Ruby Kate Chitsey was heartbroken when she learned that a woman in the Arkansas nursing
home where her mother worked had to give up her dog because she couldn't afford to feed it. The
woman, Pearl, received only $40 a month from local health care program and that had to cover
expenses like haircuts, clothes and pet food. Eleven-year-old Ruby Kate couldn't believe there are
almost 1 million other people like Pearl, trying to get by on so little.
Shortly afterwards, Ruby Kate founded the project of Three Wishes for Ruby's Residents to
support seniors living in nursing homes across the U.S. She started asking people what items they
wished they had and wrote their answers in a notebook, trying to realize three of their wishes. She
thought maybe they would want money or cars, but was surprised their requests were so simple,
which were typically everyday items like fresh fruit, better toothpaste or shoes that fit.
The first day, she and her mom bought nearly everything on the list. But then Ruby Kate began
organizing donations so she could help realize more wishes. Later, she created an online campaign to
help even more people. The campaign raised more than $250,000 from 6,000 people worldwide.Thoughtful Ruby Kate got this year's Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, an award that
celebrates young people from across North America who've had a positive influence on people, their
communities and the environment. Each year, the Barron Prize honors 25 young leaders from ages 8
to 18. Fifteen top winners each receive $10,000 to support their service work or higher education.
“I feel valued for doing what matters to me — being kind — and am so glad the world took my
voice seriously,” Ruby Kate says. “Mostly, I do appreciate that I've changed the world for the elderly
I know.”

Pressing the power button to turn off your computer can save time—but can it also damage
your machine? Raise your hand if losing your computer would be a serious hindrance(起妨碍作用
的事物或人) to your career, or if, at the very least, you’d lose a whole lot of important information.
Yeah, us too. And yet we tend not to treat our computers with the care about this advantage; many of
us are probably guilty of these things you’re doing that shorten your laptop’s life.
One of the directives(指令;指示) you’ll commonly hear when it comes to computer upkeep
(保养) is that you should shut down your computer properly by clicking the “Shut Down” button
onscreen, rather than pressing and holding the “Power” button, so that it shuts down immediately.
But when you click “Shut Down,” every program needs to close, and that can be time-consuming.
How bad, really, is shutting your computer down with the power button?
“Shutting down a system properly is known as a ‘graceful(优雅的,得体的) shutdown’,
which sends a signal to the respective(各自的,相应的)operating system so that it can save its state before turning the hardware off,” an expert Damien Mason says. However, Mason adds that
this forced shutdown can even be beneficial, in certain situations. “Hard shutdowns can be a saving
grace when a system crashes or as a safety way to prevent hackers,” he says. But you still shouldn’t
make a habit of doing it. Mason says that graceful shutdowns are still a preferred method, which
avoids interrupting tasks conducted by the operating system and allows programs to properly save.
You should press the “Power” button carefully, but it’s not a death knell(某事物结束的象征;
凶兆) for your machine. There are plenty of other things you may be doing that are most likely
worse. For instance, not shutting down your computer at all—or even only doing it rarely—can be
far more damaging to it than a forced shutdown.
27. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Computers do not need protection.
B. Computers have only one advantage.
C. Computers can be used for a long time.
D. Computers play an important role in work.
28. How would you choose to turn off your computer according to Paragraph 2?
A. No need to shut down.
B. Press and hold the “Power”.
C. Pull out the power line wires.
D. Click the “Shut Down” onscreen.
29. Which of the following is mentioned in the text?
A. The situations of no pressing and holding the “Power”.
B. The problem about choosing the “Shut Down” onscreen.
C. The advantages of clicking the “Shut Down” onscreen.
D. The advice on developing a habit of pressing the “Power”.
30. What does the last paragraph imply(暗示)?
A. Bad behaviors may damage the computer.
B. Computer upkeep is actually very difficult.
C. Forced shutdown will destroy the computer.
D. Think carefully before turning off the computer.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked
along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car.
He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face
of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you’ve got a
problem,” Arthur said.
“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.”
“Is there something I can do to help? Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases
in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could
help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the
ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking,
he heard the long loud noise of an alarm(警报).
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the
alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined
the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a
different answer.
Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young
woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me
like that?” He thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another
thought, he started to run.

结合后文“It’s a great first
look into the world of engineering for children...”可知,他们认为这对孩子们而言是一次
很好的了解工程学的体验,由此推测,他们非常乐意做这件事。故选 B。
53. 考查名词。句意:同上。空后“It’s a great first look into the world of engineering for children...”

Dear Tom,
I’m so glad to hear from you and your concern about our online schooling during the
COVID-19 epidemic. I’d like to share with you some related information.
Though the spring semester is postponed, schooling continues online under our teachers’
guidance. Each of the daily 7 classes is scheduled to last 40 minutes, with a 15-minute break for
self-relaxation. Gradually, I’ve adapted to such a unique way of learning and become an independent
learner.
However, I still hope to return to campus, where I can enjoy face-to-face classes with my
classmates and teachers.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
