of a few of them.
Abraham Lincoln(1809-1865)
Abraham Lincoln was one of America’s greatest leaders, taking the country through the Civil
War(from 1860 to 1865). However, his life was never easy. He started numerous businesses that

Polytechnic School. He later famously said, “Success is failure in progress. ”
Stephen King(born 1947)
Stephen King is one of the best-selling authors of all time, but his first book, Carrie, was

I'm standing in a class of wild 14-year-old girls as they throw paper and howl( 大声喊叫)
with laughter. They won't listen to me.
I was 22 and I didn't know what I was doing. I never wanted to teach. I wanted to be a writer.
But when I arrived in London, they were short of teachers.
My efforts at teaching were hopeless. When the bell finally rang, I rushed to the staff room,
red with anger. The other teachers weren't surprised. " That's 4B, the worst class in school, "one
said.
I was worried about our next meeting, but I couldn’t give up. I needed the job. So I abandoned
formal lessons. Instead, I brought topics for class discussions. One of the liveliest talks was about
the arguments they had with their parents. They paid attention and shared about their lives. I was
fascinated(入迷的).
So I had them write about themselves. Most wrote about families with little money and big
problems.
As time went on, their essays became a bridge between us. I admired their humor and toughness(坚
韧) , and I think they appreciated my interest in their lives.
I asked if they'd like to see it when the musical My Fair Lady was playing in the West End.
They thought I was joking. No teacher had ever suggested taking them out. A few weeks later, 4B
and I were sitting in a theater. They loved the music, the costumes and the character and they talked
about it for days.
Near the end of the semester, some one knocked on the door of the staff room. Two girls in 4B
were there -with flowers. I was proud to know I had touched their lives, but they had also touched
mine. I enjoyed teaching and getting along with teenagers. When I returned to Australia several years later, I still wanted to be a writer. For the first time
in my life, I stopped dreaming and started writing. My first story was titled, My Fair Ladies.
Teaching wasn't the end of my writing career; it was the beginning.

paragraphs? A.The author was popular with
the students’ parents.

C. The author started to write because she was bored with teaching.
D. The author’s teaching experiences benefited her writing.

Friendship is an important part of human life. Friends can share our joys and our sorrows. We
aren't alone. Many different animals also make friends.
Recently, a British research team finished an eight-year study of Indo-Pacific dolphins off the
coast of Western Australia. These dolphins can use different tools to search for food. The
researchers found that these dolphins are more willing to wander with partners that like the same
tool. Other factors, like family closeness or sex, have no impact on this relationship.
Apart from dolphins, elephants, horses and bats are also known to form friendships. Are
friendships only limited to the same species?
Of course not. The Atlantic reported. In 2015, a goat Timur was originally left in the tiger
Amur's enclosure(围场) as a meal. But instead of eating Timur, Amur likes to play with it and gets
jealous when others are close to his friend.
The Atlantic said it's not unusual among captive( 圈 禁 的 )animals. That' s because in captivity, animals don't need to spend much time and energy marking their territory (领 地 ) the way
they would in the wild. They are actually more likely to feel bored and thus more likely to
socialize(交际) and play with others instead of thinking of eating something.
More interestingly, animals not only make friends but also try to keep lasting friendships.
Take bats for example. In 2011, scientists found that bats preferred to wander with a few certain
friends keeping loose ties to the rest of their group.
Humans aren't so different. "We do not work, play and live together with the same friends all
the time, Swiss zoologist Gerald Kerth explained. " However, we are able to keep long-term
relationships.. despite our often highly dynamic (动态的) social lives.
29. What did the recent British research find about dolphins?
A. They form friendships based on family closeness.
B. They are likely to make friends based on interests.
C. They are better at building friendships than other animals.
D. They form a group to hunt for food together.
30. What's the main purpose of Paragraph 5?
A. To show how different species get along with each other.
B. To prove captive animals are friendlier than others.
C. To explain why captive animals can form friendships.
D. To compare the difference between a tiger and a goat’s friendship.
31. What can we infer from Gerald Kerth's words?
A. Animals like to wander with different friends.
B. Animals might feel bored with friends of the same species.
C. Humans are better at keeping long-term relationships than animals.
D. Humans and animals make and maintain friendships in similar ways.
32. What's the text mainly about?
A. How to build strong ties with your friends.
B. Animals also make friends and keep friendship.
C. The importance of friendship between animals and humans.
D. The different ways humans and animals socialize.
D
Modern agriculture and its ability to feed billions of people may be one of humanity's greatest
achievements. However, it comes with hidden costs. For example, have you ever considered how
much water is needed to provide you with a steak or a salad? It may surprise you.
In a recent study published in the journal Nutrients, scientists from Australia's national science organization took a close look at the diets of 9,341 adult Australians- specifically, their
“water-scarcity footprints(水消耗足迹)”.
It turned out that a sweet tooth not only adds to our waistlines( 腰 围 ) but also has an effect
on our
water resources.
The water-scarcity footprint is a widely recognized measurement(测量) of water consumption.
First, it counts the liters of water you used per day. Then, it looks at the place where the water was
used. Using a liter of water in the desert is not the same as using a liter of water in a tropical (热带
的) rainforest. The more scarce(缺 乏的) water is in your area, the larger your water-scarcity
footprint.
The scientists found that the average Australian's diet had a water-scarcity footprint of 362
liters per day. Snacks and beverages such as cookies, cakes, sodas and alcohol accounted for 25
percent of the water-scarcity footprint. The research also included a glass of wine (41 liters), a
single serving of potato chips(23 liters), and a small bar of milk chocolate(21 liters).
Not surprisingly, cutting out snacks would be the No. 1 priority if you wanted to lower your
own water-scarcity footprint.
Earth's surface is 70 percent water, but only 2.5 percent of that can be used for drinking or
farming. While humanity faces an uphill battle to feed its growing population, climate change is
causing droughts and extreme weather in agricultural centers like California and eastern Australia.
By 2030, a world of about 8.6 billion people will need 35 percent more water, 40 percent
more energy and 50 percent more food, according to the United States National Intelligence
Council.
So we need to watch what we eat, not just for our personal health but for the health of our
societies.
33. What did the recent study find according to the text?
A. Eating sweets could cause our water-scarcity footprints to be bigger.
B. There are many hidden places lacking water.
C. A sweet tooth has a positive effect on our water resources.
D. A sweet tooth leads to a smaller water- scarcity footprint.
34. What do we know about water-scarcity footprint according to paragraph 4?
A. It adds up the water we used in one year.
B. It doesn’t change wherever we are.
C. It counts the amount of water a family wastes.
D. It seems to be bigger if your area is short of water.35. The underlined word"priority"in Paragraph 6 probably means .
A. something that needs to be done first
B. something that is popular with certain people
C. the last thing someone wants to do
D. a surprising choice
36. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. To form a good eating habit.
B. Stop snacking to save water.
C. Water shortages lead to many social problems.
D. A bigger population , a greater shortage of water.

with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was

One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way

parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and
the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she
would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to
his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late
and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned
that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and
promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.

M: I know. This is just more exciting, and I can relate to the main characters.
W: It sounds like you would like historical fiction. It's a bit above your current reading level now,
though.
M: Mrs. Lang? Can I take this home with me?(13)
W: Certainly. Just write your name down, along with the date you check it out. It's due back in one
week.(13)
M: I'll finish it before that! Text 9
M: Hi, long time no see. Are you accustomed to the life here in London?(14) W: Yes, but the weather is different here.
M: Do you like it more here?
W: Well, London can be warm and sunny in the summer. But in the winter it can be very cold and
rainy. (14)
M: How do you travel to work?(15)
W: Usually I go by underground, (15) because it's quicker than bus or taxi. But the tickets are
more expensive than in Athens.
M: Is life in London expensive? (16)
W: Well, supermarkets aren't, (16) but restaurants are very expensive. English people don't eat
in restaurants as much as Greeks.
M: Are English people very different from Greek people? W: Yes. in some ways.
M: How about the people here at work?
W: Those I work with are very nice, and I’ve got some good friends here in London. We often go
out together.
M: Where?
W: Sometimes we go to a bar for a drink. And last Saturday it was my birthday. (17) M: Oh!
Happy birthday for last Saturday!
W: Thank you. We went to an Italian restaurant. (17) It was lovely! M: Oh, very nice!
Text 10
Good afternoon. Today, I will be giving you the study guide for your coming exam. Although it
will cover all 15 chapters of our textbook,(18) you will only be tested onwhat give you today. So, if you pay close attention, the exam should be pretty straightforward. As
I said last Friday, there will be a total of 10 essay questions. You will need to use a minimum of
three concepts you have learned from each other in responding to each of the questions. I will
provide extra credit questions at the end of the exam.
If you have any questions after class, come to see me at my office. I will be available for the
rest of this week and the beginning of next week. The exam will be next Wednesday.(19) Anyone
who needs to make up the exam may do so on the following Monday. However, you must be able
to provide a doctor’s note or a written letter from you parents explaining your situation in order to
take the makeup exam.
(20) There will be no exceptions. Any questions?
