The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th of the first month of the lunar calendar. This day is
always the first full moon in the new year. Ancient people also called it Shangyuan Festival.
Celebrations and traditions on this day began from the Han Dynasty and became popular in the Tang
Dynasty.
Watching the red lanterns is one of the main traditions. Lanterns of different shapes and sizes
are usually put on trees, or along river banks on show. It is said that sky lanterns were first used by
Zhuge Kongming to ask for help when he was in trouble. Today, when the lanterns slowly rise into
the air, people make wishes. Another tradition is guessing lantern riddles. The riddles are usually
short, wise, and sometimes humorous. The answer to a riddle can be a Chinese character, a famous
person’s name, or a place name.
The most important thing is to eat sweet dumplings with different tastes. In northern China,
they are called yuanxiao while in southern part they’re named tangyuan. Because making sweet
dumplings is like a game or an activity, they are usually done happily by a group of friends or family
members.
In old times, the Lantern Festival was also a good time for young people to find love. Watching
lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other. And there were many romantic stories
about this festival. A line from Xin Qiji, a poet during the Song Dynasty, shows this, “Hundreds and thousands of times I searched for her in the crowd. Suddenly I turned, and there she stood in the dim
light. ”
In a word, the Lantern Festival has brought us Chinese so much fun and joy over the years. We
hope the young people can carry on these traditions and take pride in Chinese culture.

A. boring B. humorous C. romantic D. important

an average age of 84. The oldest member. Haru Yamashiro.is 97 years old!
The new band, based in the remote island of Kohama in Okinawa,is a huge hit in the

Regardless of the lyrics, these elderly women are incredibly charming when they perform. Their

allowed into the band.It turns out that the pop queens are blessed with incredible genes--Okinawan
islanders have one of the highest life expectancies in the world. Their diet chiefly consists of
vegetables and local purple-fleshed sweet Potatoes, with practically no added sugar. Menaka said she
isn't particular about her diet.
"I look after my health by cleaning my home, wiping the floors, steaming rice, "she said. "I stay in
the shade when it's too hot. I don't want to get burnt. I have to take care of my skin-I'm still young at
heart! "

Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country
are cutting back on music classes to save money. Worse, some schools have never had music classes
to begin with. But without them, students' academic growth and emotional health could suffer. In
fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.
Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education
classes were better in math and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by The College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points.
Students' academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education.
Music programs in public schools also help to add to a student's sense of pride and self -
confidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-
confidence problems, relationship troubles, and choices about drugs and alcohol. All of these can
stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by The Texas Commission on Drug
and Alcohol Abuse found that students who took part in school music programs were less likely to
turn to drugs. Music programs encourage students to work together to produce an excellent
performance.
Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries (界限). Music allows students
from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student
played a piano duet (二重奏) with an American classmate. Although they could not communicate
verbally (口头上), they were able to read the music in order to play the duet. Two students from
different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all
students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.
32.Education with music classes could ________.
A.waste a lot more money from parents B.help students improve their school work
C.lead to a lot of emotional problems easily D.have a bad influence on the quality of education
33.The two studies seem to show that ________.
A.students with great success attended music lessons
B.not all students took part in music lessons
C.music plays an important role in students' success
D.students having music classes are better in all lessons
34.The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that ________.
A.Japan has a good international relationship with America
B.different cultures have different styles of music
C.music makes cross-border communication possible
D.Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Music—a bridge to understanding B.How to get music back
C.The importance of listening to music D.Music education in schools

“It’s not looking too good, darling, I think you’d better pack a few things and go to your
mother’s place. And you’d better take Rosie and Monty with you.”
Putting down the phone, Sara sighed. Tomorrow was her husband Tony’s birthday. She had
planned to cook him a nice meal and then surprise him with the new mountain bike she’d bought for
him. If she went to her mother’s house, Tony wouldn’t get his present for days.
However, her mother’s house was the best place to be right now. Being on higher land, it would
be safe from the floods. It had been raining heavily for almost two weeks and the river near Sara and
Tony’s house was rising higher and higher all the time. Tony and others from the village had spent
the last two days putting sandbags along the side of the river to stop it from overflowing. Now they
feared that their hard work had been useless and soon the whole valley would be flooded.
Sara dressed baby James in warm clothes and collected the things she would need for him over
the next few days. She put the lead on the dog and went in search of Monty, the cat. It took her a
long time, but eventually she found him safe and warm under the covers on her bed. She placed him
in his cat basket and took him into the kitchen where James and the dog, Rosie, were waiting.
Just as she was reaching for the car keys, Sarah heard a sound like the noise bath water makes
when you pull out the plug. She looked at the backdoor, water was flowing in underneath. Turning
around, she saw dirty brown water fountaining (喷射) out of the drain(下水道) and filling the
sink. Realizing that they were trapped by the flood and it became impossible for her to drive out,
quickly she put James into her backpack and pulled onto her back. Calling to Rosie, she picked up
the cat basket and ran to the front of the house and out into the front garden, where the car was
parked.

Music is playing an important part in our life. Most of us are fond of music and listen
to music regularly.I attach great importance to music. To start with, when I feel sad, music can
comfort me,then I can feel more confident about life and my problems. Also, when I have too much
pressure with my schoolwork, music can make me feel relaxed. In addition, when I have some difficulty with sleep, some soft music can help me fall asleep easily. Finally, when I am in a state of
worry, music can calm me down and make me feel optimistic. All in all, music is so important that
life is a journey through a desert if there is no music in our life.
The water was already up to her knees. Rosie was swimming beside her. Knowing the
water would soon be much deeper, Sara ran to the car and opened the doors. She threw the cat basket
onto the roof of the car and pushed Rosie up beside it. Using the car seat as a step she climbed first
onto the front of the car and then onto the roof. James, safely attached to her back, made no sound at
all.Sara stared down at the water which was rushing past the car. It was already half way up the
doors, and still rising.
Sara, together with James, Rosie and Monty, was hungry and frightened on the roof of the house
when a boat appeared in the distance. They were extremely happy and shouted at the boat
“here!here!”,but the boat seemed not to head for their direction. Roise was worried and anxious, then
they four shouted at the boat together “help!help! here we are”. Luckily, the people on the boat
replied to them. They were rescued and the warm—hearted people sent them to Rosie mother’s place.
They showed their sincere gratitude to the people who helped them in need.
如:be attached to,pushed sb up,
They showed their sincere gratitude to the people who helped
them in need. Using the car seat as a step she climbed first onto the front of
the car and then onto the roof.,James, safely attached to her back, made no sound at all 等高级句式。
