The aim is to enlarge our reading horizon by sharing good books and helps to appriciate our own culture as well. Many of my classmates have taken an active part and recommended for me many fantastic classical Chinese books. I share with a book named The Journey to the West (Chinese pinyin as Xiyouji), which is listed in the Four Great Chinese Classical Novels. The adventures in the book are described in a fascinating style, so it has been translated in many languages, English of course included. Could you recommend some good books to me as well? Looking forward to your reply. And I’d be really thankful. Yours, Li Hua 附:听力原文 Text 1 M: I can’t believe the news today. It reports that my favourite physicist Yu Min died yesterday at the age of 93. W: Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. He put a lot of effort into his work which was top secret at that time. Text 2 W: So what did you buy downtown today? M: A jacket. It was a real bargain. I got it half price, saving 50 dollars. Now I’ve some money left for a book. Text 3 W: You are 20 minutes late for the meeting, Tom. Why don’t you take a taxi or the underground? M: Well, I’ve got a Student Bus Card and it only costs $2 to get here. Text 4 W: I'm really tired from packing all these boxes for three hours. It's about time to call it a day. M: I know. Maybe we could do it first thing tomorrow morning. W: Why not? These orders are not urgent. Text 5 W: What a mess! I have never seen such an art exhibition. It can’t be worse. M: I beg to differ, Julia. I think it’s much better than the one we saw last time.Text 6 M: Sophia, I’ve just confirmed our flight online, and it looks like we’ll be delayed by an hour. The flight is now scheduled to leave at 4:00 due to the heavy wind. W: Then we’re in trouble. We won’t be able to get to Chicago by 6:00 for the dinner with Mr. O’Neil. M: Don’t worry. I’ll talk to him. I’m going to call him to speak about our report. W: Don’t forget to apologize to him about being late. Text 7 M: My history professor says I should think about a job in politics. But I don’t think I’d make a good politician. W: Why not? M: You know me. I’m not good at dealing with people. And politicians have to work with people all the time. W: That’s true. So what do you think you want to do? M: I think I will be a good artist. I love painting pictures. W: That reminds me of a problem I’m having. You know my parents have a restaurant, right? They want me to be the manager. M: And you want to? W: No way. A restaurant manager has to manage other people. It’d be terrible. I’m too disorganized. Honestly, I want to be a teacher because I like working with kids, and I’m good at it. M: That’s true. text8 W: Dad, look at this form. A teacher gave it to me. M: Let’s finish it together? W: Just a moment. I’ll get a pen from my desk. OK. M: Well, the first question, how often do you call your friends? W: My friends aren’t in the same high school as me. And I dislike ringing people up. M: Secondly, how many friends can you talk with to calm yourself down when you are very upset? W: Oh, I can’t think of any. I usually talk with you or Mum when I feel sad. M: The last question, if your friend wants to talk with you face to face, where would you have the talk? W: Well, we can’t talk in the classroom. Maybe I should meet her in a cafe or a restaurant? No, I think I would talk to her in a shopping centre. We can talk and shop at the same time. M: Let’s see how many points you’ve got. Oh, Mary, you’ve only got 8! Why not call or visit them often? Text 9 M: Being away from home for college can be stressful. Besides all the pressures of study, there's the pressure on your pocket. Today, let's go to a university to find out. Excuse me. Can I ask you a few questions? W: Well, Okay.M: How do you find the cost of living in the city? W: Everything is expensive, including clothing, housing, and traveling. M: So, what do you spend most on? W: Transport, I think. For food, if I cook myself, it's not expensive at all. For clothing, I bring my clothes here from my home country, where they're nice and cheap. But every week, I have to spend more than 100 pounds on the trains. M: Then what's the social life like? W: I'm a very social person. I love hanging out with my friends and meeting new people. Thankfully, I don't drink nor smoke, so the only expense is maybe tickets to the cinemas and so on. Text 10 M: Costa Rica, a small country located in Central America, is quickly gaining a good reputation for being one of the most family-friendly travel destinations in the world. Rather than leaving their kids behind, parents come to Costa Rica with their kids because the country offers many chances that both parents and children will enjoy. Costa Rica has a well-developed travel industry, so even travelers who don’t speak Spanish will find it easy to get around. Vacationers will discover white sand beaches, tropical fish, and places for the kids to check out animals like monkeys which might be liked by children. For an exciting hike, the family can climb up one of the country’s active volcanoes. Last but not least, Costa Rica is easy on the budget! Because the dollar is still strong in Latin America, families can have an amazing Costa Rican experience for about half the cost of a trip to Disneyland. They will find nice hotels for every budget. For 185 dollars per night, families can stay at an ocean-side hotel that has water slides and a butterfly garden. For a cheaper alternative, 80 dollars per night will get you a nice, cozy room in a hotel with hiking trails nearby and friendly staff available 24 hours a day. Planning your next vacation soon? Consider Costa Rica!
