B Clara Barton, born on Christmas in 1821, is widely known as one of the most honored women in American history. She began teaching school when most teachers were men at that time. Later, she became one of the first women ever to be employed by the government. Her career in helping the sick began when her brother David became her first patient. He fell down from the roof of a house when Clara was just 11 years old. She stayed by his side and looked after him for three years, learning how to give him all his medicines. When the Civil War began in 1861, she immediately recognized that the poorly equipped soldiers needed help. Instead of waiting for others to step in, Clara collected necessary things on her own, asked the public for donations and learned how to store and distribute them to soldiers. She also read to the soldiers and wrote letters for them. After the Battle of Cedar Mountain in northern Virginia in 1862, Clara arrived at a field hospital at midnight with a vehicle full of supplies. A doctor named Paul Smith at that hospital would later write, “I thought heaven had sent out an angel that night — her assistance arrived at exactly the right time.” In 1869, Clara went to Europe and learned about the International Committee of the Red Cross. Upon her return to the United States, she successfully founded the American Red Cross. She led the organization for the next 23 years. Her last field mission ( 使命) as president of the American Red Cross was to help the victims of the 1900 Galveston hurricane. She did not retire from the American Red Cross until she was 83. True to her nature, Clara always went to where the need was the greatest. Today, the American Red Cross continues the mission Clara started more than 100 years ago. With the help of thousands of volunteers, the American Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters, as well as helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to all sorts of emergencies. 24. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that Clara Barton was _____. A. honest B. caring C. talented D. modest 25. After the Civil War broke out, Clara Barton _____. A. joined the army and fought bravely B. went to Europe for further study C. continued to work as a teacher D. did a lot to help soldiers 26. Seeing Clara Barton’s arrival, Dr. Smith must have felt _____. A. excited and grateful B. proud and joyful C. shy and nervous D. sad and sorry 27. What is mainly described in Paragraph 5? A. The aim of the American Red Cross. B. The importance of voluntary donations. C. Clara Barton and the American Red Cross. D. Clara Barton’s contribution to the Civil War. C Being able to count at least ten people as friends makes us happy, but those with five or fewer are likely to be miserable, researchers say. Their study of hundreds of men and women also found that people who feel satisfied with their lives always have lots of close friends and regularly make new ones. While it is not clear whether our friends make us happy or we make friends because we are happy, the researchers say it is clear that we should maintain our friendships. Psychologist Richard Tunney said, “Whatever the reason is, actively working on friendships in the same way as to maintain a marriage is a prerequisite (必备条件) to happiness.” Dr. Tunney, of Nottingham University, quizzed (询问)more than 1,700 people about their satisfaction with their lives and the state of their friendships. Those with five friends or fewer had just a 40 percent chance of being happy. In other words, they were more likely to be unhappy than happy. Ten was the first number at which people were more likely to be happy than unhappy. The happiest people were those with dozens of friends, according to the study, which was carried out for the National Lottery (彩票). For women, this meant having 33 friends; for men, the number was 49. Dr. Tunney said, “People who were extremely satisfied with their lives had twice the number of friends of people who were extremely dissatisfied.” Women tended to have fewer friends than men but formed tighter relationships. Interestingly, the study found that childhood friends are no more likely to make us happy than people we become close to later in life. Lottery winners, however, have a different opinion on life. They are always happier than others despite spending their time with a small circle of old friends. This could be because they trust people they’ve known for a long time. 28. What’s the best title for this passage? A. The Secret to Happiness Is to Make New Friends. B. Having at Least 10 Good Friends Makes People Happy. C. Why Most People Like to Make Friends Regularly. D. Men’s and Women’s Friends Are Different. 29. Which of the following opinions may Richard Tunney NOT agree with? A. People with few friends are sure to be unhappy. B. Our friends can make us happy. C. Happiness may come from a good marriage life. D. We may become happier if we have more friends. 30. According to the passage, lottery winners ________. A. enjoy making new friends B. make new friends easily C. like staying with old friends D. have no time to make friends 31. We can conclude from the passage that ________. A. it’s enough for one person to have ten friendsB. unhappy people must have few friends C. childhood friends make people happier than adulthood ones D. friendships play a major role in people’s life D When nature is left alone, a balance is reached among the animals and plants living in one area. But when man starts his work in nature, the balance is likely to be destroyed. He grows a crop and takes it away to eat; then there are no dead leaves to fall on the ground, holding water while it sinks into the surface, or decaying (腐烂) and adding humus (腐殖质) to the soil. Unless a farmer acts with knowledge and skill, he is therefore most likely to make the land poorer. To take the place of the useful matter in the crops that he removes, he uses some kind of fertilizer (肥料). Chemical fertilizers are of great help, but the waste products of animals and decaying remains of plants should also be put on the land. In some places, it is a habit to burn waste material lying about, but such burning destroys the useful matter in the dead plants. Although the ashes that are left are valuable when put on the land, a better practice is to bury the waste so that it decays and increases the humus in the soil. In the past, when the world population was much lower than it is now, a man had little difficulty in ordinary times in growing the food that was needed. When a field had been used some years and had become tired, the farmer could move to another place. The tired land then slowly recovered. Gradually grasses and other plants would appear on it and its productive power would slowly return to normal through their decay. But nature, left alone, would take a long time to bring back the land to its former state; the length of time required would depend on local conditions, but it might well be ten years. It is a bad practice to grow the same crop in a field year after year. If the crop is changed, the land will suffer less because it is treated and used in a different way. Different plants have different effects on the soil. Therefore, a change of crop will do less harm than the growing of the same crop year after year and a regular change to grass will do good to the soil. Much will therefore be gained if different crops are grown one after another, a method known as the rotation (轮作) of crops. 32.According to the passage, the land will become poorer_______.A. if all the dead leaves are cleared away B. if the humus is increased after the harvest C. if dead leaves decay in the soil by themselves D. if waste plant material lying about is buried 33.We can learn from the passage that the tired land has gradually recovered________. A. when grasses and other plants appear again B. when the treatment is given by nature alone C. after new grasses and other plants have decayed again D. after nature has been left alone for several months 34.A modern farmer can hardly move to another place as he did before because________. A. the productive power of a new field isn’t higher than that of an old one B. there are few free fields left for him to do farming C. it takes a farmer more than ten years to start farming in a new field D. there will be too many grasses in a new field to grow crops 35.It is most likely that the author will go on to ______ in the paragraph following the passage above. A. introduce other methods of planting crops B. deal with how to prevent land getting tired C. start another topic of how to make use of land D. further explain what the rotation of crops is 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 Most of today’s Chinese Americans are the descendants(后代)of some of the early miners and railroad workers.
