There’s festive cheer on tap, with concerts, folk dancing and stalls selling wine or fruit brandy and traditional chimney cake outsides. New Year’s Eve is celebrated with fireworks over the Danube(多瑙河), and it’s worth booking one of the many river cruises(巡游)with dinner and DJs (free and open 24/7, but likely to be crowded).‎ A four-night trip with Travel Republic costs £449 for a family (2 adults with 1 child under 6), departing Stansted on 28 December with Ryanair, with B&B accommodation at the central Atrium Budapest Hotel.‎ For a slightly more cerebral(理智的)New Year’s Eve, Stockholm is a smart choice. The main celebration is at Skansen, Sweden’s oldest open-air museum. Enterainment starts at 8 p.m. with singing and dancing, and peaks with a recitation of the poem Ring Out. Evening tickets are £l4 for adults (children under 6 go free), or there are new day and evening combination tickets (£l6 adult/£5 child). On New Year’s Day, early birds can try an introduction to ice skating (8 a.m. daily, £139).‎ Book it Ryanair, Norwegian and SAS fly to Stockholm from several UK airports.‎ The land of fire and ice lives up to its name on New Year’s Eve, when about 90 bonfires(篝火)are lit across the country. Some bonfires are accompanied by Icelandic singing; most start about 8 p.m. and finish by 10 p.m., which can be a good time to see the northern lights. After the fires, everyone goes home to watch Áramótaskaup, a TV show that has been running on 31 December since 1966. But that doesn’t mean the party is over just before midnight, they all come back out to let off an astonishing amount of fireworks, with profits going to Icelandic Search and Rescue Association, which does life-saving work, and is run by volunteers and is a cause close to most Icelanders’ hearts.‎ Book it Wow Air and Wizz Air, easyJet and Icelandair fly to Reykjavik from several UK cities.‎ ‎51. One solution to this problem is to put the drugs inside a capsule, protecting them from the body-and the body from them-until they can be released at just the right spot. There are lots of ways to trigger (引发) this release, including changing temperature, acidity, and so on. But triggers can come with their own risks-burns, for example. Now, researchers in California have designed what could be a harmless trigger to date: shining near-infrared light (NIR, 近红外线) on the drug in the capsule.      The idea of using light to liberate the drug in the capsule isn't new. Researchers around the globe have developed polymers (聚合物) and other materials that begin to break down when they absorb either ultraviolet (UV, 紫外线) or visible light. But tissues also readily absorb UV and visible light, which means the drug release can be triggered only near the skin, where the light can reach the capsule. NIR light largely passes through tissues, so researchers have tried to use it as a trigger. But few compounds (化合物) absorb NIR well and go through chemical ‎ changes.‎ That changed last year when Adah Almutairi, a chemist at the University of California, San Diego, reported that she and her colleagues had designed a polymer that breaks down when it absorbs NIR light. Their polymer used a commercially available NIR-absorbing group called o-nitrobenzyl (ONB). When they catch the light, ONB groups fall off the polymer, leading to its breakdown. But ONB is only a so-so NIR absorber, and it could be poisonous to cells when it separates from the polymer.‎ So Almutairi and her colleagues reported creating a new material for capsules that's even better. This one consists of a long chain of compounds called cresol groups linked in a polymer. Cresol contains reactive(易反应的) components that make it highly unstable in its polymeric form, a feature Almutairi and her colleagues use to their advantage. After polymerizing the cresols, they cap each reactive component with a light-absorbing compound called Bhc. When the Bhcs absorb NIR light, the reactive groups are exposed and break the long polymer into two short chains. Shining additional light continuesthis breakdown, potentially releasing any drugs in the capsule. What's more, Almutairi says, Bhc is 10 times better at absorbing NIR than is ‎ ONB and is not posinous to cells.‎ ‎53. According to the passage, which of the following could be the best trigger?‎ ‎ A. Temperature change.   B. NIR light.  C. Acidity change.       D. UV light.‎ ‎54. Why is ONB unsatisfactory?‎ 19‎ ‎ A. It breaks down when it absorbs NIR light. B. It falls off the polymer and triggers drug release. C. It has not come onto the market up till now. D. It is not effective enough and could be poisonous.‎ ‎55. Which word can be used to complete the following process of changes?‎ Drug is released Polymer breaks down Bhcs absorb NIR Part of the cresol is__________‎ ‎ A. protected      B. formed      C. exposed      D. combined C Frederic Mishkin who's been a professor at Columbia Business School for almost 30 years is good at solving problems and expressing ideas.Whether he's standing in front of a lecture hall or engaged in a casual conversation his hands are always waving and pointing. When he was in graduate school one of his professors was so annoyed by this constant gesturing that he made the young economist sit on his hands whenever he visited the professor's office.‎ ‎ It turns out however that Mishkin's professor had it exactly wrong.Gesture doesn't prevent but promotes clear thought and speech.Research demonstrates that the movements we make with our hands when we talk form a kind of second language adding information that's absent from our words. It's learning's secret code:Gesture reveals what we know.It reveals what we don't know. What's more the agreement(or lack of agreement)between what our voices say and how our hands move offers a clue to our readiness to learn.‎ ‎ Manyof the studies establishing the importance of gesture to learning have been conducted by Susan Goldin-Meadow a professor of psychology at the University of Chicago."We change our minds by moving our hands " writes Goldin-Meadow in a review of this work.Particularly significant are what she calls "mismatches" between oral expression and physical gestures.A student might say that a heavier ball falls faster than a light one for example but make a gesture indicating that they fall at the same rate which is correct.Such differences indicate that we're moving from one level of understanding to another. The thoughts expressed by hand motions are often our newest and most advanced ideas about the problem we're working on; we can't yet absorb these concepts into language but we can capture them in movement.‎ Goldin-Meadow's more recent work strews not only that gesture shows our readiness to learn but that it actually helps to bring learning about. It does so in two ways.First it elicits (引 19‎ 出)helpful behavior from others around us.Goldin-Meadow has found that adults respond to children's speech-gesture mismatches by adjusting their way of instruction.Parents and teachers apparently receive the signal that children are ready to learn and they act on it by offering a greater variety of problem-solving techniques. The act of gesturing itself also seems to quicken learning bringing new knowledge into consciousness and aiding the understanding of new concepts.A 2007 study by Susan Wagner Cook an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Iowa reported that third-graders who were asked to gesture while learning algebra( 代数)were nearly three times more likely to remember what they'd learned than classmates who did not gesture.‎ 56. According to Paragraph 1 Frederic Mishkin was asked to sit on his hands because______.‎ A.he could express his ideas that way B. he always pointed his finger at his professor C. his professor did not like his gesturing D.his gestures prevented his professor from thinking ‎57.How is gesturing important in acquiring knowledge?‎ A.It draws helpful responses from others and increases learning speed.‎ B.It promotes second language learning and quickens thinking.‎ C.It provides significant clues for solving academic problems.‎ D.It reduces students' reliance on teachers' instruction.‎ ‎58.What can be inferred from the passage about gesture-speech mismatches?‎ A.They can stimulate our creativity.‎ B.Instructors should make full use of them.‎ C.Teachers can hardly explain new concepts without them.‎ D.They serve as a stepping stone to solving real life problems.‎ ‎59.What could be the best title of the passage?‎ A.Hand Motions a Second Language B.Gesturing:Signal of Understanding C.New Uses of Gesturing D.The Secret Code of Learning 19‎ D To learn to think is to learn to question. Those who don't question never truly think for themselves. These are simple rules that have governed the advancement of science and human thought since the beginning of time. Advancements are made when thinkers question theories and introduce new ones. Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought. Aristotle was a brilliant philosopher whose theories explained much of the natural world, often incorrectly. He was so esteemed by the scientific community that even 1,200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them!‎ Brilliant minds can intimidateupandcoming thinkers who are not confident of their abilities. They often believe they are inferior to the minds of giants such as Aristotle, leading many to accept current paradigms instead of questioning them.‎ I, like many thinkers of the past, once believed in my mental inferiority. I was certain that my parents, my teachers—adults in general—were always right. They were like a textbook to me; I didn't question what was written on those pages. I respected them, and accepted whatever they told me. But that attitude soon changed. My mind's independence was first stimulated in the classroom.‎ A stern, 65yearold elementaryschool science teacher once told me that light is a type of wave. I confidently went through years of school believing that light is a wave. One day, however I heard the German exchange student mention that light could be made up of particles. As the others laughed at his statement, I started to question my beliefs.‎ Maybe the teachers and textbooks hadn't given me the whole story. I went to the library, did some research and learned of the lightasawave versus lightasaparticle debate. I read about Einstein's discovery of the dual nature of light and learned the facts of a paradox(悖论) that puzzles the world's greatest thinkers to this day. Light behaves as both a particle and a wave, it is both at once. I realized I had gone through life accepting only half of the story as the whole truth.‎ Each new year brought more new facts, and I formulated even more questions. I found myself in the library after school, trying to find my own answers to gain a more complete understanding of what I thought I already knew. I discovered that my parents and teachers are incredible tools in my quest for knowledge, but they are never the final word. Even textbooks can be challenged. I learned to question my sources, I learned to be a thinker. I once believed that everything I learned at home and at school was certain, but I have now discovered to ‎ 19‎ reexamine when necessary.‎ Questions are said to be the path to knowledge and truth, and I plan to continue questioning. How many things do we know for sure today that we will question in the future? At this moment, I know that our sun will burn for another five billion years, and I know nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole. This knowledge, however, may change in the next 20 years—maybe even in the next two. The one thing we can control now is our openness to discovery. Questions are the tools of open minds, and open minds are the key to intellectual advancement.‎ ‎60. How many tears in a bottle of wine? These aren’t just the lyrics to a song by the Australian musician Paul Kelly. They are the kind of questions you are likely to be asked during a job interview.‎ 19‎ In recent years, it has become common for bosses to ask interview questions that are impossible to answer. There is no right answer to these “brainteasers”. Instead, they are supposed to help an interviewer calculate an applicant’s ability to reason. What matters is how you come to the conclusion, not what conclusion you arrive at.‎ Brainteasers started out in management consultancy firms. Young graduates hoping to join the company would be asked: “How many phone booths are there in Manhattan?” They weren’t expected to blurt out a random number — instead, they were expected to show they could solve even the most stupid problem.‎ As consultants swarmed across other organizations, they bought their inscrutable(难以理解的)questions with them. Now, people applying for a job in a call center can expect to be asked how a nuclear power plant works.‎ While many bosses have great confidence in how good or effective brainteasers are, a research paper published in the journal Applied Psychology found they are useless for spotting the best candidate for the job. What they are great for is to make employers feel like intellectual giants.‎ The study’s findings are not surprising. Studies have repeatedly found that most methods of selecting job candidates are hopelessly flawed.Job interviews are among the worst way of picking the right person for the job.‎ The results of this research raise the question: if interviews are bad at picking the right person for the job, what are they there for? One feeling I have is that many job selection processes are thinly disguised (伪装的)forms of suffering, designed to make applicants feel worthless and boost the confidence of the person asking the question.‎ Think about the extensive list of personal skills required for even the most lowly entry-level job. Or those painful assessment centers where you are supposed to play nice with people you are competing against to get the job. And then there are the firms that ask applicants to make a presentation to convey how awesome the firms are. All these exercises seem designed not to get the best person for the role, but to assure the boss how great they are, and remind you just how lucky you would be to get this boring job.‎ Passage outline Supporting details Introduction to brainteasers l They are widely used in job interviews and the answers are__76__to interpretation.‎ l They focus more on an applicant’s ___77___ skills ratherthan the 19‎ outcomes.‎ ‎___78___ and Popularity of brainteasers l They started out in management consultancy firms and spread to other organizations.‎ l Nowadays,a job applicant is often asked questions__79__to the job he applies for.‎ Research findings l ‎___80___ to popular belief of the bosses, brainteasers areactually useless for selecting candidates.‎ l They are just meant to show off the __81___of theemployers.‎ In—depth Analysis l Many job selection processes make job applicants have a poor ‎___82___of themselves and the employers moreconfident.‎ l Some job applicants are asked to show skills, some of whichare ‎___83___the requirements of a certain occupation.‎ l In some assessment centers, job applicants are required to play nice with their___84___.‎ l Some job applicants are supposed to make a presentation to___85___‎ the firms.‎ 第七部分 书面表达(满分20分)‎ Chinese tourism industry is relatively young but very attractive. With 288 billion dollars spent worldwide in 2018, Chinese tourists’ spending represents a quarter of global tourism spending. ‎ Nowadays traveling is easier than some years ago and visiting a foreign country is as common as moving in China. For this reason when Chinese tourists plan their holiday, they often have the dilemma whether it is better to move abroad or to stay in China. ‎ China has the largest outbound(出境的) tourism market. Indeed, more than 71 million Chinese tourists traveled abroad in 2018, 15 percent more than the previous year. This phenomenon is due to different factors, the first one being rising incomes.
