There are billions of people on this planet, and many of us love to eat meat. In 2018 alone, the
average American will consume more than 100 kgs of red meat, according to a report from the US
Department of Agriculture (USDA). At the same time, the environmental impact caused by meat
consumption – waste, animal treatment, health issues and even the greenhouse gas effects – has given
rise to a number of startups （新兴企业） looking for ways to fill our growing demand for meat.
But can the demand be filled in a sustainable and affordable way?
A bunch of companies are not only optimistic but are working to make this happen sooner. All of
these companies harvest cells from animals and grow them in a lab. For example, San Francisco-based
Memphis Meats is developing cell-based meats in its laboratories by manufacturing fat and muscle
cells without requiring any animals. And don’t worry if you’re not a meat lover. Startups such as Jet
Eat, which is based in Israel, are working on food products grown in labs that are plant based and
produce meats using natural ingredients while still maintaining flavor, consistency and the “overall
sensory experience”.
As you can imagine, there are plenty of hurdles facing the industry. Educating the public is a big
one. Another controversial issue is the labelling of the products. Meat industry trade groups have been
pressing the USDA to more strictly regulate alternative meats, labeled as “imitation products”.
Many of us have concerns about the challenges facing future generations as our global population
swells and the earth’s natural resources shrink. The good news is that there are plenty of companies
around the world – like those producing lab-grown meats - who are working to solve some of these

When the clock struck midnight on February 23, my flight left the Egyptian capital Cairo heading
for Beijing. I was about to start a 10-month program organized by China’s Public Diplomacy
Association.
During this program offered to African journalists to better understand China and report on some
important events, one being the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September, I gained a lot of
knowledge regarding the culture, history, and features of this vast society.
Upon arrival, I first sought out the Egyptian community in Beijing, and met two journalists from
my country who worked for Xinhua News Agency and China Global Television Network. Our
gathering point was an Egyptian coffee shop in Sanlitun, a well-known meeting place for foreigners in
Beijing. Most of our meetings were spent sharing experiences about life in China. Indeed, I was able to
begin understanding the country through their stories. Plus, through those friends I expanded my
circle.
I also struck up a relationship with some Chinese journalists while participating in activities with
my African peers. They helped me appreciate the rich culture and eventful history of ancient China, as
well as the massive developments over the last 40 years, both politically and economically
During my stay, I traveled to nine provinces and visited masses of cities. The place I was most
connected with was Sanya due to its similarities to Sharm El-Sheikh, one of the world’s most famous
tourist destinations, located on the Red Sea in Egypt.
Shanghai will also last in my memory. I discover that this city is not only distinguished for
business deals, but has a colorful history illustrated by its fantastic museum, which tells the story of
how Shanghai’s importance grew in the 19th century.
When walking in Beijing or any of the other cities I visited, I always felt history mixed with signs
of modernity, mirroring four decades of hard work. I recorded many aspects of my life in china.

There’s a song by the great Jamaican singer Bob Marley called So Much Trouble In The World.
Marley understood that part of the reason why there are so many problems in the world is the lack of
tolerance between people. The UN understands this too—that’s why it made Nov 16 “International
Day for Tolerance”.
But first of all, what is tolerance? French philosopher Voltaire (1694—1778) can give us some
help. According to him, tolerance “is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty (脆弱)
and error; let us pardon each other’s folly—that is the first law of nature.”
Nobody’s perfect. When we’re tempted to criticize another person, we should perhaps remember
our own imperfections first.
Very often, people don’t realize that they’re intolerant. This is because intolerance has a lot to do
with ignorance. For example, the UN’s campaign is in part about the treatment of females by males.
But often, the behavior of men toward women is intolerant because men don’t put themselves in the
shoes of women.
It’s worth thinking a little about the words “tolerance” and “intolerance”. Are they the best words
to describe the evils of which we’re speaking here? To agree to be “tolerant” of someone isn’t
necessarily a very respectful thing. When someone is tolerated, it implies that there’s something
wrong with them.
But it seems wrong that people should agree to “tolerate” people with black skin, for example.
And should women think they have received the respect they are due when men agree to “tolerate”
them?
Still, what Voltaire said stands: We humans are not perfect and this weakness is something that
we all share. That’s the reason we should be tolerant.
It’s a little like generosity. We can give things to another person, and we can also give our
forgiveness. Bob Marley understood this. In the song mentioned above, he advised: “Write your love
on a rock so it stays for eternity; write your hate in the sand so the waves will wash it away.”
