The pupils of Grangetown High have been busy getting to know their newest and tallest classmate — a
7-meter-tall giraffe outside their school.
The giraffe is a huge sculpture ( 雕 像 ) made by a local artist. The school's headmaster noticed the
sculpture in the artist's garden as he drove past one day, and thought it would be perfect for his school. “I
knew everyone would love it,” he said, “because our basketball team is known as the Grangetown Giraffes,
and they wear giraffes on their shirts. So I asked them to write a letter to the artist, asking how much it
would cost to buy the giraffe. He was very kind and got it ready to deliver (递送) in six weeks — all for
nothing! It was expected to arrive one Sunday morning, so that the pupils would see it when they got to
school on Monday — at that time they had no idea that we were getting it.”
The artist, Tom Bennett, was a university professor of chemistry before he left that job in 2006 and
only took up metalwork a couple of years ago. “I've always drawn pictures,” he said. “I can even remember
doing it on my first day at school — I drew a horse. I wanted it to be the best horse picture ever, but I don't
think I succeeded.” Tom's first metalwork was a bicycle for two that he and his wife could go cycling on
together. “It was the most uncomfortable bike ever created,” he said, “so I gave up making bicycles and
went into sculpture instead.”
Meanwhile the pupils at Grangetown High are very happy with their new classmate. “We're going to
hold a competition to give it a proper name,” said one girl. “Everyone likes the expression on its face, so
perhaps that will give us some ideas.”
24.When the pupils got to school on Monday, they probably felt _____.
A. shy B. sad C. excited D. confident
25. According to the text, the giraffe _____.
A. was as tall as a basketball player

27. What's the main idea of the text?

A severe drought (干旱)has caused water levels in Southeast Asia’s Mekong River to drop to their
lowest in more than 100 years. It may have harmful effects on fish, as well as the tens of millions of people
living and working along the river, experts warn.3
This year, the dry conditions in the Mekong region happened due to warm Pacific Ocean currents (洋
流 )known as the El Nino effect. But climate change is also a driving factor, experts say, causing the
monsoon (季风)season to shorten sharply. The situation was made worse by water dam operators upstream,
withholding water for their own purposes.
Many rice farmers in the area have been unable to plant their main crop, raising fears of a heavily
decreased harvest this fall. Less water flow could also have a bad influence on fish reproduction in the
Mekong River basin. This is normally the time when fish use rising water levels to reproduce their young,
but there is little sign of this happening so far this year.
Perhaps even more alarming, experts expect that droughts and damage to the water of the Mekong will
become more common, and they warn that it could eventually destroy the entire ecosystem.
Starting from the Tibetan highlands, the Mekong River flows through six Asian countries, including
China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, before emptying into the South China Sea. The
river basin is home to the largest inland fishery in the world and more than 60 million people depend on it to
make a living.
Few rivers in the world rise and fall with the seasons as much as the Mekong, which can drop up to 40
feet in some places at the end of the dry season. When the monsoon rains arrive, they normally produce a
flood that brings with it sediments(沉积物) as well as enormous amounts of larvae(幼虫)and tiny fish,
including many endangered species, such as the Mekong giant catfish, that are swept into the Tonle Sap
Lake where they can grow.
28.How many reasons are there for the drought of Mekong River this year?
A. One B.Two C. Three D. Four.
29.What's the attitude of experts to water flow of Mekong River in future?
A. Positive. B. Unconcerned. C. Worried. D. Negative.
30.What can we know from the passage?
A.Droughts are likely to happen more frequently in the future.
B.The water levels of the Mekong River is becoming lower and lower.
C.The Mekong River starts from the Tibetan highlands and ends in the Tonic Sap Lake.
D.The harvest offish in the River hasn't been greatly a fleeted because of the droughts.
31.In which magazine can we most probably find this passage?
A. Overseas English. B. Scientific American.
C. National Geography. D. Tourism.

American writer Ernest Hemingway wrote a short story The Capital of the World, In this book he tells
about a Spanish father who wants to find his son who has run away from home. He advertises in the El
Liberal newspaper, “Paco, meet me at the Hotel Montana at noon on Tuesday. All is forgiven. Love, Papa.”
Paco is a common name in Spain. When the father goes to the hotel he finds 800 young men named
Paco waiting for their fathers.
What draws them to the hotel? As Hemingway tells it, it is the words “All is forgiven.” The father does
not say, “All WILL BE forgiven IF you do this or that.” He simply says, “All is forgiven.” No strings
attached.
Wiktionary tells us that the origin of the expression “no strings attached” may date back to ancient
times when documents were written on parchment (羊皮纸) that was rolled up and secured with a string.
An unknown author portrays the possibilities of no-strings-attached love in this heartfelt story titled
The Rock
As she grows older her teenage daughter becomes increasingly rebellious. It is late one night when the
police arrests her daughter for drunk driving. Mom has to go to the police station to pick her up.
They don’t speak until the next afternoon. Mom breaks the silence by giving her a small gift - a
wrapped box. Her daughter coldly opens it and finds a little rock inside. She rolls her eyes and says,
“What’s this for?”
“Read the card,” Mom instructs.
Her daughter takes out the card and reads it. Tears start to run down her cheeks. She gets up and
lovingly hugs her Mom as the card falls to the floor. On the card are these words: “This rock is more than
200,000,000 years old. That is how long it will take before I give up on you.”
This mother doesn’t say, “I will love you IF...” Instead, she says that she will love her daughter forever
and nothing can change that. No strings attached.
32. The father places an ad in the local newspaper in order to .
A. find a hotel to live in B. contact his son

.4
