That’s because for a few days in spring, people crowd the streets and pelt(投掷) anyone walking by with brightly-colored powder to celebrate the arrival of spring and the end of evil. It’s hard to avoid the fun and the paint, unless you stay inside or look angry enough to discourage the custom. “Watch out, madam!” said my taxi driver in Amritsar as we drove through a crowd of young people pelting each other with powder. “The colors never come out of your clothes,” he said. “And you might be having purple hair for many days.” I did a quick check. I was wearing black, a color rarely seen in India. It is usually connected with the lowest social classes, and can be viewed as unlucky. I was happy for my clothes to be painted in colors. “I have some powder I bought for my children. You can have some gladly, to join in our customs.” he encouraged. Holding what the driver handed me as my weapon of choice, I walked into the Holi smoke. At first people politely avoided foreigners. Butthen a girl in a sari(一种印度服饰)ran up smiling and put paint on my face. I returned the favor with a handful of pink. With its brilliant clothes, exotic flowers, trucks covered with lights and brightly painted pictures of gods, India is truly one of the most colorful places on the planet! 21. Which of the following sentences about the Holi festival is correct? A. It falls on the same day each year and is celebrated for a few days. B. It is a playful cultural event to throw colored power at friends or strangers. C. It has many purposes, celebrating the end of spring in particular. D. It is fun for local people but a little unacceptable for foreigners. 22. I was happy for my black clothes to be painted in colors because . A. the festival influenced my taste in fashion. B. the taxi driver suggested wearing something colorful. C. black was the color not liked by people in India. D. a girl invited me to join in their customs. 23. We can learn from the passage that . A. the color black provides people with a sense of mystery and tradition. B. foreigners can’t be too careful in the street in India during the Holi festival. C. a sari, worn especially by Indian women, is a must for the Holi celebration. D. anyone can be attacked during Holi festival. B As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how. In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it. In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)” According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.24. What can we learn about the first experiment? A. Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer. B. The two groups remembered the information equally well. C. The first group did not try to remember the formation. D. The second group did not understand the information. 25. In transactive memory, people _. A. keep the information in mind B. change the quantity of information C. organize information like a computer D. remember how to find the information 26. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research? A. We are using memory differently. B. We are becoming more intelligent. C. We have poorer memories than before. D. We need a better way to access information. C Traveling with kids is 90 percent reminding yourself to live in the moment and 10 percent making up your mind to never again leave your house. I have an uncanny ability to forget this as soon as we return home from a trip and I’ve finished washing piles of dirty clothes in our luggage and cleaning all the messy caused by the kids. Extremely tired and annoyed, I would actually begin to miss the place we just left! Family travel is like childbirth, I suppose. Painful, loud, messy, sort of awful, actually, but also wonderful. And you remember only the wonderful—until you’re back on a plane and your kids are fighting over who gets the aisle seat. Then you remember the bad stuff. Last weekend, my kids and I flew to Texas for a trip we would have nothing to complain about—big hotel, wonderful view. And yet—we found things to complain about. The pool was bigger in that other hotel! Why do you get to shower first? They call this coffee?! Luckily, I’ve learned to put my metaphorical coat of armor (盔甲) on as soon as we land somewhere, and it forces complaints to bounce (弹起) off me and land in a pile at my feet. For three days, genuine fun was had and annoying complaints were heard and ignored. Until it was time to catch a plane and fly home. Unfortunately, our flight was canceled. We spent hours finding a hotel room. We hit the hotel pool before bed and swam well into the night, my kids making up songs and laughing so hard at their silly lyrics and their crazy good luck to be swimming at 10: 30 on a school night. And that was when it hit me that family travel is all those things I said before but it’s also a lot more. It’s taking your kids to parts of the world that will open their eyes and finding that actually, yours need opening too. It’s remembering that joy and memories are where you make them, not where you find them. 27. The underlined word “uncanny” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to . A. unknown. B. uncertain. C. unexpected. D. unusual. 28. According to the passage, family travel is like childbirth in that . A. they both cause financial trouble and pain. B. they are both hard as well as rewarding. C. childhood memories come flooding back when they travel. D. both of them need many preparations.29. By saying “I’ve learned to put my metaphorical coat of armor on” in Paragraph 5, the author means that . A. she tries to deal with the complaints more wisely and properly. B. she turns those annoying complaints into a means to educate kids. C. she has improved her language skills when handling the complaints. D. she has succeeded in escaping kids’ fighting thanks to the armor. 30. From the author’s experience in the passage, we can NOT learn that . A. family vacation benefits her kids as well as her. B. joy and memories should be created rather than discovered. C. the most unforgettable memory for her is about the complaints. D. she has to spend some time on housework after the family vacation. 第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入 空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Discover Your Talent Talent tends to refer to that inborn skill that everyone seems to be born with. 31 . Yours sincerely, Li Hua It was Christmas Eve, and almost all the people were getting together with their family, having the big dinner or enjoying the charming lights of the Christmas tree. But Tomas was still on the way, and it was still a long way to the destination. He felt tired, lonely and cold, especially when a wind was blowing in his cab. Tomas pulled in the truck and reached for his jacket but stopped when he saw the box on the passenger seat next to him. His mother was the greatest mother in the world who worried about him spending Christmas on the road alone and had givenhim a box filled with presents before he left home. Though he has been a driver now, his mum still treats him like a kid. He reached into the red stocking that was in the box and brought out a toy tractor that looked a lot like his truck. He wondered how many stores his mother had to go before she found such a close match. Tears filled his eyes. He climbed out of his truck and ran into the all-night café, which was a truck stop that many truck drivers liked to have a rest in. But today, besides those truckers who were eating and talking loudly as usual, there were a family of three sitting in a corner, wearing shabby (破旧的) clothes and looking sleepy. The mother hugged the boy who looked unhappy in her arms and the father only muttered something to them or to himself. Seeing this, Tomas missed his family more. His mum raised four kids by herself, but no matter how hard the life was, she always made sure they had a good Christmas. Paragraph 1: Tomas felt sorry for the boy. . I sincerely hope you can accept my apologies and understand my situation. Looking forward to your reply. Your sincerely, Li Hua 读后续写 One possible version: Tomas felt sorry for the boy. No kid should spend Christmas Eve in a truck stop. Then he thought of his box filled with presents chosen by his mother. He looked at the kid again and knew what to do. He put on his jacket, went outside and climbed into his truck. In no time did he come back with that stocking. He walked to the family. “I think Santa Claus left this for you,” Tomas said and handed it to the boy. “Tell Santa thanks, and best wishes to you,” the boy’s father said and shook Tomas’ hand long and hard. The boy’s face lit up almost at once and he eagerly dug inside the stocking, full of curiosity and happiness. Tomas felt a little excited and made sure it was the greatest Christmas that he had had. What made him more amazing was that he didn’t feel tired or lonely any more. 听力稿 (Text 1) W: When were you born, Martin? M: I was born in 1979. How about you? W: I am three years older than you. (Text 2) W: Good morning, Mr Robinson. Please feel free to talk about anything you like. I want this talk to feel like a conversation. M: OK, I really want to contribute something to your magazine. (Text 3) M: I failed English last year and have to take it again this year. W: Maybe it's for the best. You could take this opportunity to improve your English ability. M: It makes sense in a way. (Text 4) W: So, what would you like me to fix for dinner tonight? M: Never mind cooking anything for me. I will not be home. W: Okay. Then I will just cook for myself and the kids then. (Text 5) M: Professor Minors, could I talk to you about my paper? W: Sure, come to my office between 2 to 3. It's room 340. (Text 6) M: Excuse me. Is this where I catch the bus for the zoo? W: Well, you can take No. 36 bus from here to the Post Office, and then you have to walk about 30 minutes. M: That doesn't sound too good. W: Actually, if you go to the next bus stop beside the Bank of China, you can take bus 301 which will let you right off in front of the zoo. M: Great! That's what I'll do. Thanks a lot. (Text 7) W: John, did you have a dream when you was a little boy? M: Of course I did. I dreamed to be a pilot when I grow up. But unfortunately, I didn't realize it. W: I had the same experience with you. When I was a little girl I dreamed to be a great scientist. But now you see, I'm just a common office clerk. M: Okay, forget about that. Do you have some practical dreams at present? W: I do. And now I'm working hard to learn French, and I want to be an interpreter some day. M: You're promising. Just follow your dream and never give up.W:Thanks, I will. (Text 8) M: Could you please help me to check out the book? W: Sure, what's the author's name, please? M: I can't remember that clearly. It probably be Charles… W: Charles Dickens? M: No, no, no. I'm not interested in literature. W: OK, do you know the title of the book? M: Oh, sorry. I'm always absentminded. I remember that I've put a note in my pocket. W: So, show me the note please. M: I can't find it now. W: Oh, such bad luck, sir. Can you please name the category of the book? M: Let me see. It's not fiction. It's biography. W: OK, I'll search it for you. A moment, please. M: Thanks. (Text 9) W: Tom,what are you going to do in the future? M: I want to be a scientist. W: Can you tell me why? M: I think scientists contribute a lot to our comfortable lives. I want to be a useful person. W: Sounds great! Then who's your favorite scientist? M: Copernicus! He discovered the sun was the center of the universe, and all the planets went around it. He also discovered the earth was spinning while it was travelling around the sun. Our ideas of the universe are all based on his theory. And his theory even influenced the work of the great scientists, like Newton and Einstein afterwards. W: Wow! I wonder how he made his discoveries. M: Well, at his time, people believed the earth was the center of the universe. But if that was the case, some things didn't make sense. So, Copernicus tried to find an answer. He collected observations of the stars, and used all his mathematical knowledge to analyse them. That finally led to his theory. W: Copernicus was great indeed! M: Absolutely! But unfortunately, he didn't publish his theory until he was dying. W: How come? M: At that time, the Christian Church was extremely strict about ideas. If Copernicus put forward his theory, the theory would certainly have been rejected. And he himself would have been attacked and punished, too.
