There is an old Chinese proverb that states ―One generation plants the trees; another gets the
shade,‖ and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a
mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship.
However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a
friendship. These characteristics include a hierarchy (等级) of responsibilities and unconditional
love, which preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends.
Marina, 27 years old, said, ―I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my
best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they
carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friend: don’t tell you how wise they are because
they have been alive at least 20 years longer than you.‖ This doesn’t mean that the mother and
daughter relationship can’t be very close and satisfying.
While some adult relationships are still troubled, many find them to be extremely rewarding. This
generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood of
shared companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of
being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions.
Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of the workforce and
technology, which may bring them even closer together.
Best friends may or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse, the mother and
daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. The
mother and child relationship is closer than any other. There is not an equal relationship.
Daughters should not feel responsible for their mother’s emotional well-being. It isn’t that they
don’t care deeply about their mothers. It’s just that they shouldn’t be burdened with their mother’s
well-being.
The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other.
Mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters
and often feeling responsible for their happiness. Mothers always ―trump (胜过)‖ friends.
24.What does the underlined word ―preclude‖ in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Differ. B.Prevent.
C.Benefit. D.Change.
25.What do we know from the text?
A.The mother and daughter relationship can be replaced by a best friend.
B.A mother’s love brings her and her daughter a close friendship.
C.The mother and daughter relationship goes beyond best friends’ friendship.
D.Marina has a troubled relationship with her mother.
26.How does the author mainly prove his statements?
A.By listing data. B.By giving explanations.

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking
home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week
away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank
and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both
acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running,
both to keep warm and to keep away any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a
few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to
see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still,
the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment
building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling
to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the
noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to
be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to
me. When a voice called from the inside, ―Alisa Camacho?‖ I thought I was dreaming. How could
this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an
amused look in his eyes. ―Is this what you’re looking for?‖ he asked, holding up a small square
shape.
It was nearly 3 a. m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had got
my wallet back. I also had got back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn’t be
a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

Making employees feel happy and healthy at work is good for many businesses. But it isn’t
always an easy thing. A study suggests that only 33% of the U. S. employees consider themselves
fully engaged (投身于)in work, while 16% are greatly disengaged, and 51% are just showing up.
But there is an exception. When it comes to employee engagement, it seems that employees in
small companies are doing better. According to the same research, the largest U. S. companies are
at the lowest levels of engagement, while companies with fewer than 25 employees are at the 高三综合模拟考试英语试卷 第 5 页(共 8 页)
highest. And in one recent report, 75% of small business workers surveyed said they were ―very‖
or ―extremely‖ satisfied with their role as a small company employee.
Unlike big companies, small companies are often short of resources but the employees can get
more surprises there. Small companies offer excellent career opportunities to their employees. The
bosses often know their staff very well and understand their personal needs. Employees of small
companies are more likely to receive free meals, paid leave, and they can even bring their pets to
work.
But of course ? there are many other draws in small businesses. One of the top draws is flexible
scheduling (弹性工时). Another is being able to really see the fruits of one's labor. Besides,
non-cash award is also a big draw. This could be something small that reflects employees’
interests and lifestyles.
While a parental leave might lead to some financial problems, small companies may do something
to improve it. ―It may be impossible for a five-person team to be reduced to four for six months,‖
writes Camillia Velasquez, head of HR management platform, Justworks. ―But it could be possible
to allow new parents to take on reduced hours in a work-from-home environment. ‖ This kind of
method has been realized in some small companies.
32.What can we know about employees in big and small companies?
A.Employees can develop better in small companies.
B.Employees can earn more money in small companies.
C.Employees in big companies are hard to be satisfied.
D.Employees in small companies are more engaged in work.
33.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.Working for small companies has many benefits.
B.All the employers in small companies know every staff member very well.
C.Staff in small companies may face many challenges.
D.Staff in big companies have more material benefits.
34.Compared with big companies, what is the advantage of small companies?
A.Employers in small companies have more choices.
B.Small companies have more attractions to employees.
C.Employees of small companies may have higher salaries.
D.Employees of small companies have fixed working time.
35.What can be most probably inferred from the passage?
A.Small companies may have more employees with much happiness.
B.Big companies should learn from some small companies.
C.Employees should have their own hobbies and lifestyles.
D.Employers should pay more attention to the staff’s needs.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
When your pet is sick, you know it needs medication. But pets, like babies, don’t know the pill
you want them to take will help them. 36 Here are some tips to help get your pet to take liquid
medicine.
37 If the answer is yes, then your easiest path is to mix it with canned food. First give your
hungry pet a small amount of canned food without the medication. It’s important that the pet
nibbles (啃) at the food and sees that there's nothing wrong.
Next, while the pet is still hungry, mix the medication in a small amount of food and present it.
Repeat as necessary to get the entire dose (剂量) down. 38 If the pet decides not to finish the
meal, the dose will be wasted.
If the chemist says the medication cannot be taken with food, you need a syringe (注射器) or a
dropper to get the liquid down your pet’s throat.
39 Keep a cheerful tone in your voice so the pet doesn’t sense your stress or hesitation.
Position your pet where it cannot run away, perhaps having a dog sit with his back against a wall
or chair – or a cat on your lap.
40 Use your other hand to insert the syringe or dropper between the cheek and back teeth.
Slowly squeeze the medication so the pet won’t choke. Try to keep your pet’s mouth closed for
about 30 seconds until you see it has swallowed. If your pet is being obstinate (倔强的) , stroke its 高三综合模拟考试英语试卷 第 6 页(共 8 页)
throat gently or blow on the face.
Be sure you end the process with praise and perhaps a treat so your pet will not associate
medication with a bad experience.
A.Before you call your pet in, be sure to have the medication and any other materials you’ll need
ready.
B.Once the pet is in position, use one hand to gently open the pet’s mouth from above, tilting back
the head slightly.
C.Ask the vet if the liquid medication can be given with food.
D.You should know the reason why the pet refuses to take medicine.
E. Never mix the medication with the full meal.
F. They just know it smells funny and they don’t want it.
G. Don’t force your pet to swallow all the medicine.

第一节:完形填空(共 20 小题;每小题 1.5 分,满分 30 分)

I come from one of those families where you have to yell at the dinner table to get in a word.
Everyone has a strong 41 , and talks at the same time, and no one has a 42 leading
to heated arguments. We often talk or even debate with each other on different topics. 43 a
family like mine has made me more 44 about the world around me, making me tend to
question anything anyone tells me. But it has also made me realize that I’m not a good listener.
And when I say ―listening‖, I’m not 45 to the nodding-your-head-and- 46
-answering-Uh-huh-or-Ooh-I-see variety. I mean the kind of listening where you find yourself
deeply 47 with the person you’re speaking with, when his story becomes so 48
that your world becomes less about you and more about him. No, I was never very good at that.
I spent summer in South Africa two years ago. I worked for a good non-profit 49
called Noah, which works 50 on behalf of children affected by AIDS. But 51 you
asked me what I really did in South Africa, I’d tell you one thing: I listened, and I listened.
Sometimes I 52 , but mostly listened.
And had I not spent two months 53 , I might have missed the 54 moment
when a quiet little girl at one of Noah’s community centers, orphaned(孤儿)at the age of three,
whispered after a long 55 , ―I love you.‖
56 that summer, I knew how to hear. I could sit down with anyone and hear their
57 and nod and respond at the 58 time—but most of the time I was 59 about
the next words out of my own mouth. Ever since my summer in South Africa, I have noticed that
it’s in those moments when my mouth is closed and my 60 is wide open that I’ve learned
the most about other people, and perhaps about myself.
