第二节
Dear Elkins,
I’m writing to tell you that I will go to your city for a ten-day self-guided trip with my cousin
during the coming summer vacation in celebration of my graduation from high school.
We are scheduled to reach Manchester on 20th July. Could you please pick us up at the airport as
we have no idea of how to arrive at our hotel? Moreover, although we have surfed the Internet for not
only some nice tourist attractions but also some do’s and don’ts while visiting Manchester, we are still a
little bit worried. I hope you can give us more advice about these things.
I would appreciate it if you could send me a reply as soon as possible.
Yours gratefully,
Li Hua

W: Mm. Perhaps she ought to try a size 14.
(Text 3)
M: Excuse me. Is this seat taken?

W: That is terrible. You have to hurry.
M: Good morning. My name’s James Goodman.
W: Ah, good morning, Mr. Goodman. Nice to meet you. I’m Alisa Banks from Personnel. Do sit down.
M: Thank you very much.
W: Now, have you brought your curriculum vitae with you?
M: Oh, my CV. Yes, here it is. There are three copies.
W: Have you brought your certificates as well?
M: No. I’m awfully sorry. Can I send them to you?
W: Yes, that’ll be all right. Now, let’s talk about the post.
M: I have been told that you often take exercise in a gym.
W: I used to, but now I don’t like exercising inside a gym; the air isn’t fresh.
M: Yeah. More and more people are choosing to take part in outdoor activities, so that they can be
closer to nature.
W: You must like outdoor sports too, huh?
M: I like to go hiking. Just the thought of it makes my heart skip a beat.
W: Me too. Do you want to go hiking at Xiangshan this weekend?
M: Sure, that’s exactly what I want to do, but unluckily I haven’t met someone who is willing to go
there with me.
M: Dad was really bad-tempered last night. And it’s not like him. He used to like meeting my friends.
W: Well, I’m afraid you’ve come at rather a bad time.
M: What do you mean?
W: Well, I wasn’t going to tell you... He hasn’t been feeling very well lately.
M: Has he seen the doctor?
W: Yes, he had a check-up last month. The doctor says he may have to go into hospital.
M: Oh no! What is it, exactly?
W: They’re not sure. But they think it may be his heart.
M: Oh, perhaps I ought to stay here, then. The others can go without me.
W: No, there’s no point in that. It probably isn’t serious at all. And please, Jack, don’t say anything to
your dad about this...
W: This is the house I want to rent.
M: Could you tell me the advantages of it?
W: No problem. First, it’s comfortable. Second, it has a lovely view of the city. Third, it has all kinds of
needed electric appliances. Fourth is the most important, the electricity is free of charge. Finally, it’s
located in the center of the city and the transportation is convenient.
M: There is something in what you said, but what is the rent?
W: 200 dollars per week.
M: In my opinion, the rent is far more expensive than that in other areas.
W: It certainly is. But the room is large and I can share it with someone else, which will decrease the
total amount of the rent.
M: Your intention is good, but I still can’t agree with you. If no one would like to share it with you,
you’ll have to pay it all by yourself.
W: Don’t you think I can save some bus fares since it’s easy to go anywhere from here and it’s near the
place where I work?
M: I agree with you in this way. But how often do you go to work or shopping per week?
W: Twice a week for work and once for shopping.
M: You have to go to the university every day. The fare would cost you most of your living expenses if
you live here far away from the university.
W: That’s true. I will think about it.
Heading out for your first volunteering project abroad is exciting. However, it can also be tough,
particularly as you may never have done something so independent before. Here are a few tips to help
you on your way.
Do some research. You should familiarize yourself with the currency, the customs, etc. If you’re
heading away for a long time to an unfamiliar location, homesickness will strike. Knowing what to
expect before you leave will help you a lot.
Get your flights at the right time. Some volunteer projects may come with flights. It’s always
worth getting your flights fixed as early as possible, because flights tend to be cheaper the earlier you
book them. Flights are also less expensive if booked after midnight on a weekday, or in January when
many airlines hold winter sales.
Familiarize yourself with the work. There are various volunteer programs worldwide. Talking to
the former volunteers, or people you’ll be working with can be a great way to prepare yourself for the
work ahead!
Prepare for culture shock. However much you research, you may still experience a degree of
culture shock if you’re a new traveller. America is such a nation, but don’t worry! If you’re prepared
for this feeling, you’ll find it much easier to rid. Try to translate your culture shock into culture
curiosity and you’ll soon find that you start enjoying involving yourself in a foreign culture.
