There was a lot of news around the life extension drugs that hit the market a
decade ago. They didn’t promise that you would live forever, but they gave you a chance
to extend your life an extra five to ten years.Even though the life expectancy rate
at birth has increased greatly, the life expectancy for seniors hasn’t improved that
much.Basically, you have a greater chance to become a senior, but you will not have
a much longer lifespan, and this is where the anti-aging drugs intend to kick in.So,do
the anti-aging drugs work?Well,it is too early to tell. But the sales so far are very
good.

Of the total US population of 378 million, people over 65 years old now make up
20% for the first time. The senior ratio was only 4.1% by the year 1900,and 12.4% 30
years ago.The number of people above 65 compared to those of what is considered working
ages,between 15 and 64,is currently 33.7%.This is up from 18.5% in the year 2005,which
means that for every retired person there are now two workers, compared to four workers
30 years ago.The number of people above the age of 80 has grown to 23.8 million, making
them 6.3% of the total population compared to 3.6% in 2005.April 12,2040

now sold in the US is of the environmentally friendly Re-Hydro label, produced through
electrolysis(电解)based on a source of 100% renewable energy.Several producers have

of Re-Hydro on the same level as regular hydrogen. Most analysts believe that Re-Hydro
will be the dominating fuel in the future.

Demand for the Chinese tech company’s devices(设备) is red hot even though the
country’s overall market for smartphones is getting smaller. Huawei's China sales
rocketed more than 20% in the final quarter of 2018, and experts say that's partly due to the US government's global campaign against the company.
“The latest tension between the US and China raised the patriotism(爱国主义) in
Chinese consumers, said Jusy Hong, an analyst at research firm IHS Markit
He pointed out that some Chinese companies encouraged employees to buy Huawei
phones late last year. The moves were a gesture of support after the firm's chief
financial officer was arrested in Canada in early December at the request of the United
States.
Huawei's booming sales show how major parts of its business continue to increase
even as the United States tries to persuade other countries to shut Huawei products
out of 5G wireless networks and pursues(追究) criminal charges against it. The company
expects to overtake Samsung as the world's biggest smartphone maker by next year.
Huawei sold 30 million phones in China in the last three months of 2018, nearly
three times as many as Apple(AAPL), according to data published this week by research
firms Canalys and IDC. Apple's sales plunged almost 20%.
Huawei's success in China, the world's largest smartphone market, is more than
about geopolitics(地缘政治). Chinese consumers love its flagship, high -end- phones
because they have great cameras, cutting edge technology and cost less than the latest
iPhones, according to analysts. And by offering a selection of cheaper phones, Huawei
is able to target a bigger market.
It also benefited from the troubles this year at ZTE (ZTCOF), a rival Chinese
smartphone and telecommunications equipment maker. ZTE was banned by the US government
from buying vital American parts for months last year.
28. Why did Huawei's China sales increase greatly according to the article?
A. Because the company's devices are always popular worldwide.
B. Because Chinese consumers' patriotism was arousedC. Because the government encourages people to buy Huawei devices.
D. Because the country's overall market for smartphones is getting bigger.
29. What can we conclude from the third paragraph?
A. Huawei’s chief financial officer was arrested in Canada due to the US's request.
B. All Chinese companies showed their support to Huawei with their purchase.
C. Jusy Hong thought the United States arrested Huawei's chief financial officer.
D. Jusy Hong thought the arrest of Huawei's chief financial officer is unfair.
30. How do you understand the underlined word in the fifth paragraph?
A. increased greatly by. B. reduced greatly to. C. dropped greatly by. D.
remained steady.
31. Why is Huawei's success in China more than about geopolitics?
A. Because Huawei has the largest smartphone market in the world.
B. Because Huawei's success is only limited within China mainland.
C. Because Huawei has the ability to target a bigger market in the world.
D. Because Chinese consumers are quite satisfied with Huawei smartphones.
D
Visitors to Britain are sometimes surprised to learn that newspapers there have
such a large circulation. The “quality” newspapers are often held up as an example
of impartial journalism, but the Daily Mirror and the Daily Express usually impress
newspapermen even more because they both sell about four million copies every
day.British families generally buy a newspaper every morning and frequently take two
or three on Sundays, but the vast circulation figures obtained are not only due to
the Englishman’s thirst for news.Because the newspapers are all published
nationally, copies can be delivered everywhere at the same time.Though people abroad often know the names of the national papers, they seldom
realize that there is another branch of the British press which sells almost as many
copies.Local newspapers have a weekly circulation of 13 million.Almost every town
and country area has one.Nearly all of them hold their own finance and many of them
are very profitable.
These papers are written almost entirely for readers interested in local events
— births, weddings, deaths, council meetings and sports — but the content is naturally
influenced by the kind of community they serve.Editors prefer to rely on a small staff
of people who all know the district well.A great deal of local news is regularly
supplied by clubs and churches in the neighbourhood and it does not get out of date
as quickly as national news.If there is no room for it in this week’s edition,an
item can sometimes be held until the following week.
The editor must never forget that the success of any newspaper depends on
advertising. He is usually anxious to keep the good will of local businessmen for this
reason. But if the newspaper is well written and the news items are carefully chosen
to attract local readers, the businessmen are grateful for the opportunity to keep
their products in the public eye.
Local newspapers do not often comment on problems of national importance and
editors rarely hold with taking sides on political questions. But they can often be
of service to the community in expressing public feeling on local issues.A newspaper
can sometimes persuade the council to take action to provide better shopping
facilities, improve transport in the area and preserve local monuments and places of
interest.
32The Daily Mirror impresses newspapermen more because .
A.it has a larger circulation than many other famous papers
B.it is of better quality than many other papers
C.it is sold nationally
D.it is delivered everywhere in Britain
33.Local papers are preferred by readers who . A.are interested in news B.are much interested in local
events
C.want to get news as quickly as possible D.work in churches and clubs
34.According to the passage, businessmen would like to advertise in papers if .
A.the papers are well written B.the news items are carefully
chosen
C.the news involves them D.the papers are popular and can
attract readers
35. The last paragraph implies(暗示)that .
A.local papers seldom comment on politics
B.local papers can sometimes influence policy making
C.local papers are more concerned about their own communities
D.local papers do not take sides on problems of national importance

第二节:读后续写(25 分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I woke up earlier than my brother as every other day of the week. I jumped out
of the bed, got dressed, brushed my teeth, and had breakfast. Saying good bye to my
mother, I got in the car no later than 7:05. I got to school on time, even though
my brother came out of the house late as he used to.
It was a Thursday. I was walking to the chemistry rooms when my phone in my left
pocket vibrated(震动). I took it out and looked at the shiny screen. As soon as I
saw my father’s name on that screen I realized something was not right.
He would not call me in the middle of a school day just to talk. He would want
me to focus in school and do well. I answered the phone, and my father sounded worried. He told me to find my brother as soon as possible, walk with him to the school picking-up
zone and get in the car with my brother. Our driver would take us back home where
my father was.
When I was in the car with my brother my dad called the driver and told him to
take us to the hospital. We were going to meet him and my mum there. As soon as my
brother and I found about the change in plans, we looked at each other in the eyes.
I immediately noticed the fear in brother’s eyes.
To be honest, I was really scared too, probably more than he was. But I did not
say anything. We arrived at the hospital. I saw my dad on the phone waiting for us
at the entrance. He was smoking. Seeing my dad smoking made me more worried. I had
never seen him smoke before. He hated it. As soon as he recognized the white car,
he threw the cigarette away. I looked at my brother; he was looking out of the other
window. I did not tell him what I just saw. I did not want him to worry.

When we approached the ward, my dad told my brother and me to close our eyes and hold
his hands. So we did . His warm hands made us feel more secure.
We walked down the hall with our eyes closed. Suddenly we stopped. When we walked
into the room, Father told us to open our eyes. We saw our mother lying on the bed.
Tears welled up in my eyes, but I was not in pain. Right next to my mother was the
most beautiful thing I had ever seen. It was a girl. She was sleeping. She was my
sister. I still remember that day as one of the happiest days of my life.
