At the age of seven I started taking violin lessons. I practiced half an
hour every day, went to lessons once a week, and occasionally played in a
group concert. Like most kids, I always thought practicing was boring. If
my parents hadn’t been there to make me practice, I probably would have
英语科试卷 第 ⻚ 共 ⻚2 10put down my violin and never have picked it up again.
I met Moira when I was 11 at an Irish music party. Moira hosted the party that night,
playing the violin, singing and dancing. She made sure that everyone in the room got involved
and had a great time. I immediately fell in love with the music she played and the energy that she
brought to it. Just a few days after that party, I took my first lesson with Moira, and I continued
taking lessons with Moira throughout middle school.
When I started playing the violin with Moira, playing music became something that I loved.
She introduced me to so many types of music, from Irish to Old Time, to Cajun. Moira also
taught me to play the guitar. Soon we started performing together and were shocked to discover
that people actually wanted to hear us! When I began to play the violin, practicing was
something that I did at home in my living room, but with Moira’s influence it quickly became
something that I did everywhere. I played on street corners, at festivals, at the beach, at parties,
at weddings, and late at night in my friends’ kitchens.
Moira took the music out of the classroom and brought it to life. Her passion (激情) was
not only for playing music, but also for sharing it. My time with Moira allowed me to grow both
musically and personally. I have met so many special people and had so many invaluable
experiences. Moira has proven to be the most important influence in my musical development,
and also my invaluable friend.

23. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Moira didn’t like to play music in the classroom.
B. Moira helped the writer a lot with her personal life.
C. Moira had great influence on the writer’s life.
D. Moira was very thankful for the writer's support.
24. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. My Way to Success.
B. My Invaluable Friend.
C. My Middle School Life.

Food festivals around the world
Stilton Cheese Rolling
May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must
be the only people in the world who include these rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four,
dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course.
英语科试卷 第 ⻚ 共 ⻚3 10On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors’ lane.
Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos
(disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the
competitors arc served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.
Fiery Foods Festival — The Hottest Festival on Earth.
Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They
come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common
addiction — food that is not just spicy, but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin
and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Eood and BBQ Festival which is held over a
period of three clays every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper —
officially the hottest pepper in the world — or any one of the thousands of products that are on
show. But one thing’s for sure — if you don’t like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival
isn’t for you!
La Tomatina — The World’s Biggest Food Fight
On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts Ea Tomatina —
the world’s largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as
the highlight of the week’s events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with
tomatoes — official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd.
The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of
tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then
everyone heads down to the river to make friends again — and for a much-needed wash!
25. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must .
A. wear various formal clothes
B. roll a wooden cheese in their own lane
C. kick or throw their cheese
D. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos
26. Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held?

Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume
rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style
and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers conclude that the French tend to stop
eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their
favourite TV show is over.
According to Dr Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part
of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while
英语科试卷 第 ⻚ 共 ⻚4 10Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola
believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long
after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge
supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop
daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits,
vegetables, and eggs as well as highquality meats for each meal.
After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get
Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how
to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.
In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be
affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity — or extreme overweight — among
adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older
traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% — and is growing.
29. In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr Joseph Mercola?
A. They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently.
B. They squeeze eating between the other daily activities.
C. They regard eating as a key part of their life style.
D. They usually eat too much canned and frozen food.
30. This text is mainly the relationship between ________.
A. Americans and the French
B. life style and obesity
C. children and adults
D. fast food and overweight
31. The text is mainly developed ________.
A. by contrast (对⽐) B. by space
C. by process D. by classification (分类)

Businesses are witnessing a difficult time, which has in turn produced influence on
consumers’ desire to go green. However, shoppers are still laying stress on environmental
concerns.
Two thirds of customers say that environmental considerations inform their purchases to the
same degree as they did a year ago, while more than a quarter say that they are now even better
aware of the environmental effect on what they buy.
This may help to influence how shops store goods on their shelves. And the companies
should still make efforts to become more environmentally friendly. Two out of three people think
it is important to buy from environmentally responsible companies, with about one in seven
saying that they had even decided to take their custom elsewhere if they felt a company’s
environmental reputation was not good enough.
Harry Morrison, chief executive(主管)of the Carbon Trust, sympathizes:“I understand
this situation where survival is very important now. But from environmental considerations, the
clock is ticking—we don’t have much time. In addition, cutting carbon has an immediate effect
as costs drop and a medium-term benefit for the brand.”
Larger companies have an extra motivation to look at reducing their carbon footprint, as
new rules next year will require businesses to buy carbon allowances to make up for their
英语科试卷 第 ⻚ 共 ⻚5 10emissions(排放). Those that have taken early action will have a head start. More than two
thirds of consumers are not clear about which companies are environmentally responsible. This
suggests that firms that are able to relay clearly their message to the public will be in a pole
position to attract shoppers.
The Carbon Trust believes that it can help by informing customers about the good work
companies are doing. “When companies are granted(授予)the standard, they can use a
logo(标识)in all their marketing which makes it clear that they are working towards cutting
emissions,” Mr. Morrison said.
32. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Businesses are finding ways to send their message to the shoppers.
B. Companies will soon get information about cutting carbon emissions.
C. Firms are making efforts to encourage customers to keep goods at home.
D. Firms are urged to cut carbon emissions by shoppers’ environmental awareness.
33. The underlined word “inform” in Paragraph 2 probably means“ ”.
A.affect B.change C.disturb D.reject
34. According to Harry Morrison, businesses .
A. will benefit from cutting carbon emissions
B. should buy carbon allowances for shoppers
C. are required to make up for their carbon emissions
D. have encouraged shoppers to take their custom elsewhere
35. We can learn from the passage that businesses will .
A. have a strong desire to reduce costs
B. use the same logo in their marketing
C. gain advantages by taking early action
D. attract more shoppers by storing goods

Why Do We Find It Hard to Say “No”?
As we all know, saying “no” to others is not easy at all. But sometimes we have to learn to
say “no”. 36 Below are common reasons why people find it hard to say “no”:
● 37 You are a kind soul at heart. You don’t want to turn the person away and you want to
help when possible, even if it may eat into your time.
●Afraid of being rude. I was brought up under the idea that saying “no”, especially to
people who are older, is rude. This thinking is common in Asian culture, where face saving is
important. 38
●Wanting to be agreeable. You don't want to alienate (疏远) yourself from the group
because you’re not in agreement. So you agree to others’ requests.
●Fear of conflict (冲突). 39 This might lead to an ugly confrontation (⾯对). Even if
there isn’t, there might be disagreement which might lead to bad effects in the future.
● 40 Perhaps you are worried saying “no” means closing doors. For example, one of my
friends’ wives was asked to work in another department in her company. Since she liked her
team, she didn’t want to go. However, she didn’t want to say “no” as she felt it would affect her
promotion (晋升) chances in the future.
英语科试卷 第 ⻚ 共 ⻚6 10A. Fear of losing chances.
B. Wanting to help others.
C. Wanting to keep a good relationship.
D. I slowly realised I needed to learn to say “no”.
E. It means not making others look bad or lose face.
F. You are afraid the person might be angry if you refuse him/her.
G. To learn to say “no”, we have to first understand what’s stopping us from it.

One of the easiest things in the world is to become a fault-finder. However, life can be
41 when you are not busy finding fault with it.
Several years ago I 42 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a
world-class fault-finder, almost always 43 by things. People were always doing things that
annoyed her, and 44 was ever good enough. She was highly self-critical and also found fault
with her friends. She became a really 45 person.
Unfortunately, it took a horrible accident to change her 46 Her best friend was seriously
hurt in a car crash. What made it almost 47 to deal with was that the day before the 48 ,
Kerry had visited her friend and had spent the whole time criticizing her 49 of boyfriends,
the way she was living, the way she related to her mother, and various other things she felt she
needed to 50 . It wasn't until her friend was badly hurt that Kerry became 51 her habit of
finding fault. Very quickly, she learned to appreciate life rather than to 52 everything so
harshly ( 刻薄). She was able to transfer her new wisdom to other parts of her 53 as well.
Perhaps most of us aren’t as extreme at fault-finding, 54 when we’re honest, we can be
sharply 55 of the world. I’m not suggesting you 56 problems, or that you pretend things
are 57 than they are, but simply that you learn to allow things to be as they are — 58
most of the time, and especially when it’s not a really big 59 .
Train yourself to “bite your tongue”, and with a little 60 , you’ll get really good at letting
things go. And when you do, you’ll get back your enthusiasm and love for life.
