In her 17 years on this earth, Shreyaa Venkat has done more to help the planet and the people
living on it than many adults. The non-profit organization she founded, NEST4US, has helped tens of
thousands of people in the United States.
Venkat’s passion for helping others started as soon as she could walk, as her parents, active
volunteers themselves, brought her along on their various projects. By fifth grade, she’d developed
such enthusiasm for it that she started organizing her own service projects in her community. When
she realized how much food waste there is, how many hungry people there are, and how simple it
would be to use the former to help the latter, NEST4US was born.
Then, how would she accomplish this huge task? Many kids of her age have a hard time just 英语试卷 第 5 页(共 12 页) 英语试卷 第 6 页(共 12 页)

talking on the phone but talking to strangers is not a problem for Venkat, who says she emails, calls,
and talks to business owners in person to ask for donations. From there, volunteers pick up the excess
food and deliver it to local shelters. “Thankfully there are so many people who want to help, all you
have to do is ask them,” she says.
Attached to every bag of food or donations is a hand-written note with a message of love,
optimism, and sometimes colorful drawings. Venkat knew these people needed more than just food,
and they needed care. So she gathered volunteers aged 4 to 70 to write the messages which are then
attached to the donations.
Recently a homeless man at a shelter approached her to say that he had kept every single one of
the notes he’d gotten, saying, “They really help lift me up, to know people care about me.” The notes
may be a small “extra” but they provide that human touch. “To everyone who says they don’t know
how to help, I tell them to write notes of encouragement — anyone, anywhere can do this and it
really does mean a lot,” she says.

Scientists have discovered that rats have adapted to modern human life, even adapting their diets
to the cities they live in.
The scientists claim that it could be possible that humans and rats have had similar changes in
their genetic make-up, due to modern city life. The downside of the changes in the DNA is that they
could make rats susceptible to the same health problems as humans, such as pollutants and sugary
foods.
The study showed that rats’ diets have also adapted to their environment. In New York, you can
see them eat bagels and beer; in Paris, they like croissants and butter. They adapt in amazing ways.
The scientists also analyzed the genomes of 29 New York rats and compared them with those of nine
brown rats from Heilongjiang Province, north-east China. The finding showed that dozens of rat
genes had been through major DNA changes over the centuries, as the rats spread from Asia to
Europe and America, and from the countryside and into cities.
The changed genes were associated with diet, behavior, and movement, which added pressures
and challenges for the rat to overcome. This could reflect the fact that urban rats have to move
through highly artificial environments that are very different from natural habitats. So these gene
changes might have evolved to help them move more easily through underground channels and pipes.
As the rats are closely associated with city-living humans, the scientists believe that it is
possible that similar changes have happened in both species.
In October 2019, scientists used rats to successfully test an enzyme(酶) that could be used to
help people quit smoking. Two groups of rats were trained to self-administer nicotine, and over two
weeks their nicotine intakes increased, suggesting addiction. Then, one group of rats was given the
enzyme, which led to a decreased nicotine intake. The scientists say that the enzyme could be
developed for human use in the future.
28. Which of the following best explains the underlined phrase “susceptible to” in paragraph 2?
A. Not likely to be cured. B. Being disease-resistant.
C. Very likely to be affected. D. Being thoroughly exposed.
29. What does the author intend to show in the third paragraph?
A. Rats in the city are particular about their food.
B. Rats in different cities have different genetic make-up.
C. Rats are distributed in every continent of the earth.
D. Rats have been adapting to the environment since ancient times.
30. What is the purpose of testing an enzyme on rats?
A. To explore rats’ survival ability. B. To help people stop smoking. 英语试卷 第 7 页(共 12 页) 英语试卷 第 8 页(共 12 页)

A new study found that some methods for measuring a species’ generation time might
underestimate(低估) the likelihood that some species will die out.
A species’ generation time is how long it takes for a generation to be replaced by its mature
offspring ( 后 代 ) . This is different for every species and dramatically impacts how quickly a
species can respond to changes in their environment. The generation time of a mouse is only a few
months, whereas the African elephant has a generation time of 22 years. The longer the generation
time, the slower a species can adapt to environmental changes and may, therefore, be more likely to
die out.
In some risk assessment models, population reduction is measured on the scale(范围) of
three times a species’ generation time. If a species is believed to mature and produce offspring in five
years, then how much its population has declined will be measured over a 15-year interval. But if a
species’ generation time is underestimated, so is the threat status of the species.
We tested the influence of errors in different measures of generation time, including those used
by the IUCN Red List assessments and found that these errors could potentially lead to an overly
optimistic assessment of extinction risk for some species.
To overcome this, we compared different types of errors in seven commonly used measures of
generation time. We propose a new estimate which predicts a species’ generation time from its body
mass and reproductive lifespan.
Still, the lack of data is a thorny problem for making accurate calculations. We’re planning to
explore how to fill some of these knowledge gaps by comparing survival and reproduction data from
wild and captive populations, using data from nearly 1,200 zoos and aquariums over 40 years, on
more than 21,000 species.
32. What can we know from the second paragraph?
A. Elephants are less endangered than mice.
B. Mice have longer generation time than elephants.
C. Mice are more adaptable than elephants.
D. Elephants are more advanced than mice.
33. How should African elephants’ population reduction be measured?
A. On a range of 15 years. B. On a range of 22 years.
C. On a range of 44 years. D. On a range of 66 years.
34. What is the result of underestimating the generation time of some species?
A. Overestimating their survival. B. Causing them to die out quickly.
C. Ignoring their danger to humans. D. Accelerating their reproduction.
35. What will the researchers do next?
A. Doing experiments. B. Analyzing more data.
C. Counting animals in zoos. D. Popularizing animal knowledge.

As we all know, exercise provides a wealth of benefits. It makes you stronger, more flexible,
and more energetic. 36 According to recent studies, the answer is YES. By using your
mind in fun, new ways, you can improve your memory well into old age and dramatically reduce
your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Recent studies have found that the best thing you can do for your brain is to keep learning new
things. 37 There’s the physical activity that keeps your body in good working order —
activities like walking, biking, and gardening. Passive activities include watching TV, watching
movies, and listening to music. It’s the activities in the third group, however, that really boost your
brain’s juices. These intellectual activities include reading, writing, creating artwork, and
puzzle-solving.
38 Studies have shown that people who are less mentally active in their younger
years, between ages twenty and sixty, are four times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s. In other
words, you’re never too young to give your mind a workout. 英语试卷 第 9 页(共 12 页) 英语试卷 第 10 页(共 12 页)

Example:
M: Excuse me, can you tell me how much the shirt is?
W: Yes, it’s nine fifteen.
Text 1
M: Hi, Susie, it’s been too long since I saw you last! How’s life been?
W: Couldn’t be better. College life is going great.
Text 2
M: What time is the party?
W: Uh, it starts at 7:00. So, can I pick you up at 6:40?
M: That would be a little tight. Let’s set out half an hour earlier.
Text 3
M: I’ll set two alarms. When the first one rings, I’ll get up and get ready. When the second one rings,
I’ll walk out of the door.
W: That’s a good idea. Then you’ll get to work on time.
Text 4
M: You can’t keep your eyes open. You had better go home and take a rest.
W: I guess you’re right. I’ll see you tomorrow.
Text 5
M: Don’t you think the new student is a little strange? He doesn’t even say a word unless he is asked
a question.
W: It’s probably because he doesn’t have any friends yet.
Text 6
M: Hey, Linda. Look at these shoes!
W: High heels! I love them! Where did you find them?
M: I was looking at the sale part. Are they your size?
W: Let me look. No, they’re size 9. I wear size 7.
M: Too bad.
W: Hey, Alex. Let’s both look at the sale part. Maybe we can find some shoes for you there.
M: Good idea!
Text 7
W: James, do you like your smart speaker?
M: Yes! It’s great. Do you want to buy one?
W: I’m thinking about it! But I don’t know much about them.
M: They’re so convenient. I talk to my smart speaker, and it looks up things.
W: When I want to find information, I use my smart phone.
M: Finding information is easier with a smart speaker.
W: OK, what else can you do with one?
M: You can check the weather, shop for things and schedule things on your calendar. You can do it
all with just your voice!
W: Wow, it can do almost everything!
M: It can also control a smart home.
W: Hmm, my home isn’t very smart! I won’t use it for that.
Text 8
M: Come in. Please sit down.
W: Thanks, Mr. Harold. I’m Georgia.
M: OK, what can I do for you, Georgia?
W: Well, I’ve worked here as a typist for about a year, and I’d like to have a chance of advancement.
M: What job are you applying for?
W: I’d like to be a secretary in the personnel department.
M: Is your English good enough?
W: I think so. I’m studying English at a language school. 英语试卷 第 23 页(共 12 页) 英语试卷 第 24 页(共 12 页)

M: What about your typing speed?
W: I can type 50 words per minute.
M: OK, Georgia, you have the ability and I know you can do the job. The trial period is one month.
W: Yes, I know. I have 30 days to learn the job, right?
M: That’s right. You can start on the 1st of July, OK?
W: No problem. I’ll try my best to be up to the new job.
M: Well, good luck.
Text 9
M: Good morning, doctor.
W: Good morning.
M: My daughter Mary hasn’t been feeling well and she has a fever. Can you please have a look?
W: OK. Please take off her jacket. I will just listen to her back and check her throat.
M: How is she?
W: Her throat looks red. I think she has an infection. I will prescribe her some medicine.
M: How long does she need to take them?
W: About a week but she can continue for another week if she doesn’t feel better. She should
probably rest for a few days too and not go to school.
M: She has become very weak recently. She gets cold very easily too. Can she take a shower?
W: Absolutely, taking a cool shower actually helps reduce the fever in a natural way.
M: Wow, I didn’t know that. When should we come back again?
W: I want to see her next week, but if she gets worse, you can come and see me regardless.
M: Thank you so much, doctor.
W: You are welcome. It’s my pleasure. I hope she gets well soon.

Is it possible to drive a car without using one’s hands or feet? An experiment carried out at
Berlin’s Free University has shown that this may indeed be possible. The theory behind the
thought-controlled car is not new. Researchers have been working on ways to link the human brain
directly to a computer for years. In the future, the knowledge gained may be useful in aiding those
who can’t walk and those who can’t control their arms but have minds that are fully functioning.
The technology behind the idea is complicated. It is easy to detect brain waves with sensors on
the skin, but it is very difficult to check out exact orders from the noise going on inside the human
mind. At the moment, thought-controlled vehicles are only for research purposes, and scientists are
not promising any major breakthroughs for the physically challenged.
