"How do you account for your remarkable accomplishment in life?” Queen Victoria
of the UK asked Helen Keller. "How do you explain the fact that even though you were
both blind and deaf you were able to accomplish so much?"
Ms. Keller's answer is a tribute (致敬) to her dedicated teacher. "If it had not been for
Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.”
According to speaker Zig Ziglar, "Little Annie" Sullivan, as she was called when she
was young, was no stranger to hardship. She was almost sightless herself and was, at one
time, diagnosed as hopelessly "insane" by her caregivers. She was locked in the basement
of a mental institution outside of Boston. On occasion, Little Annie would violently attack
anyone who came near. Most of the time she generally ignored everyone in her presence.
An elderly nurse believed there was hope, however, and she made it her mission to show love to the child. Every day she visited Little Annie. For the most part, the child did
not acknowledge the nurse’s presence, but she still continued to visit. The kind woman left
cookies for her and spoke words of love and encouragement. She believed Little Annie
could recover, if only she were shown love.
Eventually, doctors noticed the change in the girl. Where they once witnessed anger and
hatred, they now noted a gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs where she continued
to improve. Then the day finally came when this seemingly "hopeless'' child was released.
Anne Sullivan grew into a young woman with a desire to help others as she herselfwas helped by the kind nurse. It was she who saw the great potential in Helen Keller. She
loved her, disciplined her, played with her, pushed her and worked with her until the
flickering candle that was her life became a beacon of light to the world. Anne Sullivan
worked wonders in Helen's life; but it was a loving nurse who first believed in Little Annie
and lovingly transformed an uncommunicative child into a compassionate teacher.
“If it had not been for Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained
unknown." But if it had not been for a kind and dedicated nurse, the name of Anne Sullivan
would have remained unknown.

We like to think that the human mind is special. One sign of our superiority is
self-awareness, which is generally seen as the peak of consciousness. Only a select group of
species has passed the test of being able to recognise themselves in a mirror. Most, including
elephants, apes and dolphins, are smart. But now a little fish, the cleaner wrasse has become
the first fish ever to pass the mirror test——a classic experiment used to judge self-
awareness in animals. What are we to make of this?
Admittedly the mirror test is a questionable way of probing (探究)the minds of
other animals. But the finding does fit with a new idea that the ability to recognise
oneself is more related to an animal’s lifestyle than to its brain size. Self-awareness is likely
to occur in creatures whose survival is dependent on reading the minds of others. In fact, by
this way of thinking, it is nothing more than an accidental by-product of
evolution^ a simulation (模拟)created by the brain, or even just a hall of mirrors giving the illusion of complexity.
The cleaner wrasse lives on coral reefs and provides a service by biting parasites
(寄 生虫)off the scales of bigger fish gently, a delicate relationship that may require
insight into the minds of its clients. Such “theory of mind” has long been seen as another
cornerstone of human mental superiority. The possibility that fish possess it is
not, however, the only threat to our human exceptionalism (例外).It may not be longbefore computers give us a run for our money , too.
Researchers have created a set of tests to look for theory of mind in artificial
intelligence— and some systems are on the point of passing. No AIs have passed the tests
yet, but one got extremely close. We probably don't need to worry about robots that can
recognise themselves in mirrors. But we might want to be more open to the idea that human
intelligence isn't quite as special as we like to think.
28.What can we learn from the mirror test?
A.Mammals have a more adaptive body system. B.
The human mind is just as special as expected. C.A
species of fish is capable of self-recognition. D.
Humans have reached the peak of consciousness.
29.The underlined part in Paragraph 3 probably means " ”.
A.bring us huge profits
B.challenge our exceptionalism C
.cost us a lot of money D.have
great control over us
30.According to the passage, self-awareness .
A.corresponds with the size of the brain
B.isn't a hall of mirrors but a simulation C.
reflects the typical mental complexity D.is
formed during evolution by chance 31.What' s
the main idea of the passage? A.Humans are
not unique in intelligence. B.Fish possess no
level of intelligence.
C.AIs will be able to understand our thoughts. D.
Self-awareness is a big mystery of the mind.

“Could your weekend lie-in (睡懒觉) kill you?, asked the Daily Mail. It is said in a
study that sleeping more at weekends can increase the risk of heart disease. Since most
of us change our sleep schedule depending on whether it’s a work or non-work day, it’s an
interesting question. Is the lie in really so dangerous? Researchers say that changing sleep
pattern cause social jet lag. Is that even a thing?
Changing our sleeping hours causes the effect of crossing a time zone-it makes us
sleepy the day. People who changed their sleep patterns were also more likely to gain
weight during the study and more suited to going to bed and waking late because of the
change of their biological clock. They were more at risk of these changes than earlier
sleepers and risers. The study also shows an association switching sleep patterns and
changes in some blood results. It does not show that anyone’s developing heart disease was
because they had lie-ins.
Jim Horne, one of the professors of the Sleep Research Center, says the concept of
social jet lag is likely to feed our anxiety about sleep, so we should really stop worrying so
much and have a limited weekend lie-in. Worry is bad for sleep and we naturally
compensate for not getting enough rest in the week by lying-in at weekends, so we
shouldn’t stop doing it. However, we should limit the time.
Studies show that if you accumulate a five-hour sleep debt during the week, then you only need one and a half hours of extra sleep on your days off to make up for it. It would be
a shame to be scared of lie-in. Studies of sleep and risk factors for heart disease can struggle
to tell between poor sleep causing stress and stress disrupting sleep. Sleep is the test for the
state of one’s health, and the most important thing that happenswhen you don’t get enough of it is that you feel sleepy.
32.What’s the consequence of switching sleep patterns? A.
You’ll feel more energetic.
B.Some blood results will change adversely. C.The
chance of putting on weight will enhance. D.You will
become earlier sleepers and risker.
33.What is Horne’s attitude to the weekend lie-in?
A.Negative. B.Supportive. C.Doubtful. D.Ambiguous.
34.What does the underline phrase “doing it” refer to?
A.Worrying. B.Limited Sleeping.
C.Compensating for the limit. D.Lying-in.
35.What can we infer from the text?
A.The sleep debt should be paid off completely. B.The
weekend lie-in is more healthy than harmful. C.Poor
sleep may result from and cause stress in turn.
D.Social jet lag occurs when you don’t get enough sleep.

Personalized Exercise
As the start of every year, many of us promise ourselves that a certain number of times
a week we will go to the gym or attend an exercise class. But finally many of us just
struggle to fit exercise into our lives, or start off well and then give up. Why do we have a
good plan at the beginning and fail to achieve it in the end? How can we deal with the
problem? 36
It is important to determine your motivation first. Are you mainly interested in
de-stressing or in getting fitter? If your goal is relaxation, then ask yourself if you want to
do it energetically. 37 If you have a calmer style, you can do something quite
different. You could choose solitary exercise, such as walking the dog or doing some
gardening. 38 There are quite a lot of them, such as walking and running
groups, dance classes, etc. On your own, you could go horse riding or swimming, or just
download fitness exercise programs and do it at home.
39 If you have free time at the weekend, you could book some time with a
personal trainer, who can come to your house, or you could meet him at the gym. If your life
is not as regular, you could choose the next couple of minutes you have to try an exercise
DVD, or put your running shoes on and run for any length of time.
As you see, everything counts when you are doing exercise. Whatever your lifestyle is,
you will be able to have something that suits you. 40 Just sit down with a
cup of tea, read this article again, and have a think about your options. Then finish the tea,
get up, get going, and don’t stop.
A. Good exercise is necessary for physical health.
B. The key could be to find the right type of exercise.C. If it is fitness you are after, group activities will be suitable.
D. You’d better create a personalized plan to get you into shape.
E. In this case, a type of exercise based on boxing may be right for you.
F. In other words, you can always find personalized exercise by yourself.
G. For people who are extremely busy, it is easier to fit exercise into daily lives.第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分 60 分)

coronavirus and other highly contagious diseases so far. The machine has a long robotic arm
attached to a base with wheels. It can perform some of the same medical examination
tasks 62 doctors. For example, the device can perform ultrasounds, collect fluid samples
from a person’s mouth and listen to sounds made by a patient’s organs.
Cameras record the robot’s activities, which 63 (control) remotely so doctors can
avoid 64 (come) in close contact with infected patients. Doctors and other medical
workers can operate the machine from a nearby room or from much 65 (far) away.
The robot’s main 66 (design) is Zheng Gangtie, an engineer and professor at China’s
Tsinghua University in Beijing. He told Reuters news agency that he got 67 idea for the
device around the time of the Lunar New Year in January. At the time, the number of cases
of the COVID-19 virus was rising quickly in the city of Wuhan. COVID-19 is the
disease caused by the new coronavirus.
Zheng said a friend of his is the head of Beijing’s Tsinghua Changgung Hospital. He said
his friend told him that one of the biggest 68 (problem) in dealing with COVID-19 was
69 healthcare workers treating patients were getting infected themselves. Zheng said he
wanted to do something to help this situation.
So the engineer gathered a team and went to work on the robotic device. Zheng said the

Studies show the new coronavirus can live in the air for several hours and on some
surfaces for as long as two to three days. United States government scientists and other
experts reported Wednesday on tests 71 (involve) the coronavirus. They found that in
addition 72 person-to-person contact, it can spread through the air as well as from 73
(object) that an infected person has touched.
The new virus 74 (infect) more than 120,000 people and caused more than 4,300
deaths around the world up till now. The number of infections and deaths is far 75
(great) than the number during the SARS outbreak in 2003. SARS was caused by a
genetically similar virus.
For the new study, researchers used a device 76 (call) a nebulizer to release particles
of the new virus into the air. This is similar to 77 might happen if an infected person
coughs or breathes out the virus into the air.
The researchers learned that the viral particles could 78 (measure) up to three hours
later in the air, and up to four hours later on copper. They found the particles up to 24 hours
later on a piece of cardboard and up to two to three days later on plastic and stainless
steel.
Scientists noted similar results when they tested the virus 79 caused the SARS
outbreak in 2003. However, the results do not clear up why the new coronavirus is
spreading so much more widely and 80 (easy).第四部分 写作
