Language is ever changing, and English is no exception. Grammar changes slowly, but new words expand the language almost every day! Dictionary.com, the world’s leading online dictionary, proved as much when it announced that it had added some new words in August.
“Plogging” is a buzzword combining the Swedish phrase “plocka upp” (pick up) and the English word “jogging”. Described by the online dictionary as “a Swedish exercise trend that combines jogging with picking up litter”, the running trend unites environmentalism with fitness.
The fad ( 时尚) has attracted many nature lovers concerned about the Earth’s health. “People
often hike and surf as a means of reconnecting with nature – but I’ve not seen anything quite as official feeling as plogging,” US eco-life expert Ashlee Piper, told NBC news.
Plogging shows how new lifestyle trends can drive new language trends. Maybe the biggest change comes from smart phones and the Internet. Dictionary.com has added a range of terms based on social media and pop culture searches.
Memes are another source of new words. “Hot girl summer” was also added to the popular online dictionary. It’s about having fun and feeling confident in who you are.
“The language continues to do what it’s been doing for as long as it’s existed: grow and adapt to meet the needs of the people who use it,” Emily Brewster, associate editor at Merriam-Webster, told the Detroit Free Press.

If you go to work, you’re probably familiar with the routine of traveling to the office, hunting for an available desk, completing your tasks and then bearing your commute home. In many ways, it seems like an outdated working practice. And maybe that’s why more and more of us are now choosing to work from home.
There are, of course, many reasons for remote working, as it is also called. The demands of modern life and a desire for a better work-life balance has driven the trend, along with improved
technology, which makes doing most tasks at home a doddle.
In the UK, figures from the Office for National Statistics show more than one and a half million people work from home for their main job. But, although logging on from the comfort of your sofa may appeal, especially if it’s part of a flexible working approach, some people are forced to work from home and find it hard to go. Marketing consultant Mark Black told the BBC he struggled to switch off from work when he was alone at home. He says: "I hated home working. You get up in the morning and stare at the same four walls, do your work, and try and clock off, but you can't." It’s true that being at home means you can’t physically leave your office behind, and as Emma Mamo from mental health charity Mind says: "Home workers don't always have the same opportunities to connect with people as their office-based colleagues.”
But remote working doesn’t always mean being at home. Cafes and workplace spaces offer a chance for workers, particularly self-employed people, to come together and interact with each other. There are also employees who have no choice but to work remotely because their companies
have decided to do away with offices altogether to have a more agile ( 灵活的) workforce - it's
certainly very cost effective and attractive for start-ups. But for those employed by businesses with a physical base, working at home provides a convenient alternative to the 9 to 5. And without the distraction of their colleagues, it can be the most productive place to work!

Getting old might not be something that’s yet to cross your mind. But ageing is inevitable, so
I’m sure we’d all like to control it. It would be great to have a long, healthy and happy life, and that’s why scientists are constantly seeking out evidence to show us how to achieve longevity ( 长 寿).
We all know regular exercise is good. In recent years we’ve been told to walk 10,000 steps a day to remain healthy, although other advice to do three brisk 10-minute walks a day is thought to be more effective. But the latest research might make you walk at a faster pace. That’s because the speed at which people walk in their 40s is a sign of how much their brains, as well as their bodies, are ageing.
The BBC’s Philippa Roxby writes that tests on 1,000 people from New Zealand born in the
1970s found that slower walkers tended to show signs of "accelerated ageing". Their lungs, teeth and immune systems were in worse shape than those who walked faster. Besides, the study found slower walkers' bodies aged more quickly, that their faces looked older and that they had smaller brains. Professor Terrie E Moffitt told the BBC: "It found slow walking is a problem sign decades before old age."
This might be seen as a wake-up call for people with a slower walking pace who might feel it’s time to work out. But it might be too late; researchers writing in JAMA Network Open say they were able to predict the walking speed of 45-year-olds using the results of intelligence, language and motor skills tests from when they were aged three. They also suggest that even in early life, there are signs showing people will go on to have a healthier life.
So, what’s the point of knowing that a slower walking pace might mean a smaller brain? Researchers say measuring walking speed at a younger age, and understanding what this might mean, could be a way of testing treatments to slow human ageing. This might help us make lifestyle changes while we’re still young and healthy. Any step we can take to keep a good mental and physical state is a no-brainer!
