As one of the representatives of our school, I am scheduled to participate in a Poetry Reading Competition tomorrow, which makes it impossible for me to attend your English class. However, practising my spoken English in your class is what I have been longing for, so it would be a real pity just to let the chance slip away. I sincerely hope you can rearrange my presentation, offering me another opportunity. Once again, I am sorry for any inconvenience caused. Hope you can accept my apology and thank you for your understanding. The necessity and significance of hugging is confirmed by a recent study. In the study, participants were asked about their conflict experience and the hugs they received with exposure to cold viruses at the same time. The study shows hugs help avoid negative feelings and relieve stress. The study also finds hugging can strengthen people’s immune system, reducing the possibility to develop illnesses. Surely hugging is an ideal way to give us comfort. Text 1 W: Be quick! The meeting will start in ten minutes. M: It’s only a quarter past eight. Didn’t I tell you that Dr. Smith decided to start half an hour later than planned? Text 2 W: I haven’t seen Barry recently. It’s so quiet here without him. M: He moved away, actually. He wanted to live with his two cousins. W: Do they live far from campus? M: Yes, but he says he doesn't mind. Text 3 M: Madam, you ran through that stop sign. May I see your driver’s license, please? W: Oh, I'm sorry. I didn’t see the stop sign at the corner. I didn't mean to break the law. Text 4 M: Don’t I recognize you from somewhere? W: I don't know what you are talking about. You must have confused me with someone else. M: You can't fool me! You're that movie star! You’re in town filming a new movie! I read about you in this morning’s paper. W: Oh, come on, I'm just trying to get a cup of coffee. Give me a break, will you? Text 5 M: I know I promised to drive you to the airport, but I am afraid something has come up. They’ve arranged a special meeting at work. W: It doesn't matter. Karen said she could give me a lift there. Text 6 W: Hey, John. Would you like to go play tennis with me? M: Sure, but I would rather play basketball or soccer. W: Oh? I thought tennis was your favorite sport. M: It used to be when I was in middle school. W: Well, I'm not great at basketball. Let’s play tennis today. M. OK. I’ll teach you basketball another time W: Great! So today let’s go to the school tennis courts. M: No problem. I finish class around 3: 00 p. m. See you then. Text 7 W: Yes, sir. How can I help you? M: It's... it's my briefcase. It's gone! It's... it's got all the documents for my meeting in Manchester... and... W: Alright, sir, alright. Just, uh... calm down a second. Now, uh... if you could just start from the beginning, please tell me exactly what happened. M: Right. Well, I was standing in line at that stall over there to get a sandwich to eat on the train, and I put my briefcase down on the floor beside me while I took out some money to pay the cashier... ten seconds later I went to pick it up, and... and it was gone. W: Oh, okay. And what does it look like, sir? M: Look like? It’s just an ordinary briefcase, large, brown, leather. Oh, and it has my initials, L.R.S., on it. W: Right, sir. And when did you say ... Text 8 M: Please tell us what it is like to go to school in Australia, Sue. W: I’ll be glad to. I go to Bellview High School in North Sydney. I’ve just finished my exams and have come to China for a short holiday. Next year I’ll go into year 12, which will be my last year of high school. My favourite subject is history but I also study English, Chinese, maths and science. M: When are your school holidays in Australia? W: We have two weeks’ holiday in March, July and October and a five-week holiday during our summer. M: Do you want to go to university when you finish school? W: Yes. I want to study Asian languages. Coming to China for a holiday gives me a good chance to practise my conversational skills. M: What places have you been to in China? W. I’ve been in Beijing now for four days. Yesterday I went to the Great Wall. I also saw the Ming Tombs. Tomorrow I’m going to see the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. M. When will you go back to Australia? W: I’m flying home on Saturday. I’ll spend one day in Wuhan and then two days in Shanghai before I leave. M. Thank you, Sue. I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday in China. Text 9 W: You'd better put on your coat before you go out there. It’s really cold. M: Thanks. I 'm really not used to this winter weather. W: Well, get ready for some more of it. I hear we’re going to have our first big snowstorm tonight. They’re predicting more than a foot of snow by morning. M. That’s going to be quite something. W: Yes. They might even cancel classes tomorrow. M: Really? Would they actually close the university? W: Sure! The students who live on campus might be able to get to classes without much difficulty, but the ones who live far away wouldn’t be able to make it. M: I suppose the roads would be impossible to travel on for a while, at least until the snow is cleared. So how do we know whether classes will be cancelled or not? Will the school put up a notice or send us a message? W: Well, you can tune in to certain radio stations, and they announce all the school closings. M: Thanks for all the information. But we’ll miss quite a few classes if the school is closed. I just wonder if this is actually good news. W: Well, don't worry. The professors will offer make-up classes at some point later in the term, so there's no loss. Well, we’ll see each other in class tomorrow... or maybe not. Text 10 Now, I’d like to begin by giving you a few tips on taking notes in lectures. This is a vital skill, so listen 高三英语参考答案 第 4 页 共 6 页 up! Most important of all is that you shouldn’t try to make a note of everything you hear. A lecture is not a dictation. You have to listen and decide what is important and what isn’t. Second, when you make notes, don't write everything in full sentences. Use abbreviations, symbols, numbers... anything to help keep pace. Also, try to organize your notes effectively. Furthermore, you should try to be an active listener. By that, I mean you need to try and predict what the speaker is going to say... so before the lecture, ask yourself what you already know about the topic, and during the lecture think about where the talk might be heading. Another useful tip is if you miss something, don’t panic. Lecturers usually repeat themselves—certainly the important information —by summarizing. Something else you should be sure to do is listen for the main ideas, as well as the details. And finally, after the lecture you should review your notes as soon as possible. That means basically writing them out again, but this time reorganize them, emphasize the main points, and even add your own thoughts and comments. Reviewing your notes in this way will help everything sink in and will make for a useful study aid. So now that I’ve covered that, I’ll start with the registration.
