We spend hours, days and years of our lives in school. Imagine you could design
your dream school, what would it be like? What would you be doing? We wanted to find
out what teenagers around the world thought. Here is what they said:
Richard from the USA: My dream school would have a big swimming pool and two soccer
fields. It would also have a cinema, a gym and a shopping centre. My school has none
of these, and I think there should be more pleasant things for students to do while
they are studying.
Sonia from Italy: I’d like a room where we can relax and play computer games. I’d
also like to have a music room. I think there should be a place for everyone to go
and relax after class.
Wu from Beijing: I think it would be great to have another day off (休息日) every
week, besides the weekend. If that day was a Friday or a Monday, we would have a long
weekend every week. What fun! I also think school should start later, at about 10
o’clock, and finish earlier.
Hannah from Australia: In my dream school, I think the teachers should give us more

Floods, storms and other natural events kill thousands of people every year. So
does extreme heat. In fact, heat may be natural deadliest killer.
Several hot days that follow each other are considered a heat wave. Experts say
heat waves often become dangerous when they nighttime temperature does not drop much
from the highest daytime temperature.
Extreme heat can does harm to very young children---especially when they are left
in a car. Every year, there are news reports about young children dying after they
were left inside cars in the summer sun.
Jan Null is a meteorologist, a weather expert at San Francisco State University.
Since 1998, he has recorded deaths of children from what medical experts call
“vehicular heatstroke”(车辆中暑). He says the US has an average of 38 such deaths
each year of children left alone in cars.
Mr. Null told the USA today that the highest number of deaths take place in July
and August. But he notes that vehicular heatstroke can happen at any time of the year.
He says a child can die from the heat after being left in a car when the outside
temperature is as low as 14℃. USA Today reports that 70% of vehicular heatstroke victims were children under the
age of two. It says more than half of the deaths happened because the child’s caregiver
forgot the child was in the car. About one third of the deaths happened when the child
got in the car and was unable to get out of it.
The newspaper notes the temperature inside a car can reach 43℃ when the temperature
outside is 14℃. And it says the body temperature of a child can increase three times
faster than adults.

CScientists have found that human eyes are more likely to be damaged by UV rays (紫外线)
while skiing in the snow-covered areas than sitting on the beach, according to a report
by the UK newspaper The Telegraph.
The researchers at Kanazawa Medical University, Japan and American company Johnson
Johnson conducted the study together. They looked at the effects of light reflection
on newly fallen snow on a ski trail (a rough path) in Ishikawa District, northern
Japan. They compared the results with the levels of UV rays on a sand beach in southern
Japan's Okinawa District.
They found that on the beach, eyes are exposed to a daily 260 kilojoules (千焦耳)
of UV a square meter compared to 658 kilojoules in snow-covered areas.
The findings are supported by the Japan Meteorological Agency. According to the
agency, the reflection rate of UV light on beaches is often between 10 and 25 percent,
compared to 80 percent in the new snow areas. The amount of light increased 4 percent
with a 300-meter rise in height.
Most of us know that UV rays can harm the skin. That's why we wear sunscreen on
our skin before we get out in the sun. But many of us may not realize that UV rays
are also harmful to the eyes.
If your eyes are exposed to large amounts of UV radiation over a short period of
time, you may experience a kind of sunburn of the eye, which is harmful. Your eyes
will become red and feel a strange feeling. They may be sensitive to light. Fortunately,
this is usually temporary ( 暂 时 的 ) and seldom causes permanent damage to the
eyes.
Long-term exposure to UV radiation, however, can be more serious. Scientific studies
and researches have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period
of many years increases the chance of eye damage, which could lead to total blindness.
9. You would most likely find the article in
A. a doctor's diary B. a travel journal
C. a medical magazine D. a physics textbook
10. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Too much eye exposure to UV rays may cause total blindness.
B. Short-time exposure of the eyes to UV rays doesn't harm them at all.
C. Most people know that UV rays harm the eyes as well as the skin.
D. The study was conducted by researchers from Japan, the USA and the UK.
11. The underlined word "sunscreen" in Paragraph 6 most probably means ______.
A. sunglasses B. sunhat C. suncream D. sunburn
12. What will the passage most probably talk about next?
A. Never ski on newly fallen snow in Japan.
B. Go to hospital to have your eyes examined.
C. Wearing a hat can provide protection while skiing in new snow areas.
D. Take some measures to protect your eyes while skiing in new snow areas.
D
