In the U. S., people usually have different types of shoes for different purposes. We wear shoes for style, warmth, and to help us work and play. But in some countries, shoes are a sign of education, a way to show respect, and more.
According to Mr. Dikhayuko Sen, who is from Cambodia, “The purpose of taking off shoes in Cambodia is
normally to show respect to the old people. In the tropical climate, workers used to take a nap in the
afternoon. They needed placidity in their wooden houses. Mostly people, who used to wear wooden shoes and made noise when they walked on the floor took off their shoes."
Mr. Sen, who spent much time outside Cambodia to study in France and to work as a Cambodian (career diplomat (外交官),does not expect everyone to take off their shoes in his house in the United States. " Taking into account the way of life in different (countries in the world, we should be more flexible," he added. “My family and I are happy to receive people in our house whether they wear or take off their shoes. Good hosts always make their guests feel comfortable, " he said.
Mr. Joseph Bellino, who used to be a teacher in Sierra Leone, West Africa, said," One of the punishments that the principal at my school used to give was making a student take off his shoes in school for a day. Because shoes are worn by the educated people, when students have to walk with their bare feet, they feel very ashamed. " Augusta Vandy, a junior came from Sierra Leone added to this, “Most of the students, especially from the villages, don't want to take off their shoes at school because they want to act like the people from the modem cities."
Taking off shoes is also important in religious customs. For example in Ethiopia, the Orthodox people don't wear their shoes when they enter a church. In a similar way, Muslim people also take off their shoes when they enter a Mosque.
24. What does the underlined word " placidity" in Paragraph 2 mean?

The Madagascar pochard, the world’s rarest duck, has been saved from extinction (灭绝) after being raised in Madagascar in the first ever floating cages made from Scottish fish-farming cages. Over the last few years, around 100 of them were bred ( 饲养)on the island just off
Mozambique.
Nigel Jarrett, head of conservation breeding at the WWT, said, “It takes a village to raise a child, as the old African proverb goes, but in this case it has taken a village to raise a duck. We have been preparing for this moment for over a decade. The logistics of working in a remote part of Madagascar——where access to the lakes by vehicle is only possible for three months a year—have been an enormous (challenge, requiring us to come up with novel approaches." u Working with local communities to solve the issues which were driving this bird to extinction has been essential to giving the pochard a chance of survival. If we can make this work, it will provide a powerful example not just of how to save the planet's most threatened species but how communities can manage an ecosystem to benefit people and wildlife, especially in areas of significant poverty," he added.
The pochard was thought to have become extinct until it was rediscovered by American wildlife experts from The Peregrine Fund in 2006. After three years teams from the UK organizations went over to Madagascar and helped raise some of the birds in captivity(困住)using a box and a Tupperware container as a "lake". However, those birds that were hatched without siblings were given a rolled-up sock to keep them company and serve as a “best friend". Madagascar pochards spend almost all their time on water and, importantly, feed underwater. For this reason, a plan was come up with to (change Scottish fish-farming eages into the world’s first floating cages. After successful trials in 2017, the (eages were shipped from the UK to Madagascar and assembled on Lake Sofia this summer.

C. They raised pochards in floating eages on water.
D. They shipped pochards from Madagascar to the UK.
31. Where is this text most likely from?

Now, a new study led by Mason, a behavioral biologist at the University of Guelph in Canada, shows that people who can consistently read cats, expressions belong to a special group: That of the cat whisperer, mostly young and female.
For the research, Mason and his colleagues cheated an online survey and invited Internet users to take part. The 6,329 participants from 85 countries watched between 2 to 20 short videos of cats, expressions, and then responded if they thought the cats were di stressed or happy. These random users got an average of 11.85 out of 20 ratings correct— better than chance, but not by much. But about 13 percent of the survey takers were unusually skilled at reading cats' emotions, scoring at least 15 out of 20 correct—the so-called cat whisperers. Those who self-reported being young, female, and having professional veterinary (MEW) experience were most likely to score well. Surprisingly to Mason, cat ownership had no impact on the ability to interpret cat emotion.
“In humans, facial expressions are a major—if underappreciated—form of human communication, " says Mason. " And recent research shows that a variety of animals, from rats to dogs to horses, also make facial expressions that (dearly communicate how they're feeling," she says. A study published earlier this year found that cats were no exception, while also suggesting that humans could comprehend subtle (微妙的) forms of cat communication, especially facial expressions.
Mikel Delgado, a cat-behavior expert, says that this study is a "great start" to cracking cat communication, but cautions against identifying a cat’s emotional state based on one piece of information. “There’s still a lot for us to understand about cats, body language," says Delgado. For instance, tail and ear position are also relevant signals to how a cat is feeling.
32. What do we know about the cat whisperers?
A. They often go into profession related to animals.
B. They are good at understanding cats’ feelings.
C. They like making videos of cats’ expressions.
D. They are most likely to own and raise cats.
33. What does the author mean by “cats were no exception" in Paragraph 3?
A. Cats share a variety of characteristics with rats and dogs.
B. Cats can make out facial expressions like human beings.
C. Cats take an interest in communicating with other animals.
D. Cats can convey their feelings through facial expressions.
34. What can we infer from Mikel Delgado's words?
A. We should be very cautious when we deal with cats.
B. Cats have better communication skills than other animals.
C. We shouldn't tell cats’ feelings only through their facial expressions.
D. Cats are used to showing how they feel through their body language.
35. What is the authors purpose in writing the text?
A. To convince people of benefits of keeping pets.
B. To introduce a study of reading cats’ expressions.
C. To compare cats’ and human's facial expressions.
D. To clarify some misconceptions about communication.

Empathy, or understanding the feelings of others, is helpful in both personal relationships and the workplace. 36 Here are four ways you can start becoming more empathetic starting today. Start small, and do only one of these at a time and see how you feel.
37 When someone tells you a personal problem, chances are that they don't feel well and need your emotional support. “Is there anything I can do for you?" is a great way to show support. If you are close friends, offering to talk on the phone or meet up can make a big difference to them.
Come from a place of real curiosity. Part of showing empathy is being interested in other people. 38 Instead of just talking about the weather, food or work, ask them about their big challenge in life right now. Get curious. Ask them to tell you more. You're not there to solve their problem or to even give them advice. You're there to be a curious and active listener.
Put yourself in the person's shoes. It's easy for us to (comment and judge. We can say “This is no big deal" or “I don't see why you feel this way. " However, put yourself in the person's shoes and walk a mile. Maybe they are undergoing great pain and difficulty. Imagine going through this problem right now, and try to understand things from their perspective (角度).39 .
Treat the person as being important. To show empathy, you need to treat them like they're the most important person in the room. Leave any distractions at the door because you won't need them. 40 This is the only way they 11 feel comfortable to open up to you. Plus, it shows you don't act superior to them.
A. Show care and concern.
B. Conveying empathy is a skill that can be learned.
C. This will allow you to connect with how they feel better.
D. Right now, you need to give your (complete attention to them.
E. Practice real curiosity next time you connect with another person.
F. You should make them feel curious about what you're talking about.
