M: An injured snow leopard was found in Zadoi county in January and sent to Xining Wildlife Park. Since he was
rescued on the “Big Chill” day, one of China’s 24 solar terms, he was named Linghan, meaning “braving the cold”.
Linghan was almost blind when being rescued. Surgery was suggested to recover his eyesight, but his condition
had to improve before the operation. Linghan weighed only about 25kg when he first arrived, but in November,
he had put on 15 kilograms, and his overall physical condition was assessed as being normal. The surgery was done
in Xining on November 26th and it went very well. Linghan will hopefully regain his eyesight after the surgery.
There are 12 snow leopards in Xining Wildlife Park, including 3-year-old Aoxue who was artificially ( 人 工 地 )
propagated (繁殖) . The other leopards are kept there because they are old, weak, sick or disabled. Linghan is over
11 years old now, and he has lost the ability to survive in the wild because his remaining teeth are badly worn.
After a full recovery, Linghan will be given a new home where he will be cared for.
