She, the youngest of the three kids from Cleveland, was crazy about musicals and Disney movies from an early age and would often watch them singing with her mom, Karen. However, Katie's happy childhood took a turn when her mother was diagnosed (诊断)with cancer. When the doctor informed the family that Karen's disease was terminal, they decided to make a trip to Disney World. ‎ The family spared no expense for their once-in-a-lifetime vacation and stayed at Disney' s hotel for eight nights. They spent their days in the parks, seeing the sights, greeting characters, all the while pushing Karen in her wheelchair and watching her face light up with joy. They all shared in the merriment of experiencing the parks for the first time with Karen. The trip to Disney World at the 8‎ ‎ height of Karen's battle with cancer allowed them to escape into a world of magic and laughter. This was the day Katie decided she wanted to work for Disney. ‎ Sadly, Karen lost the battle and died later, but the whole family remembered her every day and often thought of that Disney vacation. Katie went on to go after her dream. After she received her degree in musical theater, she struggled for years, working as a waitress and trying to be a performer. Her hard work finally paid off when she was hired to work for Disney. ‎ As a Disney performer, Katie is aware that many other families visit the parks and have similar stories to her own. She encourages everyone, especially children, who may be experiencing a hard time. "Every moment is meant for you, even the painful ones, "she says. "It's just like in your favorite Disney movie: There is always some kind of conflict or hardship or pressure. Remember to celebrate those moments, too, because they are taking you to whatever your version of a happy ending is. "‎ ‎21. What made Katie decide to work for Disney?‎ A. The dream that she wanted to live a life full of magic. ‎ B. The memory that she watched Disney movies as a kid. ‎ C. The great courage her mother showed in fighting cancer. ‎ D. The great joy the Disney vacation brought to her family.‎ ‎22. Which of the following words best describe Katie?‎ A. Kind and curious. ‎ B. Patient and helpful. ‎ C. Strong-willed and determined. ‎ D. Strict and independent.‎ ‎23. What message does Katie convey in the last paragraph?‎ A. Experience must be bought.‎ B. Sweet is pleasure after pain. ‎ C. Many drops make a shower. ‎ D. Good medicine tastes bitter. ‎ B Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, “The British are the only people who like to be told how bad things are.” This is definitely true of British comedy. Most people think humor is about happy things, but for the British, the opposite is true. We love to use our cruel sense of humor to complain and be negative.‎ British comedy, for example, draws a fine line between comedy and tragedy. BBC's The Office is a TV show, famous for its dry humor. The main character, David Brent, is a foolish man, and the show's comedy comes from his delusions. For example, he often tells himself that he is loved by everyone but the viewer can see that everyone hates him.‎ Stupid characters for the audience to laugh at are an old tradition in Britain. In Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night, the character Malvolio is an old man whom people play tricks on. The audience will laugh away, although the reality is that this man is a truly tragic individual.‎ This side of British humor is reflected in friendships as well. At university, my friends and I would always laugh at one another. I had an American friend who actually found this sarcasm(挖苦 8‎ ‎)quite upsetting. She didn't realize that in Britain, the better friends you are with someone, the more you laugh at them.‎ This approach—laughing at everything—may sound rather depressing, but our strange humor played a big part in British history. In World War II, along with a stiff upper lip(坚定沉着),the British got through it by laughing. What else was there to do?‎ There is a saying in English: “Laugh and the world laughs with you;cry and you cry alone.” If you are ever on the receiving end of British sarcasm, you may feel like crying, but it's best to just laugh it off!‎ ‎24. How is British comedy different from other types?‎ A. It is often surprising and boring.‎ B. It often laughs at human nature.‎ C. It often makes people feel depressed.‎ D. It is often about negative things.‎ ‎25. Why is Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night mentioned in the article?‎ A. To show one of the best examples of British comedy.‎ B. To prove Britain has a long tradition of laughing at stupid characters.‎ C. To show how difficult it is to make people accept British comedy.‎ D. To explain how Shakespeare's comedy is different.‎ ‎26. How does the author advise people to react to British humor?‎ A. Reply sarcastically.‎ B. Don't take it seriously.‎ C. Learn from it.‎ D. Be careful not to make stupid mistakes.‎ C You’re walking around and a thought occurs: “I should check my phone.” The phone comes out of your pocket. You type a message. Then your eyes remain glued to the screen, even when you walk across the street.‎ We all do this kind of distracted walking, or “twalking.” The behavior has caused debates among lawmakers about whether walking and texting should be illegal. Some cities have gone beyond talk and banned distracted walking altogether. But we shouldn’t let that comfort us. Last year, pedestrian(行人) deaths in the United States were at their highest point since 1990, with distracted drivers and bigger vehicles the chief cause. So being focused on a screen while walking can’t be safe.‎ l Why We Text and Walk People are, by nature, information-seeking creatures. When we regularly check our phones, we are snacking on information from devices that offer an all-you-can-eat buffet(自助餐)of information. Our information-seeking tendencies evolved from the behavior of animals seeking for food for survival. Studies have shown that our brains feel rewarded when we receive information, which drives us to seek more. That’s similar to how our appetites(胃口)feel satisfied after we eat.‎ At what point is this considered addiction? Not all constant phone use was considered addictive. External pressure, like a demanding job, could force people to frequently check their phones. But when 8‎ ‎ people check their devices just to enhance their mood, this could be a sign of a developing problem. Another signal of addictive behavior is becoming preoccupied with smartphone use when you should be doing something else. An even clearer indicator is what happens when the phone is taken away. There needed to be a broad public awareness campaign over the dangers of walking and texting in parallel with distracted driving.‎ l How to Take Control Obviously, the answer to not getting into dangerous situations by walking and texting is not to walk and text at the same time. But that’s easier said than done, since people have trouble controlling their tech use. So several experts recommended exercises in self-control. People could practice being more mindful by asking themselves any of these questions like “Is this the most important thing for me to be doing right now?”‎ Reducing access to the device can also be helpful. You could carry your phone in your bag instead of your pocket, making it more troublesome to pull out, for example. When you have to check their phones, you should stop walking and stand in a safe place. You also could switch off notifications for all apps except those that are most important to you, like work-related apps.‎ 27. What does the underlined word in Para 2 mean?‎ A. talking while walking ‎ B. texting while walking C. telephoning while walking D. tweeting while walking 28. Which of the following statements is NOT true about distracted walking?‎ A. Distracted walking is determined by nature and therefore people can do little about it.‎ B. A few cities in the Us have officially prohibited people from engaging in distracted walking.‎ C. A broad public awareness campaign over the dangers of distracted walking has not yet been launched.‎ D. Exercises in self-control can help people to reduce distracted walking.‎ 30. Instead, people should stay at home and keep track of their symptoms, because according to the National Health Commission of China, many respiratory(呼吸的)illnesses may show symptoms like fever and coughing. Still, 33 so the rest of their family won't get infected.‎ If the symptoms continue, with shortness of breath and a fever higher than 37.3 C, it might be time for a hospital visit. 34 One can do primary tests there.‎ While in the hospital, it's advisable that one should share all the information about his travel history with the doctors, and try to remember the people he has interacted(接触)with. 35 ‎ A.
