In the dictionary, a clown( 小 丑 ) is described as an entertainer who wears funny clothes, has a
painted face and makes people laugh by performing tricks and behaving in a silly way. But there has
been nothing silly about the creepy clowns that seem to be appearing in various parts of America
since this summer. The situation has become so ridiculous that police departments and schools are
appealing to the public and students to stop dressing up as evil(邪恶的)clowns to scare people.
The fear of clowns is not a joke. Many find that the painted face, funny clothes and other clown-like
behavior actually scares them. Bullies(恶霸)are putting this unreasonable fear to use and clowning
seems to have become a new way to scare people. .
Recently, an 11-year-old boy was pulled up in California. He admitted that he scared fellow students
with pictures of scary clowns. In other examples, there have been reports of people dressed as clowns trying to lure(引诱)children to unsafe places.
Clowning seems to have become popular among school bullies as a new form of expression. To
protect and keep students safe, many schools have now banned clown costumes in schools and
especially for Halloween. While this is a good thing, the consequence of such a ban has had bad
effects on the folks who have made a living clowning all their lives!
Professional clowns have been upset by the threat to their jobs. Think about it, is it fair to the real
clowns that their profession is being looked at with suspicion(怀疑),when all they try to do is
make us laugh with light-hearted silly acts? An organization to protect clowns called "Clown Lives
Matter" tries to address the worries and threats to the livelihood of clowns. They want us to know
that clowns are not just a painted face, they are people too!

How did we survive before the Internet? Finding the answer to almost any question is now just a
matter of typing the question into a search engine and then looking at the results. Although we still
have to make sure the source is reliable and check that different sources are giving us the same
answer, it has never been easier to find information.
One of the side effects of this has been the rise of plagiarism(剽窃)in schools and universities.
According to the Macmillan online dictionary, plagiarism is 'the process of taking another person's
work, ideas or words, and using them as if they were your own'. If I had used this quote without
mentioning the source and adding quotation marks then I would be guilty of plagiarism.
If you use the Internet then you'll know how easy it is to highlight a piece of text, copy it and then
paste(粘贴)it into a document on your computer. It's a useful tool when we are copying something
for personal use such as a food recipe(食谱). But it's a different story when we are preparing a
piece of work that will be marked and judged as our own by a teacher or examiner.
Imagine how attractive it must be for a student looking for the answer to a complex question to find
the answer online and copy and paste it into their document without giving recognition to the original author. Apart from copying and pasting large parts of text, it's also possible to buy
ready-made essays(文章)on the Internet, encouraging students to get someone else to do their work
for them. It's a problem facing many schools and universities today.
In an effort to address the problem, many schools now use computer software designed to detect
plagiarism. Turnitin.com is one Internet service that compares students' work with the material found
online.
But I believe that Internet plagiarism is a problem that needs to be handled when students are as
young as seven. If students are taught how to formally give recognition and supply sources then
attitudes might change. Copying other people's words and pretending they are yours is a form of
cheating and it's something children need to learn from a very early age.
