In March 2013, on a rainy night, my partner Reece remembered that he had forgotten a box
in his car and went out to get it. On his way back inside he noticed a small shadow moving on the
driveway. As Reece moved towards the shadow he realised it was a young hedgehog (刺猬), all
wet in the grass, eating mud. He quickly removed his Jacket and picked it up. The hedgehog was
very weak and unable to move about quickly. He didn’t seem to be frightened, nor did he resist
(反抗) being lifted.
Once inside, Reece called out to me, saying that he had something that would make my heart
melt—he was right! We named the hedgehog Alf, and this little creature was amazingly intelligent.
Not only did he learn to eat his dinner and drink water from his bowls, and use a paper-covered
mat for his business, but he also learnt to wait for us inside his little indoor house and also jump
into his pet carrier whenever we took him out with us. Alf knows us very well and recognises both
our voices.
Unfortunately, in April 2014 I was caught in a car accident and had to spend two months in
Auckland City Hospital. And I really missed Alf. Reece told me that Alf had been searching
around the house for me, checking in places where I’d normally be, such as my desk, my favourite
seat in front of the TV and even my side of the bed.
One evening, Reece set up a video call for me from my hospital bed and I was extremely
happy when I saw the little guy appear on my mobile phone. When I told Alf that I would be
home soon, he opened up from being in a semi-ball position. He started moving his head and 宁夏六盘山高级中学 2019-2020 学年第二学期高二第一次月考测试卷 第 8 页 共 12 页

We all love watching fireworks, from the flashy shows on the Fourth of July to the Roman
candle burning in the backyard. But let’s stop and think about the price we pay for just a few
minutes of excitement.
First, the amount of money we spend on fireworks is absurd. The excitement is gone, actually,
in a flash. Let’s face it, what we really are doing is burning money. Yet, year after year, thousands
of cities and towns spend our tax dollars on fireworks displays. Those tax dollars would be put to
much better use feeding our hungry and housing our homeless.
Second, there is the matter of pollution. Fireworks contain chemicals that are harmful to
people and animals. Over the years, these chemicals will poison the air we breathe and the water
we drink.
Third, let’s consider the rubbish left behind after a fireworks display. What a mess! One 宁夏六盘山高级中学 2019-2020 学年第二学期高二第一次月考测试卷 第 10 页 共 12

would expect that those who set off the fireworks would pick up the garbage afterwards. But they
don’t. The mess they leave behind reflects the kind of attitude many Americans have toward our第一次月考测试卷 第 6 页 共 12 页

environment.
Fourth, fireworks are dangerous. Some fireworks can damage your hearing, especially the
fireworks used in public displays that give off a big BANG. Losing your hearing is too high a
price to pay.
Despite all the safety warnings, we still see injuries and deaths as a result of fireworks.
Around 10, 000 Americans are injured every year by fireworks. According to the National Council
on Fireworks Safety, children from the ages of five to fourteen are the ones most often injured.
Those sparklers ( 烟花棒) that seem so harmless cause 10% of the injuries. But sparklers run a
distant third after skyrockets (number two) and firecrackers (number one).
In my view, all fireworks for private use should be banned. Public fireworks displays should
be limited and should be paid for through volunteer funding, not tax dollars. Finally, those people
in charge of fireworks displays should be responsible for cleaning up the mess they make.
28. What does the underlined word “absurd” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Considerable.
B. Unreasonable.
C. Limited.
D. Uncounted.
29. Which type of fireworks are the leading cause of injuries?
A. Firecrackers.
B. Skyrockets.
C. Sparklers.
D. Roman candles.
30. What is the author’ s attitude toward public fireworks displays?
A. Unfavorable.
B. Unconcerned.
C. Optimistic.
D. Cautious.
31. Which of the following shows the structure of the text?宁夏六盘山高级中学 2019-2020 学年第二学期高二第一次月考测试卷 第 7 页 共 12 页

Doctors and medical experts are always telling us about the importance of exercise. If we
want to live a long and healthy life, we have to make a commitment to exercise. Some of us
choose to go on regular walks or runs in the park and countryside. Others choose to go to the gym,
where they will surely spend a few minutes running on a treadmill (跑步机). We all know what a
treadmill looks like and what it feels like to use, but you may be surprised at its history.
Long before they were “must-have” pieces of gym equipment, the Romans were using
treadmills to help lift heavy weights. Treadmills were also used on farms and were operated either
by humans or animals. It was not until machinery operated by fossil fuels was invented that the
treadmill in the workplace became redundant (多余的).
In 1818, a man called William Cubitt invented the Everlasting Staircase. It was a system of
stairs, like a treadmill, that could be used in prisons to keep prisoners busy and out of trouble.
Prisoners were made to climb the stairs for up to eight hours each day. Sometimes the energy
created by their physical work was used to pump water or grind (碾) grain. At first prisoners were
able to talk to one another as they used the Everlasting Staircase. This was soon considered to be
too easy. Screens were placed between each prisoner so they could not see or speak to one
another.
William Cubitt’ s machine was used in hundreds of prisons around the world. However, the
prisoners hated it. It was not so much the exercise they disliked, it was not being able to
communicate with anyone else. In 1898, prisons stopped using the Everlasting Staircase. It was
considered to be too cruel.
Later in 1952. Dr. Robert Bruce developed a treadmill that could help diagnose (诊断) heart
and lung disease. In 1968, William Staub invented the Pacemaker 600, the first home-use
treadmill. A whole new industry was born.
32. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To show different forms of exercise.
B. To introduce the topic of the treadmill.
C. To stress the importance of exercise.
D. To explain the function of the treadmill.
33. The treadmills in Roman times were
A. used to raise heavy things.

34. What was the Everlasting Staircase mainly used for in prisons?宁夏六盘山高级中学 2019-2020 学年第二学期高二第一次月考测试卷 第 9 页 共 12 页
A. Helping prisoners with farm work.

Time is on your side
How frequently do you say I don’t have time? Quite often, I guess. Every time we say those
words, they make us feel weak and out of control. You are in control of your hours and your life.
36
I know it’s not as easy as simply turning off the TV. But here are two steps that will help you
take back control and get time on your side.
★ 37 Be honest: do you spend an hour or two visiting Weixin and QQ every day? Are you
spending time with people that you don’t really like just to please them? Are there meetings you
attend that you can politely refuse?
It’s time to get real about the hours that add up to a lot of dissatisfying nothing. Think how
you can cancel daily activities that are not useful. 38
★ Change your language
Words matter. They have power. Saying “ I don’t have time ” is an excuse for not wanting to
do something. Here are some good, empowering alternatives (选择):
“I choose not to start that project until next year.”
“ 39 ”
“I’ d love to go out this weekend but have important work I need to do first.”
Get better at saying no. 40 Use little pockets of time (friend running late, car stuck in
traffic, meeting ending 10 minutes early) to do some productive thinking. All these things can add
up over time more than you believe!宁夏六盘山高级中学 2019-2020 学年第二学期高二第一次月考测试卷 第 10 页 共 12 页

B. Identify your blocks.
C. I really don’ t have enough time to do it.宁夏六盘山高级中学 2019-2020 学年第二学期高二第一次月考测试卷 第 11 页 共 12 页
D. I’ d love to read that book — I’ ll get to it after my homework is complete!
E. But you are likely wasting a lot of it!
F. Take no notice of all those unimportant messages on your phone.
G. When you don’ t have a plan for your life, someone else will plan it for you.
