Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. For five days in a row, the people read either a paper book or an iPad for four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, the people took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin (褪黑激素) was in their blood at any given time. When subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. People also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion (分泌) was delayed by an hour and a half. The researchers conclude in today’s journal article that given the rise of e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and adolescents, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Czeisler and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note, “Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk.” However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter (过滤) short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research. 24. In Charles Czeislers experiment, all the subjects were asked to ______. A. sit in a row and receive the strict tests B. have their sleep patterns observed all night C. read a paper book and an iPad at the same time D. have their blood tested per hour during the trial 25. The third paragraph tells us the iPad readers were likely to ______. A. feel less sleepy and tired in the day B. fall asleep more easily after reading C. become less energetic the next morning D. have a lot more melatonin secretion 26. The special software recently developed can ______. A. remove the blue light from your devices completely B. help prevent eyes being harmed by short wavelength C. weaken the harm done by doing nighttime e-reading D. be used in all the e-things widely and safely 27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?____________________________________________________________________________________________ A. No e-reading in bed before sleep B. New software for night e-readers C. Wrong behaviors before bedtime D. No games on iPad in bed C The sea has always amazed me. When I was a child, people called me a mermaid because I spend too much time underwater. After growing up I went to London with one of my friends. I found a job but unluckily the relationship between us soon fell apart. I lived alone and couldn’t eat and had bad dreams because of the huge stress I suffered from. Finally I decided to return to my hometown---Cornwall. One evening while walking near the harbour, I saw the most beautiful sunset. I imagined how magical it would be if a mermaid swam in the sea on an evening like this. Then I thought I could be that mermaid. I did my first public swim as a mermaid three weeks later. I jumped into the water in the tail I bought and swam around the harbour. Soon some people noticed me in amazement. At first I thought that whenever I had time I would jump into the sea and surprise people. But now my appearances have developed into planned events. I’ve found a secret cove (海湾) where I change into my tail and swim out to the sea. Rocks shelter me from view before I appear, so it seems like I have swum from the middle of the sea. I tell people officially online where and when I will apear so people can come and take photos. After my appearances, I swam back to my cove, where I change out of my tail. Although I give business shows sometimes, my beach appearances are without payment. It’s a way of giving something pleasurable to my hometown that helped me recover. Besides, I have realized how much I need to be in and near the sea. It’s part of who I am. 28. What gave the author the idea to dress up as a mermaid? A. Her job requirement. B. Her love for swimming. C. The praise she received as a kid. D. The beautiful view of the harbour. 29. Why did the author leave London to return to Cornwell? A. She was sad and stressed. B. She missed her hometown. C. She couldn’t find a good job. D. She didn’t want to see her friend. 30. What does the author think is the meaning of her beach appearances? A. Increasing her income. B. Bringing her good fame. C. Adding fun to her hometown. D. Providing a means of living. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该涂 黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Create Luck in Everyday Life In everyday life?
