Ask Dr?Jeffers This month Dr. Jeffers is answering questions about the
human brain and how it works.
Dear Dr. Jeffers,
One of my colleagues, Felix Moeller, told me that scientists are learning to
use computer to “read minds”. Is there any truth to this story?
—Jane Leon, New York, USA
Dear Ms. Leon,
Well, a lot of research is being conducted in this area, but so far, the brain
scanning equipment and corresponding computer programs haven't been able to
actually read thoughts. In one experiment, test subjects (受试者) were connected
to scanning equipment and shown two numbers on a screen. They were then as
ked to choose between adding or subtracting(减) the two numbers. Using this
method, researchers were able to follow brain processes and make the correct
assumptions(假设) 70 percent of the time. It's not quite mind reading, but it's
certainly a first step.

Dear Dr. Jeffers,
My three-year-old son loves it when I dig my fingers into his sides and
tickle (胳肢) him until he laughs uncontrollably. The other day I noticed him
trying to tickle himself but he couldn't do it. Why not?
—Glenn Lewis, Vancouver, Canada
Dear Mr. Lewis,
It's because of how the brain works. The brain is trained to know what to
pay attention to and what to ignore. It causes us to ignore physical feelings we
expect to happen, but it causes a mild panic reaction when there is an
unexpected feeling. For example, you don't notice how your shoulder feels while
you're walking down the street. But if someone comes up behind you and
touches you lightly on the shoulder, you may jump in fear. It's that unexpected
part that causes the tickle reaction.
—Dr. J.

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in
distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology呼和浩特第一中学 2019~2020 学年第二学期高二英语第一次月考练

explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning
evenly(均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
"We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read
facial expressions," Jack said. "Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal
measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect (忽略) the mouth. "
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human
communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial
expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably
convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions
by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while
they observed pictures of. expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad,
surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately
participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made
significantly more errors than did Westerners. "The cultural difference in eye movements
that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions," Jack
said. "Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion,
Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less. "
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human
emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social
skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to
communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves

When you’re lying on the white sands of the Mexican Riviera, the stresses of the
world seem a million miles away. Hey, stop! This is no vacation — you have to finish
something!
Here lies the problem for travel writer and food critic (评 论家 ) Edie Jarolim. “I
always loved travelling and always liked to eat, but it never occurred to me that I could
make money doing both of those things.” Jarolim said. Now you can read her travel呼和浩特第一中学 2019~2020 学年第二学期高二英语第一次月考练

Her job in travel writing began some eight years ago. After getting a PhD in English
in Canada, she took a test for Frommer’s travel guides, passed it, and got the job. After
working at Frommer’s, Jarolim worked for a while at Rough Guides in London, then
Fodor’s, where she fell so in love with a description of the Southwest of the U.S. that she
moved there.
Now as a travel writer, she spends one-third of her year on the road. The rest of the
time is spent completing her tasks and writing reviews of restaurants at home in Tueson,
Arizona.
As adventurous as the job sounds, the hard part is fact-checking all the information.
Sure, it’s great to write about a tourist attraction, but you’d better get the local museum
hours correct or you could really ruin someone’s vacation.

9. What is most difficult for Jarolim?
A. Working in different places to collect information.

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train
passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to
complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole
families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were
their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on
a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen
magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I
sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore
Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of
people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of
rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight,
immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste
basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains
seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was
looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked
at my watch and was surprised that it was 3: 00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at
Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my
uncle waved with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug. I had
never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up呼和浩特第一中学 2019~2020 学年第二学期高二英语第一次月考练

A. The mountains along the way. B. The friendly country people.
C. The crowds of people in the streets. D. The simple lunch served on the train.

Muzak
The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do
you hear? 16 It's similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same. That's
because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy.
Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.
Quiet background music used to be called“elevator (电梯) music”because we often
heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new
name“Muzak”. About one-third of the people in America listen to“Muzak”every day.
The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more呼和浩特第一中学 2019~2020 学年第二学期高二英语第一次月考练

lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon,
when people are more tired. 17
If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of
the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as Muzak, but
others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? 18
Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less
lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak does what it
is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the
pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. 19 Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent
more groceries.
20 They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy
hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or
another, Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when
they hear Muzak!
A. Some people don't like Muzak.
B. The music gives them extra energy.
C. Music is playing in the background.
D. Factory workers produce 13 percent more.
E. Muzak tends to help people understand music better.
F. They get as much as $4 million a year if their songs are used.
G. Muzak is played in most of the big supermarkets in the world.
