Many people read physical books or e-books, but now there is a new trend – listening to
audiobooks (有声读物).
According to a recent report by the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication (CAPP), more
people are choosing to listen to audiobooks these days.
To be specific, 26 percent of adults listened to audiobooks in 2018, which was 3.2 percentage
higher than that in 2017.
Young people have been the main driver in the development of audiobooks. Some 26.2
percent of teenagers listened to audiobooks in 2018, which was 3.5 percent higher than that in
2017. Ximalaya noted that the value of audiobook purchases made by those aged 13 to 18 in 2018
increased by 330 percent over that of 2017, the Beijing Evening News reported.
One of the reasons that audiobooks are becoming increasingly popular is that people want to
get more use out of their free time, China News Service reported. Listening to e-books frees up
time for them, whether they are at the gym, on a bus, or in bed. Faster internet speeds mean that a
book can be downloaded in seconds, according to Wei Yushan, director of CAPP.
Listening to audiobooks also helps with loneliness. “When I feel bored or lonely, listening to
audiobooks makes me feel that there is someone accompanying me,” Zhong Yan, an office worker
who is obsessed with audiobooks, told the Beijing Evening News. However, audiobooks are still far from perfect. “Listening to audiobooks doesn’t make you
think in the way you do when you’re reading a book. It’s also likely that you will miss information
while you listen,” said Zhong.
Qiang Qiang, a primary student who often listens to audiobooks, shares this perspective(观
点): “Despite its convenience, audiobooks are less detailed than physical books you read,” he told
the Beijing Evening News.
Li Yini, assistant general manager of Baicaoyuan Bookstore in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, told
Jiangnan Times that people who want a book with serious content should choose a paper book or
e-book, but they can choose an audiobook if the content is easy to understand.
24. What can we learn from the first four paragraphs?
A. Audiobooks have developed quickly in recent years.
B. Audiobooks are more popular than physical books in China.
C. About half of young people in China listened to audiobooks in 2018.
D. Ximalaya is the first choice when people listen to audiobooks.
25. According to the article, people like to listen to e-books because ______.
A. they are cheaper than paper books
B. they are more convenient
C. they are more relaxing than physical books
D. they provide people with a better reading experience
26. What does the underlined phrase “be obsessed with” mean?
A. Be doubtful about. B. Be interested in.
C. Be concerned about. D. Be disappointed at.
27. What can we learn from Li Yini’s words?
A. Audiobooks are less detailed than physical books.
B. People think differently when they listen to audiobooks.
C. Physical bookstores face a big challenge from audiobooks.
D. People should choose a book form based on its content.

A new study has found that a daytime nap (小睡) taken once or twice a week could lower the
risk from the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland of heart attacks. The study was made
by researchers from the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland.
Having tracked 3, 462 people between the ages of 35 and 75 for over five years, the
researchers made a conclusion. They found those who took occasional napping were 48% less
likely to suffer a heart attack or heart failure than those who did not nap at all. Occasional naps
referred to short sleep during the day, once or twice a week, for between five minutes to an hour.
And no such association (因果关系) appeared for greater napping frequency or duration(持续时
间) of naps.
“Sleep patterns have previously been reported to be connected with many chronic (慢性的)
diseases,” said Stephen MacMahon, an expert at Oxford University’s George Institute for Global
Health, who was not involved in the study. “Some, but not all these associations will reflect the
effects of underlying (潜在的) diseases on sleep rather than the effects of sleep patterns on health.
It's often difficult to tell which is cause and effect.”Naveed Sattar, a professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow, said the study
was “somewhat interesting”. He agreed that those who napped once or twice a week had healthier
or organized lifestyles, and that those who napped daily were more likely to be sick.
“This means the former pattern of occasional napping is arranged on purpose and the latter
pattern of regular napping possibly represents hidden illness linked to poorer lifestyle like staying
up late. And unhealthy lifestyle will increase the risk of various diseases.” Sattar said.
“Napping once or twice per week may reduce the risk of heart diseases, but that doesn’t mean
it can really improve heart health. So, no one should take for granted ( 想 当 然 地 认 为 ) that
napping is a way to keep their hearts healthy,” he added. “For now, it’s far better to aim for
regular good nights sleep and to follow the health adviser’s advice on good diets and proper
physical activity levels.”
28. How should we nap healthily according to this new study?
A. Have a nap every other day.
B. Never take a nap in daytime.
C. Always nap at a fixed time every afternoon.
D. Nap once or twice a week for 5-60 minutes each.
29. What’s the relation between sleep and disease according to MacMahon?
A. Hidden diseases will lead to bad sleep.
B. A bad sleep habit will cause diseases.
C. The two may have nothing to do with each other.
D. The cause and effect relation between the two is uncertain.
30. What does Sattar intend to say in Paragraphs 4 and 5?
A. He fully agrees to MacMahon’s opinions.
B. Ones nap pattern may reflect one’s lifestyle.
C. The new study is interesting but unbelievable.
D. Napping daily might decrease the risk of illness.
31. What does Sattar suggest we do to keep our hearts healthy?
① Learn more about research on heart health.
② Take regular daytime napping seriously.
③ Do the right amount of exercise.
④ Sleep well every night.
⑤ Keep a healthy diet.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.③④⑤ D.①④⑤

The most delicious memories happen during the holidays.
Among them are my little girls at the church play and the moment they got their first angel
wings; a pink car for dolls that wheeled into the bedroom with a tiny voice saying “Look what
Santa brought me!”; or New Year’s snowmen with bright scarves borrowed from a grandma’s
fragrant drawer (抽屉).
But there is one memory that is a little bittersweet (又苦又甜的).
This story brings to mind a colorful candy dish and a very little boy. The occasion was
sometime between Christmas and New Year when a few candies in a dish brightened up a dull December day.
Wrapped against the chill(寒冷), my then 3-year-old grandson, Justin, and I had dashed (急
奔) from the warmth of my parked car into the building where I had a few work-related tasks to
take care of.
A secretary greeted us as we brushed the snow from our clothes and rubbed our hands to
warm them. Then, with my grandchild clinging(紧挨) to my side, I busied myself, seeing to the
business that had brought us there. But while his hand remained in mine, his eyes moved to the
candy dish sitting nearby.
As we turned to leave, the thoughtful woman behind the desk asked the question all children
wait to hear.
“Honey,” she said, peering over her glasses at Justin. “Would you like a candy cane?”
The boy looked up questioningly, his eyes meeting mine, permission hanging in the air. After
a slight nod from me he hurried over to the candy dish. Without hesitation (犹豫), his fat little
hands grabbed one – and only one – and then he began to make his way back to me.
“Justin!” I said from the doorway, a little loudly as I realized manners had been forgotten.
“What do you say?”
The little boy turned on his heel to return to the candy dish.
“Get Grandma one, too!”
I laughed. The secretary laughed. And even little Justin innocently (天真地) laughed at the
fun we were having.
But in that moment, I saw something about Justin that remained long after the taste of the
candy had disappeared. My grandchild was already a person with a lot of love in his heart.
In the years since, I’ve enjoyed a laugh or two thinking back on that moment.
Really, what could be sweeter?
32. The underlined word “dull” in Paragraph 4 means “______”.
A. boring B. special C. lovely D. scary
33. Why did the author call to her grandson after he took a candy?
A. To get him to come quickly.
B. To remind him to get her one.
C. To remind him to be polite.
D. To tell him off for not asking for permission.
34. Which word can best describe the author’s grandson?
A. Funny B. Caring C. Annoying D. Selfish
35. The author wrote this article mainly to ______.
A. stress the importance of good manners
B. show how to get along with kids
C. show how kind the secretary was to the kid
D. share a sweet memory of her grandson
