I don’t hate New York; there is really nothing there to hate and 33 very little to love. It is a city of indifference, and that’s the problem. I found I could only 34 indifference in return. ‎ ‎ A few days ago in Central Park I saw a man leaning on a litter can drinking a carton of orange juice, and when he finished he tossed the container not in the can but on the 35 . I don’t understand this, but there is a lot about New York I don’t understand. 36 I don’t understand why the city has no soul. Vienna almost suffocates the citizens with care, Paris manages to inspire 37 own with a sense of their fulfillment; but New York’s key 38 ‎ is that it doesn’t really care about anything. ‎ ‎ I recall, 39 , the New Year’s Eve when, after a dinner party, a friend of mine went down to the street to get a taxicab and the cab turned too sharply 40 hit him. His wife and I took him in the cab to Lenox Hill Hospital, and while we were trying to get emergency 41 for him, the cabdriver was 42 at us for the fare. Such things may happen in other large cities, and undoubtedly 43 , but they reflect a lack of caring, a sickness in the 44 that I find difficult to forgive and impossible to 45 . ‎ ‎ And so I come to the bottom line. I don’t want to live in a city where a woman 46 for a lost dog and receives dozens of telephone calls from a variety of people saying they are torturing the animal and will continue to do so 47 she pays large sums of money; or in a city where I am 48 I must always have a $‎10 in my wallet for a possible robber because without that I will surely be stabbed; or in a city where my mailman leaves a note in my box at Christmas 49 the size of the tip he expects. Above all, I want to get away from the indifference of New York. I want to care and it may sound 50 — be cared about. ‎ 21. A. field B. subject C. issue D. question ‎ 22. The first massive electronic computers, capable of rapid calculation and little or no creative activity, were soon dubbed(取绰号) “electronic brains”. A ‎ reaction to this terminology quickly followed, computers were called “high speed idiots”, an effort to protect human vanity(虚荣心) . But not everyone realized the implications of the high-speed idiot tag. It has not been pointed out enough that even the human idiot is one of the most intelligent life forms on earth. If the early computers were even that intelligent, it was already a remarkable state of affairs.‎ ‎ One consequence of speculation(推测) about the possibility of computer thought was that we were forced to examine with new care the idea of thought in general. It soon became clear that we were not sure what we meant by such terms as thought and thinking. We tend to assume that human beings think, some more than others, though we often call people thoughtless or unthinking. Dreams cause a problem, partly because they usually happen outside our control. They are obviously some type of mental experience, but are they a type of thinking? And the question of nonhuman life forms adds further problems. Many of us would maintain that some of the higher animals-dogs, cats, apes, and so on - are capable of at least basic thought, but what about fish and insects? If thinking is demonstrated by evident electrical activity in the brain, then many species are capable of thought. Once we have formulated clear ideas on what thought is in biological creatures, it will be easier to discuss the question of thought in artifacts(人工制品). And what is true of thought is also true of the many other mental processes. One of the immense benefits of a research is that we are being forced to scrutinize(仔细研究), with new rigor, the working of the human mind.‎ ‎ It is already clear that machines have superior mental abilities to many life forms. No fern(蕨类) or oak tree can play chess as well as even the simplest digital computer, nor can frogs weld(焊) car bodies as well as robots. It seems that, viewed in terms of intellect, the computer should be set well above plants and most animals. Only the higher animals can compete with computers with regard to intellect and even then with diminishing success.‎ ‎51. Why was “Electronic brains” changed to “high speed idiots”?‎ ‎ A. People felt threatened.‎ ‎ B. People wanted to show their superiority in a superficial way.‎ ‎ C. People thought that even human idiots are cleverer than computers.‎ ‎ D. People didn’t realize the implications of the high-speed idiot tag.‎ ‎52. What was one result of speculating whether computers could think?‎ A. We had to figure out how human brain works.‎ B. We had to reconsider what thought mean in general.‎ C. We had to get mental processes under control.‎ D. We had to determine if thinking can be demonstrated. ‎ ‎53. What does the author want to illustrate by mentioning the fern and the oak tree?‎ ‎ A. Digital computers are the most intelligent in the world.‎ ‎ B. Human beings are the most intelligent in the world.‎ ‎ C. Lower animals are unable to think like human beings.‎ ‎ D. Some creatures are inferior to computers in mental abilities.‎ B For several days I saw little of Mr. Rochester. In the morning he seemed much occupied with business, and in the afternoon gentlemen from the neighborhood called and sometimes stayed to dine with him. When his foot was well enough, he rode out a great deal.‎ During this time, all my knowledge of him was limited to occasional meetings about the house, when he would sometimes pass me coldly, and sometimes bow and smile. His changes of manner did not offend me, because I saw that I had nothing to do with the cause of them.‎ One evening, several days later, I was invited to talk to Mr. Rochester after dinner. As I was looking at him, he suddenly turned, and asked me, “Do you think I’m handsome, Miss Eyre?”‎ The answer somehow slipped from my tongue before I realized it: “No, sir.”‎ ‎“Ah, you really are unusual! You are a quiet, serious little person, but you can be almost rude.”‎ ‎“Sir, I’m sorry. I should have said that beauty doesn’t matter, or something like that.”‎ ‎“No, you shouldn’t! I see, you criticize my appearance, and then you stab me in the back! You have honesty and feeling. There are not many girls like you. But perhaps I go too fast. Perhaps you have awful faults to counterbalance your few good points.”‎ I thought to myself that he might have too. He seemed to read my mind, and said quickly, “Yes, you’re right. I have plenty of faults. I went the wrong way when I was twenty-one, and have never found the right path again. I might have been very different. I might have been as good as you, and perhaps wiser. I am not a bad man, take my word for it, but I have done wrong. It wasn’t my character, but circumstances that were at fault. Why do I tell you all this? Because you’re the sort of person people tell their problems and secrets to, because you’re sympathetic and give them hope.”‎ ‎“Don’t be afraid of me, Miss Eyre.” He continued. “You don’t relax or laugh very much, perhaps because of the effect Lowood school has had on you. But in time you will be more natural with me, and laugh, and speak freely. You’re like a bird in cage. When you get out of the cage, you’ll fly very high. Good night.”‎ ‎54. At the beginning Miss Eyre’s impressions about Mr. Rochester were all EXCEPT ________. ‎ ‎ A. moody B. busy C. accessible D. sociable ‎55. By saying “you stab me in the back”, Mr. Rochester meant ________‎ ‎ A. Jane was not being honest.‎ ‎ B. Jane had an evil intention.‎ C. Jane’s criticism about his appearance hurt him deeply.‎ D. Jane added something that hurt him deeper. ‎ ‎56. In Mr. Rochester’s eyes, Miss Eyre was ________. ‎ ‎ A. irritable and indifferent ‎ B. sympathetic and special ‎ C. hopeful but rude ‎ D. direct and optimistic ‎57. From what Mr. Rochester told Miss Eyre, we can conclude that he wanted to ________. ‎ ‎ A. share his troubles with her ‎ B. prove that appearance doesn’t matter ‎ C. leave a deep impression on her ‎ D. warn her not to choose the wrong path ‎58. At the end of the passage, Mr. Rochester sounded ________. ‎ ‎ A. pessimistic B. encouraging C. patient D. enthusiastic ‎59. According to the passage, which is NOT true?‎ ‎ A. Lowood school had an impact on Jane.‎ ‎ B. It’s a long time since Jane arrived at Mr. Rochester’s house.‎ ‎ C. Mr. Rochester is a man who has experienced a lot.‎ ‎ D. Mr. Rochester is confident he will get along well with Jane.‎ C The phone ID flashed, “Emergency Vet”. “Oh no” I whispered. I could not lose Merlin now.‎ Ron and I had tried to have children for a long time with depressing results. I threw myself into my work. Any maternal feelings I had were spent on Merlin.‎ I couldn’t wait to get home from work each night. I wanted to pick up that warm bundle of loving fur and nestle him. I wanted to sing “Rock-a-bye Merlin”, as I did every night as he would put his paws around my neck.‎ Merlin was my comfort especially at times when I wondered if God was listening. But last night something had changed. Not only did I sing “Rock-a-Bye Merlin”, but I asked, “What will I do after you’re gone?”‎ Although Merlin was 19 years old, a senior in the age of a cat, he didn’t look or act that way. I didn’t want to accept the fact that he was nearing the end of his lifetime. My job at the law firm was so demanding and stressful that I couldn’t imagine getting through the day without Merlin waiting to greet me at home.‎ I dialed the vet’s number. I asked for my husband but he already left. Then I took a breath and asked the question that no one wants to ask, “Is my Merlin still alive?” The nurse said “yes.”‎ Ron came home and said that Merlin had almost no red blood cells left. White blood cells were replacing them. Merlin would need expensive transfusions most likely on a monthly basis. We both knew Merlin was running out of time. I asked Ron to drive me to the vet so I could say goodbye to my little boy cat but he was beat tired and it was late. Ron said if Merlin was still alive the next morning then he would take me to the vet.‎ The next morning I called the vet. Merlin had survived the night.‎ After driving to the vet, I went into the examining room. The nurse brought Merlin and placed him on an examining table on his side. His eyes were tightly shut. I thought he died already. I carefully edged my hand to reach his body. His body felt warm, but when I spoke his name there was no response. No response to his name or that I was there and that I loved him. I was extremely sad.‎ In that examining room I felt helpless. I wondered how many people in an examining room felt as helpless as I did. ‎ Feeling driven to prayer I yelled, “God this isn’t good enough. I need to see my Merlin the way I remember him, I need a miracle and I need it now!”‎ At that moment, God granted a miracle. Merlin’s favorite compliment entered my mind. I said, “Merlin, You are Beautiful and You are Gorgeous, do you hear me?”‎ One eye opened.‎ I said “Gotcha”. I kept repeating those words.‎ Merlin opened the other eye and, one limb at a time, got up. He was waiting for that phrase. He wanted to hear that he was beautiful and gorgeous again.‎ Then I experienced another miracle.‎ There was no sound in that examining room until Merlin started walking to me. From out of nowhere, or maybe from heaven, I clearly heard a song we sung in church often: “It Is Well With My Soul.” I remembered thinking, “Yes, it is well with my Soul. I got to see my little boy cat one more time.”‎ Merlin walked to me. He put his face in mine, which he had never done before. He rubbed a circle around my face twice. Merlin said goodbye with his face and marked me for life.‎ Ron appeared shocked that Merlin was up and had walked to me. I said to Merlin, “Tell God you are a good boy and how much we love you” and then handed him back to the nurse.‎ Tears of gratitude poured forth in memory of a miracle. You see for nineteen years God spoke to me through a special cat named “Merlin.” On Merlin’s last day, God proved he heard me when he granted a miracle. That miracle gave me time to say goodbye.‎ ‎60. Ron’s wife couldn’t lose Merlin because ________.‎ ‎ A. Merlin was her adopted child for nineteen years ‎ B. Kennedy’s was only 119, but as it turns out, your IQ score pales in comparison with your EQ (Emotional Intelligence), MQ (Moral Intelligence), and BQ (Body Intelligence) scores when it comes to predicting your success and professional achievement. ‎ A high IQ is necessary, but it is not adequate to predict executive competence and corporate success. Nobel Prize winning Israeli-American psychologist, Daniel Kahneman, found that people would rather do business with a person they like and trust rather than someone they don’t, even if the likeable person is offering a lower quality product or service at a higher price.‎ With this in mind, instead of exclusively focusing on your conventional intelligence quotient, you should make an investment in strengthening your EQ, MQ, and BQ. These concepts may be difficult to measure, but their significance is far greater than IQ.‎ Emotional Intelligence EQ in brief is about: being aware of your own feelings and those of others, regulating these feelings in yourself and others, using emotions that are appropriate to the situation, and building relationships.‎ Top Tip for Improvement: First, become aware of your inner dialogue. It helps to keep a journal of what thoughts fill your mind during the day. Stress can be a huge killer of emotional intelligence, so you also need to develop healthy coping techniques that can effectively and quickly reduce stress.‎ Moral Intelligence MQ directly follows EQ as it deals with your integrity, responsibility, sympathy, and forgiveness. Keeping commitments, maintaining your integrity, and being honest are crucial to moral intelligence.‎ Top Tip for Improvement: Make fewer excuses and take responsibility for your actions. Show sympathy and communicate respect to others. Show tolerance of other people’s shortcomings. Forgiveness is not just about how we relate to others; it’s also how you relate to and feel about yourself.‎ Body Intelligence Lastly, there is your BQ, or body intelligence, which reflects what you know about your body, how you feel about it, and take care of it. Your body is constantly telling you things; are you listening to the signals or ignoring them? Are you eating energy-giving or energy-draining foods on a daily basis? Are you getting enough rest? Do you exercise and take care of your body? It may seem like these matters are unrelated to professional performance, but your body intelligence absolutely affects your work because it largely determines your feelings, state of mind, and energy level.‎ Top Tip for Improvement: At least once a day, listen to the messages your body is sending you about your health. Live a healthy lifestyle from the aspects mentioned above. Monitoring your weight, and making sure you have down time can dramatically benefit the way you perform at work.‎ It doesn’t matter if you did not receive the best academic training from a top university. A person with less education who has fully developed their EQ, MQ, and BQ can be far more successful than a person with an impressive education who falls short in these other categories. Your IQ will help you personally, but EQ, MQ, and BQ will benefit everyone around you as well. If you can master the complexities of these unique, you will achieve greater success and be regarded as more professionally competent and capable.‎ Intelligence Is Overrated: What You Really Need To Succeed Key points Details Some truths about IQ l IQ scores (1) ▲ greatly among successful people. ‎ l By itself, a high IQ doesn’t (2) ▲ mean that you will stand out and rise above others.‎ l People show (3) ▲ for more trustworthy business partners rather than those with only higher IQ. ‎ Some far more significant (4)▲ of one’s future success Emotional Intelligence l EQ is the ability to (5) ▲ one’s own feelings to suit a particular situation, and get on well with others.‎ l ‎(6) ▲ stress is the top priority in this category.‎ Moral Intelligence l MQ is the capacity to tell right from wrong and (7) ▲ based on the value believed to be right. ‎ l Make an effort to develop some essential virtues.‎ Body Intelligence l BQ is the awareness and use of bodily feelings in order to support your overall health and well-being.‎ l BQ will affect how you perform (8) ▲ .‎ l A balanced (9) ▲ , regular exercise, and adequate rest are all key aspects of having a high BQ.‎ Conclusion l EQ, MQ, and BQ matter more in one’s professional development when compared ‎ with IQ.‎ l EQ, MQ, and BQ are more (10) ▲ to the people around you than IQ.‎ 第六节 书面表达 如图所示,一群高中学生正在操场捡拾垃圾,旁边有部分学生在踢球玩耍,对捡垃圾者熟视无睹。 ‎ As is vividly portrayed in the picture, ____________________________________________‎ 参考答案 一.1-5 CACBA 6-10 ACBBA 11-15 ACACA 16-20 CCBBC 二. Nearby are some boys playing football, totally ignoring what other students are doing.‎ While focusing on their studies, some students do not pay enough attention to their conduct at school, and littering is most common. That’s not appropriate behavior for us high school students, ‎ and i not only dirties the environment but also does great harm to the image of the school.‎ As a matter of fact, a clean environment can never be emphasized too much. It beautifies our school, making it a good place to study in. We should develop good habit of protecting environment. Whenever we see litter on the ground, we hsould pick it up and trow it into dustbins. Let’s keep in mind that better environment means better life.‎
