalities similar to ours. And, a new study suggests, the longer we are with someone, the more similarities in appearance grow.
Researchers set out to study why couples often tend to look like one another. They asked 11 male and 11 female participants to judge the age, attractiveness and personality of 160 real-life married couples. Photographs of husbands and wives were viewed separately, so the participants didn’t know who was married to whom.
The test’s participants rated men and women who were actual couples as looking alike and having similar personalities. Also, the longer the couples had been together, the greater the similarities. The researchers guess that the sharing of experiences might affect how couples look.
“The idea that there is a connection between appearance and personality might seem strange at first, but there could be biological reasons for a link.” said the study member Tony Little from the University of Liverpool in England.
“The face displays our emotions and over time emotional expressions may become written in the face.” Little told live science. For example, someone who smiles a lot may develop lines and muscles that are suggestive of someone who is happy.
Other studies have shown that partners who are genetically similar to each other tend to have happier marriage.
The new study indicates that people have genetically similar to each tend to have happier marriage.
The new study indicates that people have different features when using facial appearance to make decisions about someone’s personality, and that the particular cues(暗示)focused on change from face to face. What is vital to the decision, however, are eyes and smiles.
“Smiles are important social cues that may tell us whether or not someone is friendly, and eyes are also a traditional focus of attention, “Little said.
Overall face shape can be important too. “For example, the combination of large chins and dominant brow ridges(脊)can create an impression of disagreeableness and being unwilling to cooperate. ” Little said.

C. They learn from each other in their daily life.
D. They’re closely connected with each other biologically.
23. Which part of a person’s face can help you judge whether he/she is paying attention to you?

Nowadays more and people are too busy with work to relax themselves. We have no time to tell a bedtime story to our children, or enjoy a nice dinner with our family, or take a break to think about how we live the precious life, or even meet friends. All we notice is that the distinctions that used to guide and steady us-between Sunday and Monday, public and private, here and there-are gone. We have more
9
ways to communicate, but less and less to say, partly because we’re so busy communicating.
Maybe that’s why more and more people I know, even if they have no religious belief, seem to be turning to yoga, or meditation, or tai chi .Some friends of mine try to go on long walks every Sunday, or to “forget” their cellphones at home. A series of tests in recent years has shown that their brains become both calmer and sharper after spending time in quiet rural settings.
In my own case, I often turn to extreme measures to try to keep my sanity and ensure that I have time to do nothing at all. I’ve not yet used a cellphone and I’ve never tweeted Facebook. I tried not to go online till my day’s writing was finished, and I moved from Manhattan to rural Japan.
None of this is a matter of principle or asceticism(苦行主义):It’s just pure selfishness. Nothing makes me feel better-- calmer, clearer and happier-- than being in one place, absorbed in a book, a conversation, or a piece of music. It’s actually something deeper than mere happiness: It’s joy, which the monk David Steindl-Rast describes as “that kind of happiness that doesn’t depend on what happens”.That is the highest of the highest we have been longing for-The joy of quiet.
24. Why does the writer sometimes do nothing at all?
A. He is out of work. B. Whatever he does makes no sense.

25. What does the writer mean when using the word “forget “in the second paragraph?
A. Trapped in busy work, they are really forgetful.
B. They think the cellphone is not a suitable means of communication.
C. They leave their cellphones at home on purpose.
D. They hate modern techniques such as the cellphone.
26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The writer is unwilling to help others since he is selfish.
B. Slowing down to find and space to think and enjoy ourselves is urgent.
C. It is better to go back to the ancient times since we are so busy now.
D. We have more to say because we have more ways to communicate.
27. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Enjoying quiet time is very important.
B. We can do some sports such as yoga to relax.
C. To feel better, we should do nothing at all.
D. The more we communicate, the better we will feel.
C
An idea that started in Seattle’s public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.
In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起) the “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book” project in 1998. her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.
In Chicago, the mayor (市长) appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the “One Book, One Chicago” program. As a result, reading clubs and neighborhood groups sprang up around the cit. across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character.
The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent
9
the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity (一致) can be achieved. Or it may show that New Yorkers missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than into discussion about a book itself.
Ultimately, as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process, or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.
28. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?
A. To invite authors to guide readers.
B. To encourage people to read and share.
C. To involve people in community service.
D. To promote the friendship between cities.
29. According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?
A. In large communities with little sense of unity.
B. In large cities where libraries are far from home.
C. In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.
D. In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.
30. The underlined words “shared a word” in Paragraph 5 probably mean _______.
A. exchange ideas with each other B. discussed the meaning of a word
C. gained life experience D. used the same language
31. According to Nancy, the degree of success of the project is judged by _______.
A. the careful selection of a proper book
B. the growing popularity of the writers
C. the number of people who benefit from reading
D. the number of books that each person reads
D
Americans are worried about new technology. They are concerned that machines, including robots, will take over work now done by humans. These findings come from a new report by the Pew Research Center in Washington D.C.
About 75 percent of Americans questioned by Pew believe automation will increase income inequality between the rich and the middle class and the poor. And 64 percent of people expect automation to be so common in America that people will face difficulty finding things to do with their lives.

Most Americans want the government to limit automation. For example, 87 perent support a requirement that all driverless vehicles have a human in the drive’s cab who can take control when needed. And 85 percent want to limit machines to mostly doing jobs that are dangerous or unhealthy for humans. And only 25 percent expect more jobs to come from automation, Pew said.
Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook, spoke last May to graduating seniors from Havard University in Massachusetts. His talk centered on the uncertain future facing young people.“Our generation will have to deal with tens of millions of jobs replaces by automation like self-driving cars and trucks, “Zuckerberg told the graduates.
Zuckerberg said young people will have to find projects that will bring both jobs and direct benefits to the people of the world. He said in his speech that 300,000 people worked to put a man on to the moon, and millions of people built the Hoover Dam as well as other great projects over the last 100 years.

Is "sorry" the hardest word? Not for the British man Michael Gove, 61 has apologized recently to his former French teacher 62 his bad behaviors in class. It took him 30 years to express regret. In a letter 63 (publish) in a magazine, Mr. Gove says: “It may be too late to say I'm sorry. But, as my mom told me, it's never too late to set the record straight.”
Researchers argue that people have too high expectations of the power of saying sorry. Some psychologists say in a study that 64 (receive) an apology isn't as 65 (help) as people think. Nevertheless, apologies might be an important social tool as they reaffirm the 66 (exist) of rules that need to be observed.

The man's apology might have been accepted by his old teacher but he might get 6 7 (he) into trouble.
According to the Daily Mail, Mr. Gove's mother didn't know her son was causing trouble at school and she 68 (say), “He would have been punished 69 I had known he was being so naughty.” Later, Gove said, “I can never express my apology to him face to face these days---it just goes through to his answering machine. The annual national reading survey shows people's reading habits has barely changed over the past several years. The survey says about 59 percents of the adults in China read books, with one adult, in average, reading 4-5 books a year. This means a large number of people don't read, and those who do so read only a few books a year.
An equally worrying fact is because that even students, teenagers in particular, seem to be avoiding books as they spend more time and energy watching videos.
There are many reasons that fewer people today read books. To begin with, given the fast-changing social atmosphere, many people today tend spend time on hobbies rather than books. In additional, many senior family members have become indifferent to reading, thereby (因此,从而) failed to cultivate (培养) the love for books among his children and grandchildren. The lack of public libraries, too, was responsible for the falling number of readers.

书面表达
Dear Tom,
How are you? Glad to tell you something about mobile payment in China.
Mobile payment is most popular in China. It has made people's daily life more and more convenient. Most of us are used to paying by scanning QR codes.
By mobile payment, we can pay easily wherever we go. You can buy breakfast on the street and pay by scanning with your smart phone. In the subway station, you scan with your smart phone to purchase your ticket. This is a glimpse into the life of most Chinese — allowing us to bid farewell to the wallet and bank cards. Mobile payment has greatly changed people's lives in China. It seems that China is really leading in some ways and is also sweeping other nations.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
LiHua
